WASHINGTON AS SEEN By Congressman JOHN PHILLIPS We got away on September 1, not exactly as scheduled, but on the way to Sacramento and the Bay region. The trip to Hanford, intended for these ten days, will be postponed until November, and the Bay Region inspections, set for later, will be made now. That will get me back to Santa Ana, to make my annual "Report" at an open meeting there, on the evening of the 10th. As a confirmed county fair addict, it was good to find the opening of the State Fair on the 2nd could fit into the new schedule. The Governor and his family arrived in an old Wells-Fargo stage coach, to open the gates and put up the flag, and almost the next item on the program was the presentation of two young date trees to the State Fair on behalf of Riverside county. Senator Nelson Dilworth of Hemet did the honors, handing a scroll, hand-lettered, to Fred Bixby of Long Beach, the president of the board of directors of the State Fair, while other directors, H. O. Davis of Indio, and Ward Walkup of San Francisco looked on appreciatively, and I hovered in the background, smiling the stock smile of a man in public life getting photographed and Aviation Cadets Enlistments Fall Short of Needs Master Sergeant Henry E. Loeffelhardt of the Anaheim office of the U. S. Army and U. S. Air Force Recruiting Service announced today that applications for Aviation Cadet training are still below requirements for the next class which starts in October. The deadline for submitting applications is about September 15th. Applicants must be unmarried citizens between the ages of 20 and 26½, of excellent character, sound physique and in good health. They must have earned at least one half of the credits leading to a degree at an accredited college or university or be able to pass an educational examination. This is one of the finest opportunities ever offered to young men interested in learning to fly. Anyone interested is invited to call at the local recruiting office, 128 South Los Angeles St., Anaheim, for additional information. Enlisted Men's Jobs Protected Under Act of '48 Job protection for men without previous military service who volunteer for three-year enlistments in the U. S. Army or the U. S. Air Force is guaranteed by the Selective Service Act of 1948, it was announced today by M/Sgt. H. E. Loeffelhardt, Commanding Officer of the Anaheim Recruiting station. Sgt. Loeffelhardt also stated that Reserve officers and Reserve enlisted men called to active duty are as fully protected under the same re-employment rights of the Senator Nelson Dilworth of Hemet did the honors, handing a scroll, hand-lettered, to Fred Bixby of Long Beach, the president of the board of directors of the State Fair, while other directors, H. O. Davis of Indio, and Ward Walkup of San Francisco looked on appreciatively, and I hovered in the background, smiling the stock smile of a man in public life getting photographed and trying to prevent an old friend, M. D. Bradshaw, the cameraman, from catching me sideface (which was one of nature's oversights), and keeping an eye on Max Bookman, who had his eye, in turn, on the water being used for background effects in various buildings. The rest of the "atmosphere" was furnished by Mr. and Mrs. J. D. Sedwell, (Joe and Joe), formerly of Indio, who had a date booth there and who brought up the trees from Lee Anderson's ranch; Mrs. Leonra Koehler of the Indio Florists, and Mrs. Trinidad Manzo, of Indio, who makes a most attractive Arabian, for all that group wore Arabian costumes. Mrs. Phillips and Mrs. Bookman completed the group. Quite a reunion. We did the fair, toe and heel, and stayed overnight in Sacramento. Friday we went to San Francisco for the annual luncheon of the American Legion, at convention time, for men in public life. Before I get home again, I will have seen a dozen government laboratories or plants and attended the annual "John Phillips' Luncheon" arranged by my farm friends in the north, where we talk over our problems for the year ahead. ALL STATES PICNIC SET FOR SUNDAY The twenty-fourth annual All States picnic will be held next Sunday in Bixby Park, Long Beach. Features will include a concert by that city's municipal band and an address by Mayor Chace and by Congressman Willis Bradley. State flags including those of Alaska and Hawaii will be displayed. Registration will be by states. Coffee and refreshments will be on the grounds, it was announced. Turkey Crop 12% Up in '48 California's turkey crop will be 12 per cent above last year with an estimated 4,544,000 birds now ready for market, the California crop and livestock reporting service has announced. The state's turkey raiser acted wisely in obtaining large numbers of eggs for hatching purposes when breeder hens throughout the nation were scarce, the crop reporting service said. The August growth progress report of the service indicates that the industry has taken large strides in controlling poultry diseases. MONTEBELLO PLANS PIONEER 'DAZE' Pioneer "Daze," annual festival at Montebello, sponsored by that city's Chamber of Commerce will be held September 24 and 25, it was announced by city officials. A barbecue and eight-act vaudeville show will be given in the Municipal Park beginning at 4 p.m. September 25. At 2 o'clock that afternoon a huge parade including more than a dozen bands and featuring several western stars, will march along Whittier boulevard in Montebello. The traditional Kangaroo Court, Old Smoothie Brigade, coronation ball and big carnival will complete the program. Small Fry Out-Talks Co? Not too familiar with the game laws, Bruce Carlton of St. Petersburg, Fla., tries to reason with a cop after hauling in an undersized bass. The fish was a little short of the one-foot legal length, but Officer Buskirk managed to stretch a point, if not the fish. Bruce kept his bass, and Buskirk kept his ticket, making the fish the sucker in the deal. GAREY'S FURNITURE CAR IT'S COLOSSAL! STUPEN HURREE! HURREE!! GREATEST SHOW IN TOWN!!
