boundless sea; and when he finally reached this continent he believed that he had reached the Indies and when he saw the natives, he called them Indians.
Neither Columbus nor the earlier Vikings “discovered” America. It had been discovered and occupied hundreds of years prior to the arrival of these European explorers.
The question as to who they were and how they got here has always been a moot question. Incas, Aztecs, Mayans, etc., and although these different groups who differed in language, habits and appearance, it seems to the writer, that the Asiatic theory of their origin is the most logical.
The American Indians, like the Mongolians, have long, lank straight black hair of round section, sparse beard, moderately dark coppery skin, but without slanting eyes. In stature they are Caucasian. Language agglutinative, the words of which often become very long, stating an incident or idea, that in our language would take a long and possibly involved sentence to express.
There are certain characteristics however, which serve to distinguish the American Indian languages from the languages of other races. In this connection, Dr. Trueman Michelson has said,—“I do not know of a single feature that may be said to be characteristic of all American languages. Even so, a combination of certain features is quite sufficient to determine whether any given language is an American Indian language or not.
It is this which enables us to without any hesitation, that Chieke, Koryak and Yukaghur, who is spoken in northeastern Asia, Americanoid languages. If they were spoken in America, would call them American Indian languages.”
From a volume along this by Dr. Cronise, published in 1855 in regard to Indian and Chinese languages, he states: “In 1855 gentleman named Henley, a Chinese scholar, who acted interpreter in the courts of state for some time, published list of words in the Chinese Indian languages to show they were of the same origin.

The early settlers of Oregon found the remains of a Chinese junk, imbedded in the mud on Columbia river, several miles from the coast. The Indians had a tradition about this junk,—it came “filled with strange matter” many years previously but body knew whence they came where they went.
In 1813 the British brig Ford bound from London to the Columbia river, fell in with a dismantled Japanese junk of about 700 burden, about 150 miles off coast near Queen Charlotte land. There were three person board of her alive, who said had been 18 months drifting about, during which time she had been in sight of the American continent, but were driven out of the winds and currents. In another Japanese junk drifted the harbor of the Hawaiian lands; four of the crew were after being at sea 11 months.
These instances of Chinese Japanese vessels reaching coast so recently, is certain proof that they may have so in earlier times, as both China and Japan had large fleets vessels in the early days.
It is certainly in this way sible, that these Chinese and Japanese may have helped populate the western slopes of the American continent. There is no inability even in the Malay Southeastern Asia, extending by step, to the Polynesia Island and among them and beyond till the shores of the new world finally received the impregnation their footsteps and of their characteristics. We may very likely recognize not proofs, but variations along the shores of America, that its original purpose if any, constituted such a store were increased by it.
As respects the possible connections of America on side towards Europe, there
