Polio Cases In State Now Exceed 3,500 Polio cases now total more than 3,500 in California and every aid of the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis has been thrown into the fight, Mrs. Lois Cook Brown, campaign director of the Orange county chapter declared. She had returned with first hand reports from an emergency meeting of March of Dimes campaign directors representing California, Arizona, New Mexico and Nevada. She said that the polio outbreak in southern California has assumed greater proportions than those in Texas and North Carolina. Cases in Orange county now exceed 90. Every effort is being made to provide the best of medical care for every patient and there is complete cooperation from everyone concerned. Polio cases for 1948 are already over the 20,000 mark and there is fear that the year's total may exceed 28,000 or even reach 30,000. The worst epidemic year in history was 1916 when 27,363 cases were charted. Instead of tapering off substantially with the advent of colder weather, polio is still raging in many other states, and urgent calls for outside aid from the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis are continuing every day. At the same time, due to the terrific outbreaks which have swept large areas, emergency epidemic aid funds of the Foundation are now at the vanishing point. The fund may face a $2,000,000 deficit by January, the chairmen were told. This money borrowed from research funds will have to List Winners of Horse Contest Winners of the horse judging contest conducted in the City park following the Hallowe'en parade Saturday night are as follows: Men's Single Silver Mount—1. More than 250 couples attended the Elks fete at the North Los Angeles street lodge General Chairman Andy Anders said. Out-of-town guests came from throughout southland cities including Los Angeles, Alhambra and Santa Monica, Warren Ashleigh lodge manager stated. Against a vivid background orange and black decorations, participants enjoyed rhythmic dance. At the same time, due to the terrific outbreaks which have swept large areas, emergency epidemic aid funds of the Foundation are now at the vanishing point. The fund may face a $2,000,000 deficit by January, the chairmen were told. This money borrowed from research funds will have to be replaced. For this reason plans to hold the greatest March of Dimes drive in all the years of the polio fight were discussed at the Los Angeles meeting. Recruiting of more volunteer workers will begin at once, Mrs. Brown said. James O.
