Seems that Mr. Gregg along with Paul Weaver and Barney Stoeffel decided last weekend to go to Palo Verde to do a little duck hunting, in fact four days of it. Finding the feathery friends too wary, the group had gone to town and engaged in conversation, one of the town characters, a barber who had lived in that vicinity for a number of years and who was planning on moving away in the near future. Well, in the course of the conversation, said barber very cautiously mentioned a certain spot, not disclosing its location, where catfish was the finest in those parts and where the supply seemed unlimited. Their curiosity aroused, they asked him to reveal this fishing paradise but he refused. After much persuasion, he finally accepted five dollars to take them to the secret spot, with the statement, “I'm moving away from here real soon and I'm not going to keep it a secret any longer.” With high hopes, the three men, said Gregg, Weaver and Stoeffel, spent almost twenty-four hours a day for a day and half but NO, 'nary a fish did they get—no fish and NO five dollars. Returning to their duck hunting, they finally managed to bring home enough evidence to prove to their friends they had REALLY been hunting—and not fishing. Propose New Simpler Rules For Fishing Sweeping revisions and simplification of California sport fishing regulations, including two May trout season openings for the entire state, are among proposals of the Division of Fish and Game to be presented to the Fish and Game Commission at their January 9 and 10 meeting in San Francisco. Advocating a May 1-October 31 trout season for 16 southern California counties and a May 31 opening in northern California, Division Executive Officer Emil J. N. Ott, Jr. will also ask the commission to open certain areas to year-round black bass and spiny-rayed fishing to relieve pressure on trout waters. Ott said the proposed regulations “mean less confusion, better understanding, better conservation, better enforcement, and fuller use of angling resources.” The commission will hear opinions of sport fishermen at their San Francisco meeting before setting the 1948 regulations January 30 and 31 in Los Angeles. In letters to sportsmen's groups, the Division's Bureau of Fish Conservation outlined in advance the detailed proposals. They include: Elimination of the use of districts as a basis of angling regulations in inland waters; Limiting the taking of salmon and steelhead to three in the aggregate in the northern part of the state generally; and a bag limit of two in most southern waters; A continued year-round striped bass season, but with a 25-pound and one fish limit. For smaller bass, the five-fish limit would continue as well as the 12-inch... Lawson, Fullerton, vice-president; Orville Woods, of Fullerton, treasurer, and Marjorie Bergeron of Anaheim, secretary. Plans for a Lincoln Day celebration were discussed, and a committee was appointed to make the necessary arrangements with Ted Lawson chosen as the chairman. The group hopes to have Senator William Knowland as speaker. The chapter unanimously adopted a resolution endorsing Joe Lieb, Jr., as candidate for state president of the Young Republicans of California. It was announced that the state convention will be held in San Francisco during the second week in April. A telegram was received Wednesday evening, Dec. 7, by Joe Lieb, Jr., from the president of the California state group of Young Republicans, Frank Stacey, recognizing him as president of the chartered chapter of the Young Republicans of Orange county. their consent and who may resign at any time they may wish, short of a national emergency.
