Government To Give Farms To Lucky Veterans Veterans of World War II who are interested in homesteading have five opportunities to apply for farm units on public lands being opened for entry this year by the U. S. Bureau of Reclamation, Ben Lieberman, director of Veterans Affairs has announced. Of particular interest to veterans in California is the scheduled opening on or about October 1, of 46 irrigated farms in the Coppeck Bay area of Tule Lake in northeastern California. This area, comprising some 700 acres, is located near the section where 86 farm units were awarded to veterans last December. Veterans may request application blanks from the Bureau of Reclamation, Old Post Office building, Sacramento. Their names will be placed on a list and the forms mailed to them following the announcement date. Applications may be filed during a 90 day period following the opening, and the farm units will be awarded by means of a drawing among all qualified applicants. Liebermann explained that applicants must show a background of farming experience and sufficient cash resources to maintain themselves while getting a farm into production. The demand for the homesteads greatly exceeds the supply, since more than 1000 qualified veterans submitted application for the 86 farms previously awarded at Tule Lake. Applications are being received for farms in two areas in Wyoming, the Riverton and Shoshone projects. The bureau is planning to open areas in the Yuma and Gila projects in southwestern Arizona in the near future. Inquiries regarding these projects should be addressed to Bureau of Reclamation, Boulder City, Nevada. Army Pay Above National Average Men able to pass the rigid mental and physical tests required to join the U. S. Army and Air Forces today are really “getting a break” according to S/Sgt. Bailey, Army representative at 202½ W. Third street, Santa Ana. “Even the lowest paid service man,” Sergeant Bailey said, “actually has more real ‘take home’ pay than is earned by most civilian workers. National income figures show below $200 a month as the average wage earned. Our private soldiers earn equivalent to $211 a month.” “Veterans of any branch of the Armed Forces,” he said, “can enlist and be assigned directly to posts and air bases in the United States. Veterans can also enlist for service in Europe where they will be paid 20 percent more for foreign service.” Men with high school educations can select any one of 44 different trades and start their career in the Army Air Forces by going to an AAF school where they will learn the trade they have selected. J. Marks, secretary of the Orange County Farm Bureau. Mark's announcement was based on information received from H. H. Jaqueth, chief of the local allocation division of the State Department of Finance, who said his office is negotiating for the purchase of surplus military buildings at 10 encampments. According to Jaqueth, the buildings which he expects to make available to farmers are located at Camp Elliott, near San Diego; San Pedro; Camp Cooke, near Lompoc; Camp Roberts, near Paso Robles; Hammer Field, near Fresno; Minter Field, near Bakersfield; Stockton; Camp Beale, near Marysville; and Camp Kohler, near Sacramento. Some at El Centro are being sold now. The State Department of Finance, in taking over the farm housing functions of the Farm Production Council, has a $500,000 revolving fund to finance purchases of groups of buildings from federal agencies for resale to farmers. Marks urged farmers who are interested in securing this type of farm housing to obtain application forms from the local farm labor placement office or from the county farm advisor. These forms establish the farmers for purchase at the site of buildings for farm housing. Featherly, executive secretary of the Veterans Organizations, has been appointed as a reemployment committeeman for this area to represent the U. S. Department of Labor in safeguarding the reemployment rights guaranteed to veterans by the Selective Service Act. Featherly explained that this function formerly was exercised by local Selective Service Boards, but was turned over to the Department of Labor in connection with liquidation of the Selective Service System. Under the new plan of operation, veterans who are unable to get their jobs back upon release from military service should first contact a local office of the California State Employment Service. A member of the employment office staff, usually the Veterans' Employment Representative, then will confer with the employer in an effort to persuade him to reinstate the veteran to his former position. Failing in this, the Employment Service will refer the case to Featherly's office for further ac- revolving fund to finance purchases of groups of buildings from federal agencies for resale to farmers. The husky ex-policeman, who tips the scales at approximately 300 pounds, packed his prize all by himself, from dawn to dusk, traversing the former hunting grounds of the fierce Modoc In-dians, afoot. Heeding reports of good black-tail deer hunting in the Feather river country north of Sacramento, were Dap Pannler, Arch and John Henry, Spence Alcott, Gene Hilton, Newt Miller, Bob Fowler and Octave Roquet, all of Anaheim. Lawrence Allec, assisted by his father, Paul Allec, took a 170-pound deer in the Santa Rosa mountains, west of Palm Springs, last weekend.
