Vets to Draw for 54 Irrigated Farms On Yuma Mesa Last of This Month
Homestead settlers for 54 farms on the Yuma Mesa Division of the Gila Project will be selected at a public drawing in the American Legion Hall in Yuma at 10 a.m. June 29, Regional Director E. A. Moritz, of the Bureau of Reclamation has announced.
Names of the 54 homesteaders and 54 alternates will be drawn by lot from a glass jar containing the capsulated names of more than 600 veterans of World Wars I and II, the Spanish American War and the Philippine Insurrection, Moritz said. The capsules will be taken from the jar by heads of veterans organizations of the Yuma area and opened by J. P. Collopy, superintendent of the Gila Project and secretary of the settlement board. The names will be posted on a large blackboard in the front of the hall.
The drawing for the Gila Project homesteads, opened to entry last December 30, will be the second such event in Yuma this year. The first was held last March 10, for 26 farms, comprising 1,297 acres on the Yuma Project.
The veterans whose names will be placed in the capsules were screened by the settleemnt board from among 890 applications received at the close of the 3 months' veterans' preference filing period last March 30. Applications were received from 37 States, Alaska and the District of Columbia with California leading with of the applicants whose names are drawn and may call in each for a personal interview. The 54 Gila Project homesteads comprising 4,940 acres are located in the general vicinity of the Yuma Army Air Base just east of Yuma. They range in size from 40 to 160 acres, the smaller units being suitable for specialty crops. The land has been predeveloped and planted to alfalfa, crops of which will be growing on the land when the homesteader makes entry. Most of the land included in the homesteads offered is under lease to private operators for the production of alfalfa hay. These expire on June 30. The Bureau of Reclamation will care for the land from that date until the successful homesteaders complete their entries. Each homesteader will receive two barrack buildings or the equivalent from the Army Air Base which he may move onto his farm to utilize as a house or other farm buildings.

Vets of All Services Can Join Reserves
Veterans of all the armed services — Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force, National Guard and State Guard — are now eligible for assignment in the California Reserves according to an announcement by Major General Daniel H. Hudelson, commanding general of California's famous 40th Division of the National Guard.
Qualified officers and men who volunteer for such assignment will perform a volunteer service for their state and their home communities much on the order of "The Minute Men" of Colonial days.
Purpose of the reserves is to supplement the operations of the California National Guard and to be immediately available for any military emergency.
Composed entirely of volunteers, members of the reserves will receive no compensation unless called to active duty by the governor or the adjutant general. In the meanwhile, nothing but hard work confronts them. The new organization, obviously, is not a haven for men who merely wish to wear a uniform.

LOOKING BACKWARD
From the Anaheim Gazette, May 5, 1893. — The high school election at Fullerton last Saturday carried by a large majority. A right vote was polled, showing a lack of interest in the election, but no opposition to the high school manifested itself. The vote was 70 for, 8 against.
The citizens of these high school districts are to be congratulated upon the result of the election. High school is ever an unerring indication of the intelligence of the people and in the present case, it has added the charm of making the people forever exempt of a county high school situate a dozen miles away. They have taken time by the forelock and are to be commended for the excellence of their work.
A short time after Orange County was formed and Santa Ana had gained the county seat through an election called for the purpose of selecting a seat for the government of the new county, its citizens were so elated that they thought they had enough "votes" to grab another plum for the towns advancement, largely at the expense of the other tax payers in the county; so they called an election for the formation of a County High School district with the high school located in Santa Ana, but supported by the taxpayers of the entire county.
schools in Anaheim, Fullerton, Garden Grove, Placentia and Brea. These comprise the Fullerton Junior College District.
In the early days of Fullerton, the public school was located in the second story of the Grimshaw building on east Commonwealth avenue. Bonds were voted in the amount of $10,000.00 to build a school house large enough, a two-story brick, to take care of the educational needs of the town for many, many years, or so we thought.
In Thompson & West's History of Los Angeles County, published in 1880, says of the the schools of Anaheim, "The town of Anaheim boasts of the handsomest school building and the largest school in the county outside of Los Angeles city." In 1877 Prof. J. M. Guinn, drafted a bill authorizing the district to issue bonds to the amount of $10,000.00. It became a law March 12, 1878. The bonds were sold at par and the school building, costing over $10,000.00 was built out of the proceeds. This was one of the first, if not the first, instance in the state of incorporating and bonding a school district to secure funds to build a school house. "The school house and grounds cost $13,000.00. It is of frame, two stories high, with projections, giving a frontage on all four sides. The extreme dimensions are, sixty-two by seventy-two feet on the ground; forty-two feet from the ground to the main cornice; fifty-three feet to the cresting of the main roof, and seventy-five feet six inches to that of the tower."
"The interior of the building is divided into four compartments,
miscellaneous and juvenile." There are ages of five and seventeen were about 350 children between years, in the district.
A former pupil of this school informed the writer that in the high school, among the studies taught, were Natural Philosophy, Algebra, Geometry, Botany, Physiology, Zoology and Bookkeeping.
It might be interesting to compare the prices received from the sale of real estate in 1893 as reported in that issue of the Gazette. Here is one in Fullerton: J. M. Loveland & Josephine Loveland to Edward E. Beazley, Lot 19, block 23, Fullerton, $25.00.
Stearns Ranchos Co. to E. M. Johnson, NE¼ of NW¼ Sec. 2, T5, R 10. $10.00. E. M. Johnson & Casa Johnson to Robert Greenleaf, same property $2,500.00.
Stearns Ranchos Co. to P. A. Stanton, N½ of SW¼, Sec. 19, T4 R10, agreement to convey $3750.00.

We, who were residents of this part of the county united and worked to defeat the project. The writer was a member of the election board in Fullerton and, as I remember, there were very few any votes cast in its favor in Fullerton precinct. The rest of Northern County voted the same way and the Santa Ana County supported high school project was defeated.
In order to prevent a recurrence of the County High School idea with another election, some of the leading citizens of Fullerton in cooperation with others in adjoinning school districts, united in forming the "Fullerton Union High Scholo District" in northern Orange County. The districts forming this "Union" as I recall, were Anaheim, Garden Grove, Glacentia, Olinda, Brea, La Habra, Buena Park and Fullerton.
In the original Union high school district there are now high house. "The school house and grounds cost $13,000.00.
