FIRST CHURCH CHRIST, SCIENTIST No. Philadelphia and Chartres Sts. BIBLE COMMENT FOR JUNE 13 It Takes Courage, Mercy and Love To Stand for God WHAT does it mean to stand for God? We may find the answer in asking for what God Himself stands. Consider the revelation of God as it is recorded in the scriptures of the Old and New Testaments. The revelation of God was first as Creator. Jesus summed it up and gave to it richer and fuller meaning when He said, "My Father worketh hitherto, and I work." To stand for God is to be a worker and not a slacker. God, the Creator, is righteous. What does it mean to be righteous? What does it mean in building to have sound and honest foundations, to have things plumb and true, according to the square and the plumb-line? That's what it means to be righteous in character and actions. And God is the embodiment, the true and complete pattern of righteousness. To stand for God is to be upright and true, with no crookedness, falseness or dishonesty in one's life or thought. But righeousness is not enough. A just man may be harsh and cruel, if he acts from justice alone, with no pity or compassion for human weakness and error. God is merciful and "full of compassion." So, the man who stands for God will be merciful as well as just. But if justice must be tempered with mercy, mercy must likewise be tempered with justice. Otherwise it might become weak and compromising with evil. Mercy is not enough. It is only love, which rebukes evil, that can be enough. So, the God, who is Creator, righteous, and merciful, is revealed in His highest character as a God of Love, with His pur- HARRY C. The man who stands for God will be a man of love. All this it means to stand for God. There are times of crisis when it does require daring and courage to stand for God. When unrighteousness, violence and hatred have the upper hand, it requires courage to be true to one's self and to one's God. Mrs. Campbell Dies Saturday Fire Chief R. CHRISTIAN SCIENCE The Golden Text of the Sunday Lesson-Sermon on "God the Preserver of Man" in all branches of The Mother Church. The First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Boston, is chosen from Numbers: "The Lord bless thee, and keep thee: the Lord make his face shine upon thee, and be gracious unto thee; the Lord lift up his countenance upon thee, and give thee peace." A Bible passage from Nehemiah reads, "Thou art the Lord the God, who didst choose Abram, and broughtest him forth out of Ur of the Chaldees, . . . And didst see the affliction of our fathers in Egypt, and heardest their cry by the Red sea; . . . And thou didst divide the sea before them, . . . Moreover thou leddest them . . . to give them light in the way wherein they should go . . . Thou gavest also thy good spirit to instruct them, and withheldest not thy manna from their mouth, and gavest them water for their thirst. Yea, forty years didst thou sustain them in the wilderness, so that they lacked nothing." In "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" Mary Baker Eddy writes, "The history of our country, like all history, illustrates the might of Mind, and shows human power to be proportionate to its embodiment of right thinking." "The despotic tendencies, inherent in mortal mind and always germinating in new forms of tyranny, must be rooted out through the action of the divine Mind." California has approximately 1,200 miles of coast line, nearly one-tenth of the nation's total. Ex-Actor Browne Heads Christian Science Church Elected Monday as president of the First Church of Christ, Scientist—the Mother Church—was Harry C. Browne, former actor and radio executive. Browne called for “spiritual efficiency” as a key to peace. Speaking before thousands of Christian Scientists from all parts of the world at the annual meeting in Boston, he said: “With the problem of world peace confronting us, these same divine qualities applied in individual thought and action will be found as potent and as powerful as they were in Jesus’ time.” A native of North Adams, Boston, Browne succeeds Mrs. Helen Chaffee Elwell of East Hebron, New Hampshire. Following service in the Spanish American War, he became interested in the theater, toured the United States and Canada for 25 years and later was production director and announcer for the Columbia Broadcasting System. In 1931, Browne gave up this position to devote his time to Christian Science. Previously he was a member of the Board of Lectureship and official speaker for radio programs, serving as a reader. The general fund cash excess over current obligations on April 30, was $178,910,932, a decrease of $1,438,980 under the excess of March 31, according to a report made by State Controller Thomas H. Kuchel. Retail Sales and Use taxes continued to be the leading revenue source, producing $221,100,945 during the first ten months of the fiscal year, or $29,583,975 more than the comparable period last year. Bank and Corporation Franchise and Income taxes brought in $61,077,276 for an increase of $8,434,177, and insurance companies taxes also showed a gain of $3,140,676. Although personal income tax was third on the list of revenue producers with an income of $39,821,776, Kuchel said that this figure was $1,744,125 below that of one year ago. Decreases of $5,797,327 in liquor taxes and licenses; $5,348,904 in motor vehicle transportation tax; and $3,877,454 in motor vehicle license fees were largely due to legislation passed in 1947 providing that these revenues no longer be deposited in the general fund. Apportionments for elementary schools, high schools and junior colleges for the ten-month period amounted to $136,311,232, an increase of 71 per cent over the preceding period, according to controller Kuchel's report. The University of California received cent, and under a new per cent age was expended for building aid. Aid to needy aged incarperations were $119,922 increase of 45 per cent due period of the report.
