Gazette Want Ads Bring Results BIBLE COMMENT FOR OCT. 10 Bible Is Source Of Biographies Of Many Men “THE proper study of mankind is man,” wrote the poet Pope. And there are no finer or more adequate sources of material for that study than are to be found in the 66 books that we call the Bible. The late President Thwing, of Cleveland’s Western Reserve University, made a specialty of collecting books of biography. He once told me that he had 17,000 volumes, of which the greater part were biographies. One can imagine what vast sources of incident, anecdote and illustration could be found in that immense array of books. But though such a collection of biographies might offer great variety and detail, I venture to believe that it would offer no basic facts concerning human life and character that do not somewhere find their most pointed exemplification in the Bible. There we find man in his heights of goodness, and in his depths of evil. There are tragedies of sorrow, disaster and failure, in contrast with experiences of ecstatic joy and sublime feeling. There are literary skills that not even Shakespeare has surpassed, and practical philosophies of living that reveal wisdom. The Bible is a book of prophets, priests and kings. Chapter 11 of Hebrews records the lives and doings of Israel’s great, both men and women. It is a noble chapter. What nation or people could record anything better? And in the history that it summarizes, as in From the Anaheim Gazette, Jan. 31, 1874 The Semi Tropic Fruit company Its early history, the “Punic” faith of the Los Angeles Land company The result of the first years labor On the twentieth day of July 1872, a project, which for quite awhile before had been contemplated by a number of gentlemen residents of Healdsburg, Sonoma County, was practically carried into effect by the organization of a Stock Company. The object of the organization was to raise semi-tropical fruits, and the fundamental principles upon which the members of the Association relied for success, were unity and cooperation. The name of the Association was the “Southern California Semi-Tropical Fruit company” and its first presiding officer was R. H. Gilman, now in charge of the company farm, lying three miles north of Anaheim. As soon as Mr. Gilman was chosen to conduct the management of the company’s affairs, he set forth during the fall of 1872 on a tour of investigation through the southern country in order to select the most eligible site for the future semitropical orchard. Los Angeles and Santa Barba Riverside and San Diego were visited and critically examined but at none of these places were there found so many natural advantages as existed, though in dormant state, as in the vicinity of Anaheim. Chapter 11 of Hebrews records the lives and doings of Israel's great, both men and women. It is a noble chapter. What nation or people could record anything better? And in the history that it summarizes, as in the New Testament itself, are the almost full-length biographies of great individuals — Abraham, Moses, Samuel, Saul, David, Solomon, Jeremiah, Isaiah, Paul, Peter, and many more. But the Bible is also the book of the common man. The most interesting, significant and vital things concern incidents in the lives of the lowly, sometimes named, sometimes unnamed, who played their part or who exemplified some nobility of character and action. What a book! "God's book for man's life," but also the wonderful book of the lives of men. CHRISTIAN SCIENCE "O Lord my God, I cried unto thee, and thou hast healed me." This statement from the Psalms will be the Golden Text of the Sunday Lesson-Sermon in all branches of The Mother Church, The First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Boston. The question "Are Sin, Disease, and Death Real?" is the subject. Matthew relates in his Gospel that a woman from Canaan came to Jesus, saying, "Have mercy on me, O Lord, thou son of David; my daughter is grievously vexed with a devil. But he answered her not a word. . . Then came she and worshipped him, saying, Lord, help me. But he answered and said, It is not meet to take the children's bread, and to cast it to dogs. And she said, Truth, Lord: yet the dogs eat of the crumbs which fall from their masters' able. Then Jesus answered and said unto her, O woman, great is thy faith; be it unto thee even as thou wilt. And her daughter was made whole from that very hour." In "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," Mary Baker Eddy says, "If sickness is real, it belongs to immortality; if true, it is a part of Truth. . . But if sickness and sin are illusions, he awakening from this mortal dream, or illusion, will bring us into health, holiness and immortality. . . This is the salvation which comes through God, the divine Principle, Love, as demonstrated by Jesus." The company purchased last year and have now in Los Angeles, subject to order, 7000 orange, lemon and lime trees, three years old. Mr. Gilman will, during the coming months, set out 2000 trees, his preparations for so doing having been completed. As we understand from him, his company is perfectly satisfied with their location and with the progress that has been made under existing circumstances. They believe that they have secured land in the best portion of southern California; a section, which at the present time, has only one incubus over shadowing it—the Los Angeles and San Bernardino Land Company; a section which will have no superior on the Pacific coast, when the waters of the Santa Ana river have been properly utilized. In the April 17, 1880, issue of the Anaheim Gazette, we find two interesting items: one anticipating an over production of oranges in the more or less distant future and the other the possibility of growing oranges with little or no irrigation. Here they are. "The orchard of the Southern California Semi-Tropical Fruit Company, near Anaheim, will soon begin to yield a revenue to the stockholders. The Superintendent, Mr. R. H. Gilman has shipped large quantities of limes, and a few lemons and oranges, to San Francisco this year, and in another twelve months the sales of to make the fruit much larger than it would be if irrigation was omitted." And now looking forward to over production of oranges in 1880 in this same issue of the Gazette. "Among the probable future industries of this part of Southern California is the making of orange wine, or, as it is termed in France, 'orange amere.' The taste of this wine is said to be delicious, and its more general use is only interdicted by the high price which it commands. When the production of oranges largely exceeds the demand (a state of affairs which some people contend will be witnessed in a few years), the surplus fruit can be utilized in making this wine. Having thus discovered a way to utilize our surplus oranges as well as our surplus lemons and limes (the two last named in the manufacture of citrus acid), our advice is to keep on planting citrus trees." Nixon to Talk At Dinner at Santa Ana Disclosure of Communist infiltration in high places in the administration in Washington are promised when Congressman Richard M. The size, vigor and general thriftiness of the trees is remarkable when the fact is taken into consideration that they were grown almost wholly without water. (Meaning without irrigation.) Mr. Gilman doesn't believe much in irrigation anyhow, and announced his determination to practice it very seldom. A little judicious watering, however, is of value. He has noticed, for instance, that the result of irrigating his lime orchard late in the spring is RAY & OSCAR CLEANERS THREE CONVENIENT LOCATIONS MAIN OFFICE-PLANT 630 So.
