State to Spend $60,000 on Yorba Crossing
Using highly technical language the state highway division has made public what it proposes to do to make the Yorba highway crossing of the Santa Fe railway. "most dangerous grade crossing in California," safer.
The official announcement from the Sacramento headquarters of the division says: "It is proposed to correct the condition by revision the intersection of the two highway routes and shifting the location of the railroad crossing."
The "two highway routes" mentioned by the highway division is presumed to mean the Placentia-Yorba highway, which is a part of the state highway system, and Esperanza road, county oil-surfaced thoroughfare which extends from an intersection with the Placentia-Yorba highway just north of the railroad crossing to the Santa Ana rancho botanical gardens where it ends. It is the guess of Orange county highway men that the state highway division will shift the crossing eastward, so that trucks and automobiles will cross the railway at a right angle instead of on a sharp oblique as at present.
The $60,000 provided by action of the highway commission late last week for work at the crossing will, according to official announcement, "provide funds for grading and surfacing" at the crossing. Nothing is said about an underpass or an overpass.

County's Psychic Horse Popular at Texas State Fair
"The eyes of Texas" have been on Orange county's 'Serrano,' the fabulous "psychic horse with the college education," as the wonder animal thrilled crowds daily at the big state Fair of Texas in Dallas during October, according to his manager, Jack Dutton, who revealed that 'Serrano' was one of the leading attractions at the Texas Fair. The California "Goodwill Ambassador" to Texas played to near capacity houses every day in Dallas between October 3 and 24.
As usual 'Serrano's' unusual "psychic tricks" were the biggest hit with the Texans, Dutton states. Without help from his trainer, Clint Brush, 'Serrano' located hidden objects under boxes, revealed spectators ages, spelled their middle names, counted the change in their pocket and scores of other mystifying tricks that have made him world famous as the "psychic horse."
Along with the mind-reading acts, 'Serrano' uses numbered and alphabetical blocks to spell and unscramble words of any length or language. Using the blocks, 'Serrano' can also add, subtract and multiply faster than most humans.
The Orange county horse left Dallas October 24 to return to Fullerton for a rest. His next trip may be to the east, Dutton hinted. Previous to the Texas Fair, 'Serrano' was at Sacramento for the California State Fair in September.

INCREASE OUR WATER SUPPLY
Do you want the fullest possible equipment of water supply for your county?
If you do, you will approve one of the Orange County Board Supervisors, including your supervisor, James A. Baker, in acting as rapidly as possible the act for conserving an adal 8000 acre feet of water really in Prado basin. This has one of the major objectives supervisor Baker's administration and its successful accomplishment is now in sight.
Prado dam was being completed supervisor Baker was first led to the board of supervisors two years ago. Then, within a months, World War II froze efforts to develop the water and save water that is now by evaporation and trans-ion through vegetation.
It with the end of war in last, 1945, the supervisors read plans for Padro water condition, and applied for a per- from the federal government conduct exploratory work in the area. As quickly as the permit granted, after some months of by the government, the supervisors drove ahead with the project.
Last year approximately $150,- was expended in laying a line below the dam, as the first step in salvaging swamp and marsh water above the dam. The board had planned an equal expenditure this year on a pipeline above the dam, to drain water in the basin down to the spreading grounds below the dam.
There are preliminary problems and obstacles to meet. State law does not cover swamp and marsh water within the scope of permitted salvage operations, which are limited to storm and flood waters. So a new bill has been drafted and will be introduced in the state legislature at its next session. Then the supervisors will be ready to go with the second pipeline.
This means that a very important increase in Orange County's vital water supply is virtually at hand. That is important news to you and you and you, rancher or city resident, no matter where you live in Orange County.

Chief of Police Warns Owners of Bad Car Lights
Lax automobile owners who are negligent in the care and maintenance of their cars are the cause of many of Anaheim night time auto accidents, Police Chief Mark Stephenson declared.
"Greater safety on the road at night," he said, "is impossible until the careless fellow who thinks he can drive his car with one light on, with faulty misaligned headlamps, poor tires, and brakes, wakes up to the fact that he is a menace on the road at night . . . and does something about it."
With longer nights ahead this fall and winter which means more night driving, it is more important than ever that motorists give their car lights regular care. Chief Stephenson said. An improperly directed headlight can blind the driver of an oncoming car in an instant and cause an accident. Tail lights and warning lights are also necessary accident prevention devices which must be carefully maintained he said.
