Growers Charge Overpayment on Citrus Freight An estimated 200 orange growers who attended a meeting called by the California Fruit Producers association at the Anaheim Union high school auditorium last Friday night sat up and took notice when Tom Strain of Lindsay told them he estimated orange growers were paying the railroads about $3,000,000 more a year for freight than they should pay. He said the railroads were paid $1.57 a box for carrying oranges from California to eastern markets on the theory that a box weighs 85 pounds, while the actual average weight is 80 pounds. That amounts, he said, to an overpayment of about 6 per cent. Orange growers are particularly sensitive to assertions that the railroads are overcharging for carrying citrus fruits because the rate was boosted stiffly again only recently. Don Anderson, public relations officer for the California Fruit Growers Exchange, said this week that this organization had a check on weights of oranges and lemons in progress for the past six months and that if the charge of Strain was substantiated the Exchange would certainly go after the railroads for a refund of overcharges. Present figures, he said, indicated that Valencia oranges in some cases weighed more than 85 pounds to the box and that packing house practices made for a wide variation in box weights. The sampling, Anderson said, would be completed shortly and if the facts warrant, the weights will Optomists to Hear 'Senator Fishface' Speech When "Senator Fishface," the pixilated politician, addresses the Anaheim Optomists club tonight (Thursday) at 7 o'clock at Mother's Kitchen, it will be politics, but not as usual, program chairman Ernie Bullock an- George J.
