LOOKING BACKWARD C. E. Holcomb "But now they desire a better country." Mankind has had the "Wanderlust" from his creation to modern times. Within the past few weeks, the "Portola" party started from San Diego retracing the original journey of Don Gaspar de Portola northward through California, opening up California to Spanish colonization. It would almost seem that the "desire for a better country" is innate. The "pot of gold" that lies at the end of the rainbow lures us on. Westward the star of empire led the way and guided Columbus over the boundless, uncharted sea and a new country, which we now believe to be a better country, was discovered and the Spanish nation, by right of discovery and might of arms proceeded to exploit to their advantage wherever they gained a foot hold. Long before the art of printing, there were roving "Bards" in all countries who invented and related tales of skill, daring and treasures vast. One of these bards in Spain was Garcia Ordoniz de Montalvo, the "Jules Vern" of his time. One of the sagas of de Montalvo contained the first and original appearance of the word "California." This word was a new one and was the name that the old romancer gave to the mythical country of his tale. This California was a land teeming with gold and peopleled by beautiful Amazons of whom the queen was beautiful beyond compare. When the roving Spanish buccaneers discovered Mexico, inhabited by the Aztecs and later conquered by the Spaniards under Cortez, they were astonished at the gold of the Aztecs, which they seized and were covetous of reaching a city of gold situate in a land of which they heard and sent various expeditions searching for it in a new world that they called California, Montalvo's dream land. The northern continent of America had doubtless been discovered by the bold, roving Vikings of the north long before the discovery made by Columbus. These Vikings were not so much interested in "golden cities" as they were in fishing and hunting. Later, on account of religious persecution in the English island group, the Puritans emigrated to the new world and as one writer has said, "could worship God according to the dictates of their own conscience and make other people do the same." These settlements were established by the Puritans and others at various points on the eastern shore of North America. Not all these emigrants and their posterity were content to remain in the original settlements but kept pushing westward until the Mississippi river was reached and crossed and St. Joe, Missouri, became the "jumping off" place where hunters and trappers equipped themselves to push on ever westward until they reached California. These American hunters and trappers met the hunters and trappers of the Hudson Bay Company of Canada somewhere above Sacramento. It was a long, tiresome journey from the Missouri river to the coast. One beset by "dangers and ruffians." Many of the earliest American settlers in California were hunters and trappers. Perhaps the best known is Warner of the Warner Hot Springs. In 1858 "rapid, dependable scheduled transportation" was provided over the famous "Butterfield Trail," and here is appended a copy of its first scheduled emigrants and their posterity were content to remain in the original settlements but kept pushing westward until the Mississippi river was reached and crossed and St. Joe, Missouri, became the "jumping off" place where hunters and trappers equipped themselves to push on ever westward until they reached California. The first dependable stage line, coach and mail service was that on the Butterfield Trail, established in 1858 and continued to function until March, 1861. The fare from San Francisco to St. Louis and vice versa was $200. Local fares between intervening stations was figured at about 10 cents a mile. Meals and provisions for passengers were at their own expense and not included in the stage fare. The following is a copy of the old "Time Table" between San Francisco and St. Louis.
