Recreation Meets Begin This Week
Touching off a series of meetings, the second annual Orange County Recreation Institute was held Monday night in the Santa Ana high school auditorium with Ferdinand Bahr, recreation consultant of the State Recreation Commission, discussing "The Volunteer Leader in Our Community." These meetings will continue each Monday and Wednesday night at 7:30 o'clock until November 24.
Theme of the series is "Learn by Doing, Seeing, Discussing." Each meeting is designed to bring to view the entire problem of recreation in three different lights.
Small activity groups, led by well known persons in different recreational fields, will deal with such subjects as square dancing, music and song leadership, folk dancing, hostelling, party planning, pantomines and charades, activity for the home, rhythm bands, group and musical mixers, water sports and activities, progressive games, camping and nature activities, relay's and combative games, twisted paper craft, mixed group games, use of scrap materials, puzzles, stunts and tricks, braiding craft, family group games, plaster casting craft, table and quiet games and shell craft.
GET LIMIT OF DUCKS AT LAKE HENSHAW
Rosy dreams of wild duck dinner deluxe came true for Mr. and Mrs. Bob (Trigger) Miller and Bill Wybrant, all of this city, when they bagged the limit of the delectable fowl at Lake Henshaw last weekend. Sunday the trio was driven out of the sportsmen's haven by heavy rains.

Avocado Market Still Far From Being Saturated
Avocado production in southern California has doubled and reduced and doubled again in the past two decades, but the national consumption of avocados even now averages only five ounces per capita per year. Jack Sheppard of Calavo Growers told the crowd attending the annual avocado institute at La Habra last Friday.
The market fluctuates from year to year, but even now all the fruit that can be grown in California can still be sold in fresh fruit channels. The industry hasn't even developed by-products made from avocados in the event the entire crop cannot be sold as fresh fruit. More than half the total crop of southern California is still consumed on the Pacific coast and the market expands slowly because there is little excess fruit to supply new markets.
Sheppard saw, however, a possibility of markets already developed being overloaded in some year of heavy production.
"Figures show," he said, "a total avocado acreage in California of about 16,000 acres. Around one-fifth of that acreage is under bearage. In addition a fair part of that acreage is yet too young to have shown full production. Let those young trees have a little more time in which to develop, give them a mild spring some year and the heaviest crop ever before produced will be doubled or trebled."
The prospect was presented in support of Sheppard's plea that growers unite to continue market development.

Dr. George Zentmyer of the Citrus Experiment Station told growers of finding a new avocado disease—or rather of finding that what had hitherto been regarded as one manifestation of the familiar "root rot" was a disease caused by a wholly different fungus. The disease is commonly known as "avocado wilt" and seems to be caused by the same fungus as causes tomato wilt and a similar disease of peppers.
Dean Robert W. Hodgkin, assistant dean of agriculture of the University of California, thought it unlikely that Florida, Texas or Cuba would ever become a serious competitor of southern California in avocados but he thought Mexico might furnish serious competition if it ever cleaned up its pests and succeeded in having the present quarantine lifted. This, he thought, was a good many years in the future.
2,4-D and other growth regulators, reported Dr. William S. Stewart of the Experiment Station, have so far produced only disappointing results as far as avocado production is concerned.
Mrs. Marian Prentiss, Orange county home demonstration agent, and Lucile Spetman of the same department in Los Angeles county told of many tempting ways in which to serve avocados.
Domingo Harbison of Santa Paula, E. J. McFadden of Tustin, Ray Marsh of La Habra and Elwood Trask of Carlsbad formed a panel to answer questions. Dick Puffer of the Orange county farm advisor's office presided over the panel.
The Institute is held annually under the joint auspices of the Agricultural Extension departments of Los Angeles and Orange counties.

Dealer Markup Smaller on California Fruit
Food retailers, as a rule, have taken a smaller margin on California oranges than they took on Florida oranges, according to a survey reported by a trustworthy Florida source. The survey covered only the period from December 22, 1947 to January 16, 1948, but in that period the jobber and the retailer made a much higher mark-up on Florida fruit than they did on California fruit.
In that period Florida oranges were credited with bringing 55 cents a box on the tree, compared to $1.69 for California oranges, and the delivered price was $2.88 a box for Florida oranges and $4.84 for California fruit. The jobber mark-up on Florida oranges was reported at $1 or 35 per cent while that on California oranges was reported as 59 cents or 12 percent. The retailer was said to have added $2 or 51 per cent more to the price of Florida oranges while he was content with $1.69 or 31 per cent on California oranges.
