VEGETABLES AND HENS AND PULLETS ANNOUNCED
Continued high-level production of eggs and spring vegetables is recommended by the U.S. Department of Agriculture in 1949 production goals announced September 13. The goals for individual commodities are being announced as the goals committees complete their work for the new commodity seasons. All production goals or guides recommended by the department are referred to USDA State Councils for consideration.
To assure an abundance of eggs to meet high market demand, which is partially due to high meat prices, the department recommends that farmers of the nation carry into next year the maximum number of hens and pullets consistent with good poultry management practices. Regional variations in culling trends and practices are recognized by the goal recommendations.
The suggested national goal calls for 425 million hens and pullets on farms on January 1, 1949. This would mean retaining on farms a larger proportion of the summer flocks than in recent years — 75 percent of the number on farms August 1 compared with 71 percent last year, when feed supplies were reduced by bad weather.
With 425 million hens and pullets, abundant feed supplies, and good management, the nation's

Old Medicines Still Best for Citrus Pests
In spite of the hundreds of new insecticides tried out by the California University's Citrus Experiment Station near Riverside, nothing has yet appeared to take the place of three old insecticides. These are HNC fumigation, sprayes and nicotine.
Some of the new insecticides according to the annual report by R. S. Woglum, Exchange entomologist, to the board of directors have shown promises in a limited field. But some have been so effective they killed beneficial insects which kept other pests under control and some pests effectively controlled have creased in severity of damage crops while others have shown creased immunity with repeat use.

have shown promises in a limited field. But some have been so effective they killed beneficial insects which kept other pests under control and some pests more effectively controlled have creased in severity of damage crops while others have shown increased immunity with repeat use.
Citrus growers of southern California spend between $7 and millions annually for pest control and the annual bill has increased to the point where it is the main cultural cost for the average grower in some districts. The pests now absorb a major part this total bill. They are red scorpions and red spider throughout orange belt and red spider at bud mite in Ventura and San Barbara counties.

Rattler Strikes
Anaheim Man
Rattlesnakes do not bother Grant Stiner, who operates the Anaheim Help Yourself Laundry, 422 South Los Angeles street. When he uncovered a three-foot diamond back specimen by lifting a stack of shingles at Palos Verdes where he was helping to build some homes, he picked it up.
The rattler wiggled enough in Stiner's hand to arch his head and strike one of his fingers. But the fangs missed and only the rear and non-poisonous teeth connected with Stiner. The Anaheim man slashed the wound quickly and sucked the finger to avert any possible poisoning, then recaptured the snake and brought him home. Stiner suffered no ill effects.
