Measurements of Tulare Navels Show Fruit Small
Measurements of navel oranges in Tulare county as of September 1 showed they grew .282 of an inch in August. In August, 1947 the growth of navels in that district was .273.
But the navel crop in Tulare county September, 1, went 562 to the box. In 1947 it took only 325 oranges to fill a box on that date. Which means the navel crop in central California is going to be late this year. And unless there are early rains, orange growers and handlers are predicting the fruit will be two packing sizes smaller than it was last season.

Fusha of Independencia Colony near this city and Everett Fusha of Los Angeles, died last Friday night at Orange county hospital from a blow on the head causing a subdural hemorrhage, according to the findings of an autopsy report. It is also reported the child was suffering from bronchial pneumonia but this was not the cause of his death.
The child's mother admitted to Sheriff's Deputy Pete Klyne that she had been living with Ralph D. Flint the last two months. Klyne declared Mrs. Fusha admitted she and Flint had punished the baby on many occasions because he cried too much.
Dr. Malcolm J. Paulsen of the hospital assertedly declared the child was virtually covered from head to foot with bruises.
The child's father, Everett Fusha declared he had divorced his wife about four months ago and had been sending $50 a month toward support of the child.
An inquest is being held during this week at Backs, Campbell and Kaulbars mortuary where funeral arrangements are to be made at a later date.

His craft weighs all of 260 pounds.
Trolling with flying fish for marlin with Williams were Brad Downey and Ray Swickert, both of the municipal trailer court in Newport. Less than 15 minutes out of the jetty the first marlin was spotted, hooked 200 yards away. Downey hooked "the big one that got away." At 11:45 o'clock that morning Williams got a blind strike from his marlin which he brought to gaff 31 minutes later.
A total of nine marlin were weighed in at the angling club Labor Day, he stated.
