Aksel Oas Family Back From Plane Trip to Former Home in Norway
“It’s great to be an American abroad,” reflected Aksel Oas who has just returned from an airplane trip with Mrs. Oas and their daughter, Miss Emilie Oas, to their old home in Norway. “But,” he added, “it’s greater to be at home.”
For Mr. and Mrs. Oas it was a first visit to their homeland in 24 years, but Miss Oas had been in Norway as a supervisor of entertainment for the Red Cross during World War II.
Oas was full of enthusiasm for air travel. “It’s the finest way to travel there is,” he declared. “It’s as far ahead of crossing the ocean by ship as the automobile is ahead of the horse and buggy for travel on land.”
The crossing on the way from United States to Oslo on an American Airlines ship was the 14,836th ocean crossing for a ship of that line. Food was good and abundant and the service was warmly courteous.
“Conditions in Norway were far better than I had expected,” said Oas, discussing the trip. “Food is rationed but there is enough of all essentials to eat. They haven’t as many clothes as we have in this country but people managed to look neat. Although there is price control in the country there was talk of the high cost of living.
“But there wasn’t a strike in the country while we were there. This is due to a voluntary truce made between management and labor. When a dispute arises it is settled by a labor court set up to work during the truce and without a change in the law of the nearby Kristiansund, Nansos, Leianger, Narvik, Bodo and Aandalsnes, as a result of fighting early in the war, not a church, not a store or bank or library and almost no private dwellings were left standing. But few houses or other structures are being rebuilt. All available labor is being used in the manufacture of things for export.”
“So you wouldn’t want to go back there to live?” a friend asked. “I wouldn’t want to live there the year around,” said the well known machine shop operator, “but I wouldn’t mind trying it out there in the summers—with nothing to do,” he replied.
Oas said he was loaded down to the Americans for benefits they have received during and since the war.

Corresponding secretary of the Theta Nu Theta sorority is Frances Plou of Anaheim.
Theta member from this city is Jean Ernwine. Kappas from Anaheim include Velda Clark, Charlene Walker, Gloria Knudsen, Violet Marcell and Evelyn Bevins.
