County Avocado Growers Take All-Day Trip
Sixty-two Orange county avocado growers took an all-day tour last weekend which began in Yorba Linda and ended at the Citrus Experiment Station near Riverside.
At Yorba Linda they visited the Kenneth Casper grove of big Fuerte trees where Dick Puffer, avocado and citrus specialist on the Farm Advisor's staff, gave a demonstration of the need of keeping production records on individual trees to enable the grower to know when and how much to prune trees which have begun to crowd one another. Then they went to the nearby Ed Barnhart place where Dr. George Zentmeyer of the Experiment station has an experimental plot where he is studying avocado root rot. He is trying feeding some of the declining trees with alfalfa meal, without visible results so far.
At Corona the excursionists learned that many acres which for 30 or more years have been devoted to lemons are to be cleared off for new plantings of avocados. Most of the new plantings, they learned with interest, are to be tip-grafted trees, a fairly new method of producing nursery trees which is believed to speed up early production. About 200 acres of land about Corona has already been planted to avocados and owners of about 1500 more acres are planning to change over from lemons to avocados.
At the Experiment Station the growers saw 16 strains of Fuertes
