THE FLAG "Washed in the blood of the brave and the blooming, Snatched from the altars of insolent foes; Burning with star fires, but never consuming Flash its broad ribbons of lily and rose. Borne on the deluge of old usurpations, Drifted our Ark o'er the desolate seas Bearing the rainbow of Hope to the nations, Torn from the storm cloud and flung to the breeze. God bless the flag and its loyal defenders While its broad folds o'er the battle field wave; Till the dim star wreath rekindle its splendors Washed from its stains by the blood of the brave." —Author Unknown. WHY IS A FLAG AND WHAT IS ITS WORTH? We may take a piece of white cloth, about twice as long as its width, rectangular in shape. It may not be very large or of much intrinsic value. Its value might not be sufficient even to be laid away in the archives of our Lodge as a memento; yet, take that piece of white cloth, color one fourth of its surface blue, separate the remainder into thirteen strips; take enough of these strips to make thirteen five pointed stars, fasten these on the field of blue; attach the strips of cloth, seven of them crimson, the remainder still white. Suppose Betsy Ross had done this in 1776, soon after the death of her husband, slain on the field of battle, January of that year, and this lodge had it. What would be its value? What had been done to make it so priceless? In 1867, a citizen of the United States took a trip to Cuba, then as you all know under the dominion of Spain. For some reason he was suspected of being a spy and was arrested, tried and condemned to death on the following day. By some means the American Consul was informed of his countryman's plight and after seeing him and talking with him was convinced of his innocence. The consul went before the Spanish tribunal to try and secure the release of an innocent man; but was informed that their prisoner had been tried, convicted and condemned by due process under Spanish procedure and nothing could be changed and the sentence would be carried out the following morning. There was not time for diplomatic intervention. The following morning the prisoner was taken to the place of execution, an open grave was there and a coffin beside it. He was blindfolded, the firing squad was taking position, when the American consul together with the English consul arrived and disregarding the Spanish executioners, rushed to the prisoner and wrapped an American flag round his body; the English consul did the same with his country's flag. They then told the Spanish officer to order those fired on at his peril. The Spaniards did not dare to touch, much less fire upon the prisoner. The American consul took his countryman in charge and under his protection and with no further molestation, he was returned safe home and women in that country, seizing great souls and daunting courage, who demanded still greater freedom of thought and action and emigrated to this then world to secure it. They endured hardships unnumbered, perils yond comprehension in subduing the wilderness to which they come; and, when on top of these hardships, stringent were placed upon them, their dom curtailed, burdensome they levied and to top it all, they were given no voice in their government. The old spirit that had commenced the granting of the Man Charta again burst forth stronger than before. The desire for a liberty became so strong, that few hardy, undaunted, unconquerable souls met and forfeiting lives in so doing, declared, that all men were created free and equal. That no true governor could exist without the consent of the governed. Force was used to subdue these rebels to the extent of a despotic king, a war was an emblem was needed and Betsy Ross, the young widow furnished it in 1776 and the Continental Congress adopted it June 14, 1800. John Ross gave his life for a good principle and flags were made. Betsy Ross, from the dresses of Betsy Ross, from the dresses of Colonial dames at that time to perpetuate the principle of the sacrifice. So what could be more fitting than that the flag designed should have broad bands of crimson though dyed in the blood so lightly shed by those patriots, they sturdy pioneers, who deemed proper price to pay for Liberty and Freedom. Crimson, a badge of courage. What more fitting than bands of white, representing the purity of the lives those Colonial women who fished the material, a true relic. DO YOU OPERATE UNDER A FICTITIOUS FIRM NAME Consul arrived and disregarding the Spanish executioners, rushed to the prisoner and wrapped an American flag round his body; the English consul did the same with his country's flag. They then told the Spanish officer to order those fired on at his peril. The Spaniards did not dare to touch, much less fire upon the prisoner. The American consul took his countryman in charge and under his protection and with no further molestation, he was returned safe home again. He had been wrapped in two different pieces of colored cloth, but they were emblems of the irresistible, unconquerable power and strength of the two mightiest nations of the world. I have used this incident of these two flags for a purpose. I believe them to be closely related as emblems of freedom. What value could the freed American place upon those two pieces of cloth? HOW DID OUR FLAG ORIGINATE? I believe the idea of freedom and liberty for which it stands, started at Runnymede, England, June 19, 1215, over 700 years ago, when the Barons wrested from King John the great Magna Charta. This gave to the barons and through them to their tenants and dependents certain rights to life and property, that never before had been granted by any monarch. The freedom granted by this first great document was gradually increased, until, in time the document itself was repealed as not further needed. But notwithstanding the freedom given by the Magna Charta, there were men so much stronger than that the flag designed should have broad bands of crimson though dyed in the blood so easily shed by those patriots, that sturdy pioneers, who deemed proper price to pay for Liberty and Freedom. Crimson, a badge of courage. What more ting than bands of white, representing the purity of the lives those Colonial women who fished the material, a true representation of the color for the people which they worked, sacrificed and prayed. What could be more fitting than the blue field taken from the sky above, dotted with stars of hope for the peace, erty and freedom that should low when purchased with a blood shed for so great a principle; a guarantee of the purpose, which inspired them the power and the will do, not only for themselves but posterity. Think of the trials, suffer and blood shed by the follow of the immortal Washington, will always be revered by Masons of this country as the first and greatest grand man think of the skill and persistence of the great German military tyrician Baron Steuben, drilling undisciplined Continental soldier of Washington into a fight army. Lafayette, Benjamin Franklin; Valley Forge, culminating Yorktown. Think of the fewhewed timber from which ships were made that carried consecrated flag under Paul John Paul Jones and others. Lincoln in the great fratricial war saw it carried forward, terminated that for all time, country should remain one, visible and unseparable and working over a free country in as well as in name. Think of tietam, Vicksburg, Gettysburg, Wilderness. It seems to me from this great conflict, the colonist stripes took on a deeper through the comingling of blood of brothers fighting other, for what each believed be right and righteous; and we peace came with a re-establishment united people and a race free from the chains of slavery, though crimson was deeper yet the wounds was brighter, and the blue purer and the stars of Hope run numerous than in Contine days, beckoned and twinkled brighter, more effulgent bewaving over a free re-united tion. Operate Under A Fictitious Firm Name? If so, have you complied with the requirements of Section 2466 of the Civil Code, which says: "Every person and every partnership transactnig business ... under a fictitious firm name ... must file ... a certificate stating the name in full and the place of residence of such person and the members of such partnership. ... Such certificate must be published once a week for four consecutive weeks." If you have neglected this procedure, do you realize that the name of your firm is not protected, and that you are not entitled to maintain suits for collection, or other purposes, in the courts of the State of California? Take care of this important matter NOW by having the ANAHEIM GAZETTE publish the certificate. Come into the office—it takes only a few minutes to have the form filled out, and we will file the document for you. The cost is small, but the filing and publication is something which should not be overlooked. For the first time since the early days of the war, handsome patterns such as the one shown are now available, according to the United States Potters Association. American dinnerware provides the appropriate setting for that noble bird—the turkey. before; and when in the adjustments following and penalties assessed against the vanquished, this great country, demanding nothing from a beaten foe, the purity of peaceful purpose, represented by the shining white stripes, can never rightfully be questioned. What did that flag mean to the condemned man in Cuba in 1867? What value would he place upon it? What has it been worth to the numberless immigrants fleeing from the other countries of the earth to enjoy liberty, peace and prosperity under its stars and teachers in our schools and in every way possible undermine that which has been established at so great cost and sacrifice. Unconsciously, there are numerous good citizens, as they consider themselves, who abhor anarchy and all that the red flag stands for and yet, they themselves, may be helping to inculcate a disrespect in others as well as themselves and especially influencing the rising generation to disregard and disrespect, by nulifying and ridiculing laws and statutes with which they are not in sympathy. I behave their power scarce stood; then let us use our will to make them rife with like circlets on a lake ring beyond ring and new oh that our thoughts were ed so that they might go way. Another poet has "For humanity sweeps where today the martyr sings the morrow crouched Just the silver in his hands." The Martyr stands for principle. The silver stewed, selfishness. Now it upon us as individual actors posing the mass which covers this great nation, to stand and example for me perpetuate that which bears reared at so great sacrifice, nor permit it throw by letting our great selfishness rule our lives, ous great people and nations arisen with might and through greed, intemperate vice. This great nation can overthrown from without, individuals composing it live and act that their own and selfishness can cause it fall. Again, righteousness a nation but sin is a curses people. This institute is sponsors the YMCA and the American Cross for the purpose of swimming, safety in small and water sports in O What could be more fitting than the flag designed should have broad bands of crimson, as high dyed in the blood so free-ended by those patriots, those pioneers, who deemed it a higher price to pay for Liberty Freedom. Crimson, a true measure of courage. What more fit than bands of white, repressing the purity of the lives of Colonial women who furnish the material, a true repreation of the color for the peace which they worked, sacrificed and prayed. What could be more than the blue field taken up by the sky above, dotted with the hope for the peace, liberty and freedom that should follow when purchased with the shed for so great a princess a guarantee of the purity purpose, which inspired within the power and the will to not only for themselves but for security. It is the duty of all good citizens, and all good Masons are necessarily good citizens, jealously to guard and shield it from anything that might stain it. With what it stands for, with the life blood with which its crimson bars are dyed, with the treasure it has cost, with the hardships endured, the pain and toll suffered, with the prayers and sacrifices of the women of this great country for its preservation, with what it stands for and what it has accomplished, it would seem as if no one would seek mar or stain it. Such, however, is not the case. There are fanatical foes to good government, who, living under the protection of our starry flag, seek to tear it down and hoist in its stead a rag of red. They look upon Liberty as license and Freedom as passion unrestrained. They seek to overturn all good established government, all law. They and others work in dark and devious ways; insidiously they insert their perverted views in books of general circulation, in text books in our schools; under the guise of socialism seek to get their kind in positions as which has been established at so great cost and sacrifice. Unconsciously, there are numerous good citizens, as they consider themselves, who abhor anarchy and all that the red flag stands for and yet, they themselves, may be helping to inculcate a disrespect in others as well as themselves and especially influencing the rising generation to disregard and disrespect, by nultifying and ridiculing laws and statutes with which they are not in sympathy. I believe that those who wilfully and more or less openly break laws with which they are not in sympathy are a greater menace than the out and out anarchist. Laws can not be made that are just and equitable to each individual, but are made to secure the greatest good to the greatest number. Slavery was a curse and it was outlawed. Habit forming drugs are a curse and their sale is limited to their use under a doctor's prescription. There is a statement of fact in a good old book that we all revere. Righteousness exalteth a nation but sin is a curse to any people. Right exalts, elevates, error degrades. All masses are made up by a collection of separate atoms and the value depends upon the character of the atoms of which it is composed. Nations are made up or composed of individuals. You are a part of this nation, so am I. We may individually think that in gratifying our own individual selfish wishes we harm no one else and certainly not the entire nation. Theoretically when a pebble is tossed into the sea, the ripples started by it reach the fartherest shores touched by its waves and every individual atom touched is disturbed in its position and new relations are formed. "So with our thoughts, for good or ill they French Frying Can Be Easy Remember the last time you ate some wonderful French fried foods at a restaurant? Didn't you long to be able to duplicate them at home? You can duplicate them at home by using the same method that many famous hotels and restaurants use, dipping foods in a batter made from pancake ready-mix before deep frying. A batter dip of pancake ready-mix forms a protective coating over the food which prevents fat from soaking the food during frying. GENERAL BATTER DIP DIRECTIONS For seafoods or vegetables, combine 1 cup pancake ready-mix with ½ cup milk, 1 beaten egg and a dash of salt and pepper. Stir lightly. Dip seafood or vegetable in the batter and fry in hot deep fat, 370°F. until golden brown. For a fruit batter, combine 1 cup pancake ready-mix with ½ cup milk, 1 beaten egg and 1 tablespoon sugar. Stir lightly. Dip fruit in batter and fry in hot deep fat 370°F. until golden brown. French Fried Shrimp Peel raw shrimp; remove black vein, drain and salt well. Dip in batter and fry in hot deep fat about 2 minutes. French Fried Cauliflower Wash cauliflower and separate into flowers. Boil vigorously for 2 to 3 minutes in salted water. Drain. Dip each flower into batter. Fry in hot deep fat for 2 to 3 minutes. French Fried Eggplant Peel eggplant. Cut crosswise in ¼-inch slices. Cut each slice into pie-shaped wedges. Dip in batter. Fry in hot deep fat for 2½ to 3 minutes. French Fried Fruit Dip fruit (pineapple rings, half banana, apricots, peaches or apple slices) in fruit batter and fry in hot deep fat for 1 to 3 minutes. French Fried Onions Peel medium-sized Bermuda onions and slice crosswise in ¼-inch slices. Separate rings. Dip in batter and fry in hot deep fat for about 2 minutes, have their power scarce understood; then let us use our better will to make them rife with good; like circlets on a lake they go, bring beyond ring and never stay; oh that our thoughts were fashioned so that they might bless alway. Another poet has written, "For humanity sweeps onward, where today the martyr stands, on the morrow crouched Judas with the silver in his hands." The Martyr stands for right principle. The silver stands for greed, selfishness. Now it devolves upon us as individual atoms, composing the mass which constitutes this great nation, to make our stand and example for right and perpetuate that which our forebears reared at so great toil and sacrifice, nor permit its overthrow by letting our greed and selfishness rule our lives. Numerous great people and nations have risen with might and fallen through greed, intemperance and vice. This great nation cannot be overthrown from without, but the individuals composing it can so live and act that their own greed and selfishness can cause its downfall. Again, righteousness exalteth a nation but sin is a curse to any people.
