Ask Growers to Help Solve Small Orange Problem A concerted attack upon the problem of small oranges has been planned by the Citrus Experiment Station of the University of California which has invited all farm advisors and their assistants in the citrus belt to a conference to be held October 7 and 9 at the station near Riverside. It is planned that as many as 100 groves in each county which have records of better than average sizes will be surveyed. Growers of larger sizes will be asked to describe their cultural practices in detail—how and in what quantities they have irrigated, what fertilization practices has been followed, and many other phases of growing. Comparison of these cultural practices will be made with those of orchards in which small sizes have predominated. From the comparison, it is hoped that some light will be shed on the No. 1 problem of the orange grower. The activity of the extension service resulted from grower complaints that they had not been informed of what the experiment station was doing to solve small sizes on which price is sharply lower than for larger fruit. Out of the conference is expected to come a program which will illuminate the whole field of citrus culture. Phil Twombly to Manage Campaign For McFadden Ralph J. MANY STRAY ANIMALS TAKE 'LAST JOURNEY' Sometimes the job of being a pound master is not a pleasant one. Bob Spencer, local pound master in charge of the animal shelter, to the east of the 1100 block North Olive street, has made this discovery. During a five month period from May 1 to September 1, last, he put "to sleep," permanently, 189 dogs, 467 cats and four possums. An effort is made by Spencer to locate owners of strayed animals, especially pooches needing homes. Some of the dogs that find temporary shelter in the city pound are thoroughbreds, others although of more complex ancestry, are "intelligent and friendly by disposition," and make good pets, says Spencer. PASTOR, WIFE BACK FROM LAKE TAHOE Rev. and Mrs. Howard S. Congdon, 208 East Broadway, Anaheim, returned here last week after enjoying a month's vacation at Lake Tahoe. He is pastor of the First Presbyterian church of this city. LICENSE TO WED A marriage license was obtained by Keith W. Earll of Yorba Linda and Velma Mae Olson of Fullerton late last week at the county court house in Santa Ana.
