WESLEY METHODIST 632 North Los Angeles street BIBLE COMMENT FOR JUNE 29 Many Find Goal Of the Golden Age Still Not Achieved IN his poem, "An Interview With Myles Standish," James Russell Lowell wrote of "men of vision, whose gaunt eyes see golden ages rising." He did not think much of some of these dreamers. But poets, prophets and saints have long dreamed and spoken of a golden age. It has been a prolific theme in literature. Thomas More gave his dream of it in his famous book, "Utopia." In our own time Bellamy portrayed it in "Looking Backward." But these and other visions of a golden age pale in comparison with the expectation of a Messiah and the coming of a Messianic kingdom. They arose in the Jewish world in the centuries before the birth of Jesus and found expression in the noblest passages of the later prophecies of Israel. Christians found fulfillment of those prophecies in the coming of Jesus as Messiah and King. They saw the golden age begun, if not fully established, in the kingdom He proclaimed. They pray, "Thy kingdom come," and that the will of God may be "done in earth as it is done in heaven." But they see a world in which that goal is not yet achieved, and in which it will not be until all is brought under the rule of Christ. That would be the golden age. Some Christians look for a return of Jesus to earth. Though they think of Jesus as Messiah in THE AMERICAN LEGION'S two-day Fireworks Show at the Los Angeles Coliseum July 4 and 5 is the subject of an earnest conversation between her horse and Miss Laura Lee Koepp who asks that he turn in the best performance of his career. "Hey, you burglars, we'll be gone a few days, so won't you drop in?" Now you wouldn't be guilty of issuing such an invitation, would you? None of us knowingly would but nine out of every ten, a vacationer will unwittingly leave this sort of an invitation for a burglar to accept. There are tricks to every trade and the house thief has his own peculiar set of little tricks that usually pays handsome dividends. He thrives on the carelessness of homeowners. He may phone your resident to learn, not if you're in, but if you're out. If someone answers, he fakes an excuse, hangs up, scratches your name for that night. But, if there's no answer, he'll phone again in a half hour to make doubly sure you're out maybe just for the evening. For a leisurely visit when the whole family is out of town, he'll dial on several successive days. The answer to that little trick, is have the telephone disconnected while you're away on that vacation trip. Light means as much to a burglar as to a storm-tossed sailor. A porch lit up, with the rest of the house dark, is a sure sign you're out. He wont be fooled by a dim light in the hall or living room either. Police advise plenty of lights, even suggest leaving the radio on. It has been found that a light in the bathroom usually convinces Mr. Burglar that someone is home. So whether you're gone for the evening, a few days, weeks or months, its all the same to him. He does his job thoroughly and with small loss of time. All he needs is the sign you've left, telling him the coast is clear. When you contemplate that trip, be sure to stop the milkman from his daily delivery, the newspaper GRACE LUTHERAN CHURCH South Palm and Elim streets Rev. J. K. Jung, pastor. Phone 3454. H. L. But they see a world in which that goal is not yet achieved, and in which it will not be until all is brought under the rule of Christ. That would be the golden age. Some Christians look for a return of Jesus to earth. Though they think of Jesus as Messiah in His first coming, their look toward the future in the hope of His second coming is not unlike the looking toward the future of many Jews, who do not regard Jesus as the Messiah, but who believe the Messiah is still to come. What of the golden age today? The triumph of the Prince of Peace, the one whom Isaiah called Wonderful, Counsellor, the one whom Christians call the Eternal Christ, seems far off in a world of violence and hate. But it was in such a world that the faith, hope and vision arose. It was in such a world that the prophets lived and spoke. Can we doubt or fear where the noblest of all mankind have had faith and courage? CHRISTIAN SCIENCE Sunday Lesson-Sermon subject will be "Christian Science." "Christian Science" will be the Sunday Lesson-Sermon subject in all branches of The Mother Church. The First Church of Christ Scientist, in Boston, The Golden Text, chosen from Isaiah reads, "O house of Jacob, come ye, and let us walk in the light of the Lord." In Matthew's Gospel it is related that "Jesus went about all Galilee teaching in their syngagogues, and preaching the gospel of the kingdom... and taught them, saying,Blessed are the poor in spirit; for their's is the kingdom of heaven.... Ye are the light of the world.A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid.Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick;and it giveth light unto all that are in the house.Let your light so shine before men that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven." Mary Baker Eddy writes in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures:" "Some individuals assimilate truth more readily than others,但 any student, who adheres to the divine rules of Christian Science and imbibes the spirit of Christ,可 demonstrate Christion Science, cast out error, heal the sick, and add continually to his store of spiritual understanding, potency, enlightenment, and success."
