To Give 'Messiah' At High School Rehearsals are well underway for a presentation of Handel's beautiful "Messiah," December 19, Sunday afternoon at 4 o'clock at the Anaheim high school auditorium, by the Chapel and Chancel choirs of the First Presbyterian church of this city, under direction of Arnold O. Lewerenz, voice teacher and minister of music at that church, the Rev. Howard S. Congdon, pastor, has announced. Last Sunday afternoon the local choirs participated in a "Messiah" performance in Huntington Park at the Church of the Latter Day Saints. They formed part of a huge massed choir of 250 voices heard under the auspices of the music department of the Church Federation of Los Angeles. The work was conducted by Dr. Ralph Lyman, retired head of Pomona College music department. Simultaneous performances of the "Messiah" were given in 16 areas in the greater Los Angeles territory, as part of the same program. Lewerenz was selected from several hundred vocalists to sing the "Messiah" tenor solos in the Church of God, East Los Angeles area, as part of that same program. 'Rain' Friday Measures .12 Of an Inch The heaviest precipitation this season occurred here Friday night but even that amounted only to .12 of an inch, according to the Anaheim department of Light and Power which keeps its rain gauge at the plant on South Los Angeles street. A shower in October measured here .05 of an inch making the rain total for the season.17 of an inch. And here it is the ninth of December. Authority Talks On Communism Christianity today faces an enemy more vicious, more brutal and more powerful than any opposition it has ever had—Communism, according to the Rev. Archie Crouch of Fullerton, author and missionary to China under the foreign missionary board of the Presbyterian church, U.S.A., stated when discussing "Communism's Challenge to Christianity" before an audience of more than 300 at the First Presbyterian church in this city last Sunday morning. The speaker was introduced by the Rev. Howard S. Congdon, church pastor. The Rev. Crouch recently received a telegram from the national church board stating that inasmuch as Communistic forces threatened to take over Nanking, China, he and other American missionaries were ordered to return to this country. After spending several years in the Orient as a missionary, Crouch served our government in a semi-official capacity helping to evacuate our fallen airmen from the wastes of Tibet during the recent war. "The Communists and the Christians are diametrically opposed in their concept of the individual. The Communist believes that the individual is never more than a means to the end, whereas the Christian believes the individual is the end. The Communist sees an enemy as only an object to be liquidated or neutralized, the Christian believes that an enemy is one to be converted through love and respect. "The Communists believe and teach that there is no God, that we live in a mechanistic universe and that human beings are mere creatures of circumstance. The Communist party is the supreme moral authority from which there is no further appeal. The Christian believes in God so the route, designed forience of customers."
