To Sing Leads In 'The Messiah' Handel's beautiful "Messiah" will be presented Sunday afternoon at 4 o'clock in the Anaheim high school auditorium by the choirs of the First Presbyterian church of this city, under direction of Arnold O. Lewerenz, voice teacher and minister of music at that church. Several well known vocalists of this area will interpret solo roles in the symbolic oratorio who have studied with Mr. and Mrs. Lewerenz, the Rev. Howard S. Congdon, church pastor, stated. Mr. and Mrs. Lewerenz were in charge of musical direction in large New York and Philadelphia churches and with the Philadelphia and New York Philharmonic orchestras where they had much experience in the field of oratorio and cantata, before moving here. Soloists to appear on the program next Sunday include Loretta Franzen, Bernice Tompkins Nelson, Jeanne Gulson Stull, Chad Bolick, Gene Peebles, William Talevich and Phyllis Hinman. A coloratura soprano, Miss Franzen won the Musical Arts club vocal contest in her division last year. She will sing the beauti- Unto Him" and the recitative "Then Shall the Eyes of the Blind Be Opened." Phyllis Hinman, contralto soloist, and high school art and photography instructor, will sing the recitative "Behold, a Virgin Shall Conceive" and the aria "O Thou That Tellest Good Tidings." Chad Boliek, known for his lead work in high school plays, "George Washington Slept Here" and "You Can't Take It With You" and also as student body president in 1945, will be tenor soloist for the "Messiah" program, singing the arioso, "Comfort Ye" and the aria "Every Valley." Following an enlistment in the Army. Boliek is in his second year at Fullerton Junior college where he is majoring in drama and radio. Known for his interpretation of the lead roles in the FJC plays "Say It With Music and "Rio Rico" is Gene Peebles who will sing bass roles including the aria "The People That Walked in Darkness." Baritone William Talevich will present the recitative "Thus Saith the Lord," the aria "But Who May Abide" and the arioso "For Behold, Darkness Shall Cover the Earth." Talevich was active in quartet and duet work while in the service and also in Anaheim and Santa Ana. No admission will be charged for the impressive program, Lewerenz stated.
