Secretary Growers Urge Big Scale Research On Crop Marketing (Continued from page 1) for a major change in policy of the organization, it was pointed out, and unless a strong grower support is obtained the objectives implied in the letter might not be attained. Since the growers gathered at the Farm Bureau hall last week included members of several marketing organizations, some selling independently, but a great majority in cooperatives, there was hesitation in endorsing a letter which asked the California Fruit Growers Exchange to carry out a specific program. The meeting met this difficulty by endorsing the principles expressed in the letter by applying its suggestions to the industry as a whole. There was discussion at the meeting as to whether the fruit going into juice should be processed near the consuming public or in California and shipped to the midwest and east in frozen form. It was finally decided that this was one of the questions that administration of the venture, it was disclosed. The meeting met this difficulty by endorsing the principles expressed in the letter by applying its suggestions to the industry as a whole. There was discussion at the meeting as to whether the fruit going into juice should be processed near the consuming public or in California and shipped to the midwest and east in frozen form. It was finally decided that this was one of the questions that should be decided by research. During the discussion it was declared that juice processed in California and instantly frozen could be delivered to the eastern consumer with all the color and flavor of fresh juice. Meantime Hart's Fruit Products company with a new plant at Brea last week shipped its first car of frozen "fresh" orange juice to a New Jersey dairy which will distribute it to consumers as it does its milk and milk products. But the frozen orange juice business has not yet attained great magnitude in California. One Anaheim citrus fruit processor said that under any process yet known to him the cost of freezing the product was too high and the difficulty of handling it in retail outlets was too great to make it profitable to handle. He said he believed it would be possible eventually to sell California oranges in the form of fresh juice to eastern consumers but that it would take a huge sum of money for research and a long time to develop a profitable business from the results of the research. In addition, Mennes will serve as the Hollywood artist representative and negotiate contracts with available stars and featured players. Life becomes calmer with a new, do-everything laundry machine in the house! But before you invest in one of these wonder-washers—be sure you have the kind of hot-water supply it must have to work properly.
