In the four exploratory trips the pair have collected most of the types found in the cloud forests and have seen them back where they are being experimental plots. On their most recent two explorers also California budwood trees in the widely known grove at the Hacienda near the home of Fuerte tree in Mexico of 40 acres is considered source of avocado the world. On their most recent trip the two explorers also sent back to California budwood from a dozen trees in the widely known Rodiles grove at the Hacienda San Diego near the home of the parent Fuerte tree in Mexico. This grove of 40 acres is considered the richest source of avocado seedlings in the world. The budwood sent to California was taken from trees which appeared to be hybrids of the Mexican and Guatemalan types and with some of the characteristics of the Fuerte. The hope is that from these seedlings may be produced a type of tree with Fuerte characteristics which will fruit at another time of year or which might even be a heavier producer. In discussing the avocado outlook Wallace Sullivan of the Agricultural Extension Service disclosed that California produces 75 per cent of the avocados consumed in the United States and that two-thirds of this total is consumed in California. The per capita consumption of avocados in the United States is under half a pound a year while in southern California it is eight pounds a year. If the territory served by the Chicago market alone, had the demand for avocados there is in the Los Angeles territory, he said, Chicago would consume the entire California production. With production still increasing in California Sullivan expects prices to fall until demand in the east and middle west can be created.
