Arlington Raw Sewage Leaks Into Santa Ana River, Says Local Paper Raw sewage is finding its way through seepage and breaks in the Arlington sewer line, into the Santa Ana river which is the source of supply of much of the domestic water in Orange county, according to the Arlington Times which has made a recent investigation. According to the Times, a 14-year-old boy who went wading in the Santa Ana river a short distance below the Arlington sewer farm recently came down with typhoid fever. After reporting that the Riverside sewer system seemed to be functioning properly, a report by the Riverside county board of health gave this result of its inspection of the Arlington sewer line and settling ponds, as reported in the Times: "The Arlington sewer farm consists of ponds where raw sewage is held for evaporation by air and percolation into the soil. These ponds are separated by earthen dikes, and approximately" (a month ago) "one of these broke allowing nearly all the raw sewage being held to escape into the Santa Ana river." "The sewage line from Arlington to the sewer farm is very old and patched and while following the route we found that where this line crosses the overflow irrigation from Hole Lake, the sewer line was broken and sewage is now reaching and flowing into the Santa Ana river." The Times continues: "The Arlington Times made an on-the-spot investigation of its own with the idea that a personal survey sewage disposal systems and plants. "Here are some of our findings: 1. The ponds in which the raw untreated sewage flows are open to mosquitoes, etc. There was some evidence of the grass at the sides of some of the ponds having been sprayed with oil, however. 2. One pond was only forty feet from the Santa Ana river. 3. Raw, untreated sewage was leaking through one of the dikes and flowing into the Riverside sewage treatment plant's chlorinated effluent which is used for irrigation. Perhaps the irrigator who uses the overflow will be interested in knowing this. 4. The Arlington sewer line is broken in several places and is flowing into the overflow irrigation from Hole Lake and into the Santa Ana river. 5. There was no effort being made to chlorinate the sewage being held in the ponds (at the time of the investigation). 6. There was much evidence near the Santa Ana river that one of the dikes had broken and had been repaired. 7. At the time of our investigation the raw sewage was flowing directly into the last pond, the other ponds having been filled. "The city engineer's office is responsible for maintenance of the Arlington sewer farm—and it is obvious from investigation that the farm is not being properly maintained and that as a result untreated sewage is entering the Santa Ana river." "The sewage line from Arlington to the sewer farm is very old and patched and while following the route we found that where this line crosses the overflow irrigation from Hole Lake, the sewer line was broken and sewage is now reaching and flowing into the Santa Ana river." The Times continues: "The Arlington Times made an on-the-spot investigation of its own with the idea that a personal survey would be more revealing than a report on paper. It was. "On our tour of the Arlington sewer farm we were accompanied by a city official who was as surprised as we were at the conditions there, and an individual who can be termed an expert on" "7.
