State’s Flocks of Sheep Diminish Despite Higher Wool and Lamb Prices (Western News Service) California’s multi-million dollar sheep raising industry is moving toward gradual extinction. Though the state remains fourth in the number of sheep on ranges, the total number has decreased by 1,234,000 in ten years, or almost half of the 1938 figure, according to information released by the state department of agriculture. Totals of sheep on the range in 1938 were 3,050,000, but by 1948 they had decreased to 1,816,000. Main causes for the decline are: 1 intensive farming throughout the state has cut down the amount of land open for pasturage. Available pastures is being leased at fantastically high prices and sheep raisers cannot afford to lease the land. 2 Necessary labor for proper raising or sheep has disappeared at an alarming rate. Conditions became so acute that the federal government recently flew Mexican and Spanish Basque shepherders to the United States. This was a stop-gap measure and did not solve the labor shortage. 3 Sheep are susceptible to a multitude of diseases that do not harm other cattle. The California livestock man feels that there is more profit and less trouble in raising other types of cattle. 4 The inevitable competition of synthetic fabrics in causing a decrease in the demand for wool. Synthetics are now being developed that will have all the characteristics of fine wool and can be produced at lower costs. 5 Feed prices have risen to three times the pre-war cost while th price of slaughtered lambs has risen only twice its pre-war level. The federal government supported the price of lamb and wool through the last four years but even this measure has not slowed the decrease in the number of sheep within the state due to the reasons listed above. Prospects of lower lamb meat prices will not be good for several years, an agricultural department spokesman said. Lamb flocks are still decreasing and as long as there is a demand for the remaining stock of meat there will be competition for the meat among consumers. This will be reflected in high prices. Walnut Marketing Order Changes Up to Growers (Western News Service) California walnut producers and handlers will be given a chance to vote on whether they wish to amend the present federal marketing order applying to walnuts. Under the present order, a specified percentage of each grade and size of walnut moving in interstate commerce, must be set aside by packers and sold as shelled nuts or sold in export markets. Under the amendment, the packers would be allowed to select and set aside the percentage and grade of nuts for this purpose. Copies of the marketing order have been mailed to growers and handlers in Washington, Oregon and California. Defective Title: Delays State's Armory Program (Western News Service) Delays in the construction armories for the California military guard are jeopardizing the tire state defense program. This was the statement today by adjutant general D. O'Sullivan before the assoc Military Affairs Committee. O'Sullivan said that not only are the armories authorized by legislature in a ten million construction program has started. "The situation, O'Sullivan clared, "is so serious I hesitate say what will happen if we get the armories soon. I don’t how we can continue the California guard on its present title already we have relegated federal government to a second position among national gov't because of a lack of housing." Testimony of Earl Washburn deputy director of the Department of Finance, on the armory station developed the fact that delay in authorizing construc tion of the building in 17 cities with armory units have been applied is due to difficulties in clearing title to sites. Washburn told the comm local governments have wri clauses into deeds and laws which are unacceptable to state. The committee ordered finance department to prepare distribute sample leases and which are acceptable to the Committee chairman Richard Collister of Mill Valley said communities should be ad d that if they do not accept the formula the armories will constructed elsewhere. 4 The inevitable competition of synthetic fabrics in causing a decrease in the demand for wool. Find DDT Less Lethal to Flies Many uses of DDT for the controlling of flies have found in recent months that it is not as effective as it was when DDT was first used for this purpose. A. H. Holland, assistant farm advisor, reports that this is apparently the result of the survival of flies which have resistance to the insecticide. As DDT continues to be used, it is expected that greater resistance on the part of the flies will be prevalent, provided the foregoing theory is proved correct. Some people believe that the DDT compound, itself, is not the same chemical formula as that which was earlier sold. Others feel that freshly compounded DDT will be more effective than older DDT. Dr. James R. Douglas, assistant professor of parasitology on the Davis campus of the University of California, is making some investigations on this subject, and since DDT is not effective, he is tentatively recommending as a substitute 50 percent wettable chlordane at the rate of 32 pounds per hundred gallons of water. He also suggests that Methoxy DDT or chlorinated camphene can be used. Holland says that these compounds can be purchased under various trade names. He also suggests that since the information on these products is rather limited, any comments brought to him by users of these materials would be much appreciated. District Attorney John Quincy Brown of Sacramento county fold the committee California district attorneys favored raising maximum fines imposed upon bookmakers from the present $200 ceiling to $5,000. He said he believed a law making the possession of slot machines illegal would simplify the enforcement problem many counties are facing with regard to laws against such gaming devises. Brown said some counties have passed ordinances to this effect but asserted the state should enact statutes to assure uniform regulations on the subject. Other recommendations of the California district attorneys association which were presented to the committee included law changes which would permit the use of county jail records being used in criminal cases to aid in determining sentences and extension of probation laws to allow judges granting probation for more offenses than now permissable under the law. Tubbs Ready for Quick Decline Although Quick Decline is not widely present in Orange county groves, the county is opening a new pathological laboratory at its insectary on East Vermont street. Intended as a measure of vigilance, its sole function in the beginning will be the quick detection of the disease in any of the groves in the county, according to Dixson W. Tubbs, county agricultural commissioner. Last year inspectors of the county agricultural department walked through 67,000 acres of the county's citrus groves looking for evidences of the virus disease. They looked at 4,764,270 trees. They found decline present in 81 orchards having a total acreage of 2073. In a total of 132 orchards they found decline present or that it had been present and the diseased trees had been removed. The county's citrus acreage is divided into areas for the purpose of decline control. One is an area from which trees cannot be removed to other areas because of the presence of decline. In another area removal is possible only under certain contingencies. War Surplus Goods SAVE WITH THESE!
