Ben Liebermann Warns Former POWs of Racket
Former prisoners of war are advised by Ben Liebermann, Orange county service officer, to think twice before they sign a contract with any "committee" or "agency" offering, for a fee, to represent them in applying for special compensation to which they are entitled by federal law.
An organization with headquarters in the east is known to have representatives in some parts of California who offer to assist veterans in collecting what is due them under the War Claims Act of 1948, charging 10 per cent of the amount collected as a fee.
In one county seat, four veterans who were formerly POWs signed such contracts, only to learn shortly afterward that local facilities exist for assisting them without charge, to collect the food allowance that the War Claims Act entitles them to for the time they spent as enemy prisoners. This allowance has been fixed at $1 a day.
To date, no federal government machinery has been set up even to prepare application forms for this benefit. In the meantime, ex-POWs are invited to inquire at the Orange county Service office, located at 225 North Broadway, Santa Ana, for information about their rights under the War Claims Act.

THE PRICE OF
GAS STAYED
DOWN!
GAS COSTS YOU LESS TODAY THAN IN 1939
There’s as much difference between most prewar and present prices as between a kernel of corn before and after popping. The prices of almost everything you buy have doubled or tripled. One exception is gas! It didn’t go up in price. Gas actually costs you less today than in 1939.
The popcorn comparison aptly applies to our expenses too. They’re the largest in our history. Extensions to serve new customers, for example, cost us 2½ to 3 times more than before the war. But we have kept down the price of gas to you by 1) serving more gas to more people...60% more customers than ten years ago...and 2) striving constantly to find new ways to achieve greater efficiency and more economical operation.
Perhaps you have never stopped to consider just how low the cost of gas is. This economy...and superior performance in modern automatic appliances...is why gas is used so widely in Southern California for cooking, water heating, house heating and refrigeration.

How’s our railroad doing,
young man?
"Is it making any money?"
"What are they paying for fuel these days?"
"Are you hauling much freight?"
"Do you like your job?"
"Is it making any money?"
"What are they paying for fuel these days?"
"Are you hauling much freight?"
"Do you like your job?"
The little old lady is not a busybody—she is merely looking after one of her investments.
She has some money in the Santa Fe. Maybe it's ten, maybe it's twenty, maybe it's fifty shares of Santa Fe stock.
She is entitled to attend a stockholders' meeting. She can get on her feet and ask our board of directors questions just like the above. She can compliment those gentlemen for their management, or she can bang her umbrella on the table and tell them off.
Alone, her few shares of stock can't do a lot. Alone, she couldn't elect a president of the United States. But stockholders just like her — housewives, teachers, merchants, salesmen, laborers—can tell us how to run the Santa Fe, and they do. (Actually 29,178 Santa Fe stockholders are women, most of them holding only a small number of shares each.)
And that's the beauty of America—the voice of the people is the voice that runs things, whether it's operating a transcontinental railroad or putting a man in the White House.
Isn't it a wonderful country where so many can own so much? That's "Free Enterprise."
Santa Fe stockholders, just as those of any railroad, know that American railroads must be permitted to earn at least 6% (many other industries earn more) on their investment in order to maintain sound and progressive operations and to continue to provide shippers and passengers with the finest in rail transportation.
