Spoor, chairman of the State PMA committee. A report recently released, Mr. Spoor stated that this amount of grain had a value of $8,273,000.00 and involved 920 individual loans. Eighty-six per cent of the grain was barley, 13% wheat and 1% rye. One loan on 1948 flax has been consummated. Price support activity is anticipated in the next few months on dry beans, rice, and grain sorghums. CONSERVING WATER TO CONSERVE SOIL Practically every soil conservation problem has something to do with water, says Roy L. Hale, chairman of the Orange county Agricultural Conservation Committee, discussing the importance of water conservation in programs to conserve soil. In many parts of the county it primarily a matter of retaining the water in the soil instead of letting it run off, taking the soil with it. This is done with vegetation cover in the form of pastures or cover crops, farming on the contour, terraces or dams. In places where there is more water than can be soaked up in the soil, it is a matter of getting the excess water off the land without having the land go with it. This requires such measures as well waterways, check dams, riparian areas. Queen's Jester, Jack Benny, internationally famed as the Waukegan Wit, has been selected by the Pasadena Junior Chamber of Commerce to present the Tournament of Roses Queen and her Court of Princesses in their first public appearance at the Queen's Breakfast at the Huntington Hotel Friday, December 17th. Here Mr. Benny is presented with the "Jester's Wand" by Judy Mitchell, daughter of the Breakfast Chairman, Dick Mitchell, in keeping with the Tournament of Roses theme of "Childhood Memories." creasing the ability of the land to produce. The problem here often is one of liming the irrigation canal to prevent seeping away of the irrigation stream to insure that more of the water reaches the land to be irrigated. The application of lime and phosphate to increase the growth of legumes and grass contribute through this increased growth to greater water conservation. More water is soaked into the land and the excess water can flow without erosion where the land is heavily sodded. Mr. Hale said that water conservation had been included in the Agricultural Conservation Program because it is often difficult if not impossible to separate soil conservation from water conservation. Even wind erosion results from not enough moisture in the soil to hold the soil particles. PURCHASES OF BEANS, AND RICE DURING THE PERIOD ENDED OCTOBER 29 The Production and Marketing Administration of the U. S. Department of Agriculture has announced that the Commodity Credit Corporation bought 66,100 hundred pound bags of milled rice, 24,000 hundred pound bags of dry edible pea beans, and 1,600 hundred pound bags of dry edible marrowfat peas during the two-week period ended October 29. These commodities are for use on export programs. SALABLE AND SURPLUS PERCENTAGES FOR WALNUTS FIXED The U. S. Department of Agriculture has announced the fixing of the salable percentage for merchantable walnuts at 90 per cent and the surplus percentage at 10 per cent for the marketing year beginning August 1, 1948. The action follows provisions of the marketing agreement and order program regulating the handling of walnuts grown in California, Oregon and Washington. Following a formula in the agreement and order, the withholding percentages — based on the ratio between the surplus and salable percentage — will be a flat 11 per cent. This percentage governs the quantity of merchantable walnuts to be withheld by handlers for shelling or export in relation to the quantity sold in shell on the domestic markets. Proposed saiable, surplus and ranking high among the reasons thousands of young men give for selecting or continuing their careers in the Army are the chances of rapid advancement in their chosen fields. Today the Army is expanding fast. This expansion means unlimited opportunity for promotion of skilled, highly trained men.
