All Drivers Are Fools ('cept You) All drivers are fools, except you — that's human nature and a propounded idea that we drivers have voiced out loud or maybe in our mind a hundred times — "What does that fool think he's doing?" when maybe it was as much our fault as that of the other driver. Ever think about that? One of the first things to do when you get a car is to get the feel of it, learn its temperament and its best driving qualities. Test your brakes in the first 100 yards of driving each time you take it out of the garage. If the steering doesn't feel quite normal, find out the reason why it doesn't. Now when you get out on the road watch the road signs. They are put there for your protection and not as roadside decoration or something to obstruct your view to the side. Learn what the signs mean and learn what the various shape signs mean, each have a definite meaning. For example, the octagonal sign means "STOP." You're coming to a stop street, a trunk line junction or something else that demands a full stop. The round sign means "RAILROAD CROSSING." One horizontal bar designates one track, two bars a double track, etc., the diamond shaped sign means "SLOW DOWN - DANGER AHEAD." It might be a curve, a turn, a hill, narrow bridge, end of pavement, bad road and many other things. The sign itself will be marked "Curve," "Turn," etc., but the shape of the sign invariably is a warning to slow down, HI-WAY SAFETY Orange County, A Great Empire Rich agricultural lands, semi-tropical scenery, varied recreational facilities, wide industrial advantages and outstanding civic and home benefits—all these are highlights of Orange county. Famous as a vacation spot, Orange county also boasts progressive cities, large industrial plants and citrus groves and ranches which support the largest population in its history. Santa Ana, the county seat, has a population of 42,000 persons. The original county building in Santa Ana was erected in 1900. At that time, it served a population of $30,310. Today, the group of four modern buildings housing county officials and staffs serve more than 175,000 county residents. A blend of famous California sunshine, pure mountain water and rich soil result in the production of citrus fruits for which the county is famous. More than 75,000 acres of citrus groves represent an investment of millions of dollars, labor, water, soil food and fertilization. Packing houses recently launched new growing enterprises for juice processing canning and special packing, increasing the county's citrus output. Orange county harbor is the scene of such famous events as the yacht races, the flight of the 'Snowbirds' by the youngster and the tournament of the light with hundreds of illuminated craft and regattas. The Newport Balboa area rates high as one of the greatest recreational harbors in the country. The assessed value thing else that demands a full stop. The sign itself will be marked "Curve," "Turn," etc., but the shape of the sign invariably is a warning to slow down, something is coming up. The square road sign is used at "SCHOOL ZONES" and is also used to convey important information, such as Hospital Zone, Men Working, No Passing 700 Feet, Stop 600 Feet — a warning of what is coming up ahead, so you can be ready for it. The horizontal or vertical, is usually used for giving special traffic directions — Parking 9 a.m. to 5. p.m., No Left Turn, Sound Horn, Turn Right on Geen Arrow, Speed Limit 30 mph, etc. Good drivers always know what is behind too. Their eyes are not glued to the road but keep a watch all around — to the sides, to the rear in the mirror, far down the road, just ahead. Watch your speedometer because speed is expensive not only in the additional consumption of gas and oil and three times more tire wear, but speed is deadly — a car going 40 strikes four times as hard as one going 20, and one going 60 strikes nine times as hard, takes nine times longer to stop. At 70, you hit as hard as if you had gone over Niagara Falls and landed on a rock. Night driving is three times as deadly as day driving so in order to be on the safer side cut your speed way down. To minimize glare, reduce speed and look down at the center road. And don't get so angry at line or right-hand edge of the guy with his lights undimmed, that you finally flick yours up—that may be the time you have that ONE wreck. Always keep your car in first class working condition. Keep your wheels in balance and check your tires regularly. Keep the motor in lip-top mechanical condition and always, yes always, keep your brakes adjusted, for a faulty brake has caused more wrecks than any thing else. When 48 drivers chosen as representative of the nation's best were asked to list the main reasons for their excellent records, this no bigger than the people of America can accomplish. Newsmen at GOP Convention Swig Orange Juice Fresh California Valencia orange juice is refreshing the newspaper reporters covering the Republican National Convention at Philadelphia this week. One of the new automatically refrigerated juice dispensers has been provided by Sunkist for the big newsroom in which 1500 reporters at the Quaker City are working. "We understand that Florida had originally asked to serve orange juice at the convention but begged off at the last minute," stated D. M. Anderson, director of information for the Exchange. "We were glad to handle the juice service and will do the same for the Democratic convention reporters." In addition to the juice service for newsmen, orange juice is being served in the California delegation headquarters at the Warwick Hotel and at Governor Warren's headquarters at the Bellevue-Stratford. The California delegation service is sponsored by the Republicans from the State. To make the orange really noticeable, Warren campaign buttons are printed on the facsimile of a California orange. The dispenser being used at the convention is one of the trial models of radically new design. It holds 5 gallons of juice under constant proper refrigeration and agitation. Preliminary tests show that the dispenser builds soda fountain and restaurant sales through better quality juice and ease of service. The Exchange expects to have 400 similar machines in use before the end of the summer. PLAN TO WED A marriage license was obtained by Walter Roscoe Hodson and Ruth Alice Peabody, both of La Habra, this week at the county court house in Santa Ana. PINK RIBBONS Mr. and Mrs. Howard Loudon, 815 North West street, became the parents of a baby daughter, Fri- enterprises for juice processing canning and special packing, increasing the county's citrus output. Orange county harbor is the scene of such famous events as the yacht races, the flight of the 'Snowbirds' by the youngsters and the tournament of the light with hundreds of illuminated craft and regattas. The Newport Balboa area rates high as one of the greatest recreational harbors in the country. The assessed value of the 5,000 boats in the harbor is set at more than five and one-half million dollars. It is a boonize for thousands of fishermen who try their skill on approximately 200 sport fishing boats. Some 600 craft are devoted to commercial fishing. Famous throughout the county is the coming cultural attraction at Laguna Beach known as the Festival of Arts. This year they live picture tableaux, dramas and dance programs and panorama of art and craft exhibitions will be featured July 14 to 25. Five years Laguna has been the picturesque setting for a unique collection of artists nestled in the slopes of the hills overlooking the Pacific ocean. Flourishing ceramics industries may be found in the coastal area. Of special historical interest San Juan Capistrano's mission where the swallows return each year, Santa Ana's Charles Bowers Memorial Museum at the Rancho Santa Ana Botanical garden. Modern churches, schools, drive-in theater, trailer count two transcontinental railroads, electric interurban line, bus lines and several main highways are more than 1,000 miles of paved roads are other attractions. Orange county operates its own 300-acre airport, complete with administration building and tower, hangars and repair shops. Has a concrete runway 5,000 feet long and 300 feet wide. More than 250 private planes are also in operation privately owned fields in the county. There is the Toro Marine base and air field at the Navy's lighter than air station. Opening its second year Holiday Stage, professional summer stock company will open a ten-week stand beginning June 28, at Twin Tin. Anaheim, thriving oldest city in the heart of the county, wins national recognition with its annual Civic Progress Week featuring huge fair and exhibition Always keep your car in first class working condition. Keep your wheels in balance and check your tires regularly. Keep the motor in lip-top mechanical condition and always, yes always, keep your brakes adjusted, for a faulty brake has caused more wrecks than any thing else. When 48 drivers chosen as representative of the nation's best were asked to list the main reasons for their excellent records, this reason led all the rest: KEEPING THE CAR IN PERFECT CONDITION. But a check of 924,509 vehicles found every third car unable to meet minimum safety standards: How does your car rate? If on that long vacation trip you begin to feel fatigued or weary, stop and rest or better yet, find a nice hotel or motel room and get a good night's sleep, then the next morning you feel refreshed and ready to go again. Precaution is worth many times more than the few hours of additional driving you MIGHT get in by keeping on the road, becoming drowsy, possibly falling asleep and waking up to find yourself in a white bed, swathed in bandages and finally realizing you are in a hospital suffering from major injuries sustained in an auto crash. You could be lying on a cold slab in a morgue. We pick up our papers every day and see where a tragic accident has occurred in our own vicinity or near our city, maybe several lives lost or the occupants of the car seriously injured and possibly maimed for life. Not a pleasant thought, is it? The President of the United States has recently called for a reduction of 25 per cent in the total accident death toll by 1950 — from 100,000 to 75,000. To meet that goal we must reduce traffic accident deaths by 8,000 so that the 1950 total will be no higher than 24,000. It is a big job, but PLAN TO WED A marriage license was obtained by Walter Roscoe Hodson and Ruth Alice Peabody, both of La Habra, this week at the county court house in Santa Ana.
