"HANK" SAYS Here's a question by Secretary of the Army Kenneth C. Royall— "Everywhere our men and officers are performing their duties well. They have the fine sense of humor and the easy swing of American youth. They are standing firm without provoking fights, but when someone seeks to impose upon them, as has been the case, they can be and they are, as hard as nails and as firm as granite." Edgar V. Cipollini, 17, 807 North Pine, Anaheim, enlisted this week for three years service in the U.S. Air Force. A former student at Anaheim high school where he earned letters as an end on the '45-'46 football squad Edgar follows in the footsteps of his brother Albert who is a Major in the Army Engineers stationed in Germany. Applications for the March 1949 Aviation Cadet class have far exceeded expectations. Better get yours in soon, if you can qualify for the pilot training. High school graduates may apply for Officers' candidate school. William N. Daniel, 19, son of Mr. and Mrs. Henry C. Daniel, 210 West Commonwealth street, Buena Park, has enlisted in the U.S. Air Force. Daniel is a former student at Anaheim high school and was president of the 1948 senior class. He was an outstanding athlete, earning letters in track and football. He has been assigned to Sheppard Air Force Base, Wichita Falls, Texas, for basic training. Another Anaheim youth who enlisted in the U.S. Air Force is Robert N. Williams, 18, son of Mrs. Nell F. Williams, 127 West Cypress street, Anaheim. Bonelli, chairman of the State Board of Equalization. The October distributions were 5.6 per cent below the September level, as compared with a normal seasonal decrease of less than two-tenths of one per cent. Taxes assessed on October distributions totalled $11,634,640.62, but refunds made during the month by Controller Thomas H. Kuchel on gasoline not used on the highways amounted to $1,956,594.58. Net revenues to the state therefore amounted to $9,678,046.04, Banelli declared. October distributions were at the lowest level since February, 1948, Bonelli observed. In part this may have been the result of abnormally heavy stocking by retailers during September in the face of threatened shortages occasioned by the oil company strike. While the strike was still in progress during October, production was not so drastically curtailed as at the outset of the dispute, and the possible necessity of rationing customers had passed in most areas. Diesel fuel usage during October, subject to the use fuel tax instead of the gasoline tax, amounted to 7,114,872 gallons and gained very slightly over the pre- The youngsters at Whittier Elementary School in Harvey, Ill., were given a rare treat when Lou Boudreau, player-manager of the world champion Cleveland Indians, came back and occupied the same seat he had while in the first grade. Veterans between 19 and 32 can apply for a direct commission they have at least two years of college training. The Aviation Cadet program is open to married men as well as single men; former Air Force members are eligible to apply for assignment to "Operation Desert Storm" in Europe. With a choice like that—why not to be greeted! I'll be glad touss with you the opportunities offered by the peace-time Army Air Force. Drop in any time. We have just received a supply of American Campaign Medals for those to Army veterans of World War II. Drop in at the office with your original discharge and get yours. Also available are the American Defense Medal, the Atlantic Pacific Medal and the European Medal. "Well, how are chances of getting a commission?" There's a question that's thrown at me at least once a day. Let me answer it this time in black and white. Your chances of a commission are very good!! Especially right at this moment. There's a deal on right now that many of you would be interested in. If you have two years, one half of the normal course, for a baccalaureate degree, at a nationally accorded college or university and are not due to attend, or are not presently attending, a college or university at this time—you are eligible! If you've had at least one year's active service in one of the United States Armed Forces, during the period December 7, 1941, to June 30, 1947...you are eligible! If you are nineteen years old or have not passed your thirty-second birthday at the time of application—you are eligible! Eligibility for what? Why man! Eligible for a commission as a Second Lieutenant in the new regular army, of course! There is a need, at this time, for 35,000 additional officers within the next eight months. This is the opportunity many of our veterans have been waiting for. It's also a good deal for the high school graduate with two years accredited college credits. Yessir, here's your chance. Why not come down and see me the first opportunity you have. As you know, you can find me at 128 So. Los Angeles St., Anaheim, or phone 3686. Here's another method by which men are taking advantage of a great opportunity being offered them. Today, as never before, enlisted men are getting the chance to become career officers through attendance at their country's top military institution, the United States Military Academy at West Point. Then there's officers Candidate While the strike was still in progress during October, production was not so drastically curtailed as at the outset of the dispute, and the possible necessity of rationing customers had passed in most areas. Diesel fuel usage during October, subject to the use fuel tax instead of the gasoline tax, amounted to 7,114,872 gallons and gained very slightly over the previous month. In addition, deficiency assessments were made on 522,941 gallons of fuel used prior to October. The total gallonage assessed was 14.79 per cent larger than that of October, 1947. The combined tax, penalty, and interest assessed amounted to $347,-915.55, as compared to $301,217.54 a year ago and $352,700.30 a month ago, Bonelli stated. Teeth Still Have To be Drilled... Tooth decay preventatives are not a dental cure-all, according to the State Department of Health. The department issued a statement declaring sodium-fluoride treatments can only partially control the formation of new tooth cavities. Dr. W. L. Halverson, director of the department, stated that fluoride does not help existing cavities, does not prevent all future tooth decay, and in no way substitutes daily oral hygiene. Halverson said that many parents who have taken their children to dentists for such treatments have concluded mistakenly that the dentist or the preventative was at fault. Treatments for children between the ages of 3 and 16, according to Halverson, should be undertaken. Application of the preventative is painless and four applications, which constitute a treatment, are worthwhile. Halverson said that a test group of children had undergone fluoride treatment and have averaged 40 per cent fewer cavities. Boulder Dam in Colorado stores 9,938 billion gallons of water. Mrs. Helene Clodt Passes on Friday Helene Clodt, a resident of Anaheim since 1193, passed away at her home at 1320 Burton Road East Friday, December 17, at the age of 77 years. Born in Oldenburg, Germany, she came to the United States in 1892. The deceased was a member of Zion Lutheran church and she had been the secretary of the ladies aid of that church for thirty-five years. Surviving are four sons, Harry Clodt, Fred Clodt, and Arthur Clodt, all or Yorba Linda, and Otto Clodt of Anaheim; ten grandchildren; three brothers, Henry Siefken of Dillon, Montana; Gerard Siefken and Fred Siefken, both of Anaheim. Funeral services were held Monday at 3:30 p.m. at Backs, Campbell and Kaulbars chapel with the Rev. L. E. Eifert, pastor of Zion Lutheran church of this city, officiating. Interment was in Loma Vista Memorial Park. The carriers seek to supplant this maximum allowable increase with a straight 25 percent rate increase. Toalson and other representatives of citrus canning firms attended a meeting in San Francisco December 9 to protest institution of proposed new rates which, unless objection had been filed, would have become effective December 9. The proposed new rate would be $1.55 per 100 pounds to New York City, compared with the present rate of $1.40. The higher rates tend to lower still further the profits citrus growers can make on their production. Those attending the meeting besides Wright Toalson of M.O.D., were Thomas C. Borden, Exchange Lemon Products Co.; B. A. Hogan, Exchange Orange Products Co.; R. L. Templeton, Tree-Sweet, Inc.; and W. J. Ryan, Mutual Citrus Products, Inc. As a result of the hearing inauguration of higher rates has been postponed. Farm land prices throughout the nation continue to soar—already in 10 states prices are higher than in the booming 20s'.
