Phone Company Asks Additional Rate Increase The Pacific Telephone and Telegraph company has calculated that it didn't ask for a large enough increase in its rates last February and has filed an amendment with the state Public Utilities commission. Under the amended schedule Anaheim business individual service would be increased $2.25 over the present monthly rate of $4.75; business two-party line service would be increased $1.75 from the present rate of $4; residence two-party and four-party line service now $2.75 and $2.25 respectively would be increased Storage Life of Avocados, Lemons Greatly Lengthened by Vapor Contamination The storage life of a Fuerte avocado can be doubled or even tripled by decreasing the oxygen content of the atmosphere of the storage room and increasing the carbon dioxide concentration. The storage life of a lemon can be greatly prolonged by keeping the atmosphere in which it is stored free of the gas generated by a mouldy lemon. These are some of the facts disclosed by a series of studies during the past seven years and reported this week by H. B. Biale, assistant professor of subtropical horticulture and assistant plant dioxide and the development color is often accompanied by shedding of "buttons" and deterioration. Gas eminating from a moldy lemon can produce effects on 500 sound fruit. A hopeful aspect of the integration was the discovery that destructive vapors can be abated from the atmosphere in lemons are stored by passing the air through a solution of mine. Intrastate long distance rates would be increased chiefly by making the minimum rate 10 cents instead of the present minimum of 5 cents and increasing the initial period day station-to-station rates generally by 5 cents for distances from 30 to 140 miles and by certain other "adjustments." President Mark R. Sullivan of the telephone company said the recent wage increase granted employees absorbed all of the increased revenue produced by the interim increase granted the company in June and left the company earnings at "the lowest point in years—lower than even the worst years of the depression and totally inadequate to ensure obtaining the millions of dollars of new capital needed to provide the telephone facilities required by the public." Latin America's primavera tree is both beautiful and useful; its yellow flowers provide the beauty and its wood is used for interior trim and in furniture as a substitute for bleached or blond manogany. About 515 million cans of United States fruit and vegetables were produced in the 1946 season, about double that of the 1939 season. These are some of the facts disclosed by a series of studies during the past seven years and reported this week by H. B. Biale, assistant professor of subtropical horticulture and assistant plant physiologist in the Experiment Station, Los Angeles. In the case of avocados Prof. Biale found a striking relationship between respiration and ripening. When a sample of fruit is placed at a constant temperature and under a constant rate of ventilation, Prof. Biale reported, its rate of production of carbon dioxide first drops to a minimum, then increases sharply to a maximum, followed by a marked decrease in respiratory activity. Fruit softening was found to be closely associated with this trend in respiration. It never occurred prior to the peak, but always followed it. From the nature of the carbon dioxide curve it was possible to predict the date on which the avocado would be most suitable for consumption. The behavior of citrus fruits in storage was found to be markedly different from that of avocados. With lemons no measurable quantities of active vapors were noticed as long as the fruit was sound. The occurrence of even a slight amount of mold altered the picture decidedly. The effects of the common green mold was found most pronounced. The gaseous product of this rot increased the rate of respiration and hastened the color development of sound green lemons. At a storage temperature of 59 degrees the production of carbon dioxide is commonly 100 per cent higher than in fruit stored in air free of these vapors. Availability of Colorado river water to the district areas this summer has saved a number of communities from suffering a serious water shortage, Mr. Hinds pointed out. Hot weather during July resulted in new all-time peaks in water deliveries to southern California cities, and the maximum daily delivery of Colorado river water during July to district areas was 29 per cent greater than the maximum daily delivery last July, he stated. In fact, the demand for softened Colorado river water is straining the present capacity of the Metropolitan Water District's softening and filtration plant, and construction of a new unit that will double the plant's capacity is now being rushed forward, Hinds stated. Three cities in the District are using softened Colorado river water exclusively, it was shown. These are Santa Monica, Santa Ana, and Laguna Beach. Pasadena is taking one-half its water from the aqueduct, Long Beach more than one-third, and Beverly Hills about one-half. Other district cities using the aqueduct water are Los Angeles, Glendale, Burbank, Torrance, Compton, Anaheim, and Fullerton. A reported statement of Professor Fritz W. Wents of the California Institute of Technology, concerning the chemical content of the softened Colorado River 4-H Champion At State Fair The Junior Division at the California State Fair in mento, August 28 through September 7, is attracting a large number of exhibits in the livestock division with $18,000 in prizes being offered. Smith, new president of the International Association of Barbecue Clubs, will be the guest of honor at a Spanish barbecue to be given August 30 by the Coastal Lions Club at Doheny Park. Included in the program will ceremonials marking the beginning of construction of a Youth Center to serve the communities of San Juan Capistrano, San Clemente, Dana Point and Capistrano Beach. President Smith's party is expected to include District Governor Frank Shufelt of Seal Beach, District Governor Glen Atkinson of Upland and others. Joey Carrillo, in whose absence Spanish barbecue is quite offbeat, will be master of ceremonies. The day's program $3000 gifts will be distributed, acting to announcements. The Youth Center will be dedicated to the young people of the communities served by the City. It will be built on club property at Doheny Park and it all represents three years of training and effort by Coastline teams. The barbecue to which the pubs invited, will be prepared by hosts who are descendants of operations of barbecue experts. Will be served on grounds just 1001 highway south of Doheny postoffice. Oquet Wins Angling Honors Top angling honors went to Oct. 25 Roquet during the Izaak Leon's charter boat trip Tuesday. The 23 fishermen left King's Angling, Newport Beach, on the same sports craft, "Happy Land" for the 12-mile banks off Ana, and Laguna Beach. Wents of the California Institute of Technology, concerning the chemical content of the softened Colorado River water, was challenged by Mr. Hinds. In an article appearing in Tuesday's paper, Professor Wents is reported to have indicated that the softening process increases the salts in the water delivered to consumers," said Mr. Hinds. "This is definitely not true. The softening process used by the Metropolitan Water District does not increase the salts in the water. Furthermore, we need not peer into Professor Wents's test tubes to find out how the softened aqueduct water affects plant growth. Santa Monica has been using this softened water exclusively since June 1941—more than six years—and Santa Monica is recognized by all to be a city of beautiful trees, plants, and lawns. Most everyone in southern California has visited Boulder City, Nevada, headquarters town for Hoover Dam. Where this model community now stands was, prior to 1931, a barren desert wasteland. Today it is a paradise of luxuriant trees, shrubs, and lawns. For 16 years these trees, shrubs, flowers, and lawns have been irrigated with softened Colorado River water of the same characteristics as the softened water delivered by the Metropolitan Water District. It would seem that the best proof of the effects of this water is found in the results of its actual use. "It should also be kept in mind that the softened water is not and never was designed primarily as an irrigation water. It would be foolish to go to the expense of softening water just for irrigation use. It is primarily water for domestic and industrial use, and for these purposes it is being successfully used." Use of Colorado River aqueduct water is scheduled to be markedly increased late this fall when deliveries are scheduled to start to San Diego. A delivery line to that city is now nearing completion. GETTING TOUCH Recent moves by our State Department in the are obviously designed to convince Stalin that as long calls the political tune in such countries we are not pay the piper for him. The cancellation of the $7 million credit to Hungry purchase of cotton and the exclusion of Poland from $332 million American relief program has hit Russia—where it hurts most. There is also a report on $25 million in lend-lease still due Russia will never get but will probably wind up in Greece and Turkey. As far as the people of the Balkans are concerned too bad that we must deny them aid which they undo need. But as long as they are governed by Russian governments which frequently use our supplies to strife their own political position we simply cannot afford continue playing the part of the sucker.
