P.M.A. AND THE FARMER
SLIGHT INCREASE FORECAST IN CORN PRODUCTION
An increase in estimated 1947 corn production . . . 158 million bushels or about 6 percent above the July 1 crop report . . . is indicated in a special mid-month report by the Crop Reporting Board.
The special report as of July 15 covers the 12 important corn states where good corn weather causing concern. Undersecretary of Agriculture N.E.Dodd told the American Society of Agricultural Engineers at Chicago recent that "soft corn, high in moisture content, low in feeding value, and of poor keeping quality is probable this fall.
"We will need every kernel of this corn crop that we can possibly save," Dodd said . . . "people born here and abroad are vitally concerned about the poor condition of our corn crop." He pointed out that the needs of hungry people in Europe and Asia and increased consumption here at home may inadequate our prewar corn production.
To attack the problem of handling high-moisture corn, farmers should be encouraged now to make plans and place their order for equipment they will need. Dodd told the engineers. Agricultural workers in states and counties should canvass equipment needs so that manufacturers and local suppliers will have supplies available.
The situation promises to critical and calls for an all-out effort, he concluded. "Unless farmers, professional workers, and equipment manufacturers exert full energy in getting this done it will mean increased suffering abroad and increased shortage of livestock products here."
POTATO PRICE SUPPORT SET
Support prices for the late crop of potatoes have been set.
For Orange county they vary from month to month, ranging from $2.45 per hundred pounds for July to $3.25 for January 19th and the remainder of the market.

SLIGHT INCREASE FORECAST IN CORN PRODUCTION
An incresae in estimated 1947 corn production . . . 158 million bushels or about 6 percent above the July 1 crop report . . . is indicated in a special mid-month report by the Crop Reporting Board.
The special report as of July 15 covers the 12 important corn states where good corn weather with adequate moisture and warm days and nights was experienced the first two weeks of the month. However, an unseasonal cold snap in the third week of July retarded crop growth in the weather-plagued Midwest.
National production of corn is now forecast at 2,770,930,000 bushels, compared with 2,612,809,000 estimated on July 1. The crop as now estimated is some 500 million bushels less than the 1946 record crop of 3.2 billion bushels. The current forecast is about 100 million bushels above the 1936-45 average.

POTATO PRICE SUPPORT SET
Support prices for the late crop of potatoes have been set.
For Orange county they vary from month to month, ranging from $2.45 per hundred pounds for July to $3.25 for January 1947 and the remainder of the marketing season.
These prices are for U. S. No potatoes, sacked and loaded in cobs or trucklots at country shipping points. They are somewhat higher than those of previous years because of higher storage costs and to assure farmers average support price of 90 percent of the July parity.
Complete details can be obtained from the county agricultural conservation committee.
MEAT SUPPLIES EQUAL TO LAST YEAR'S
Consumers can look forward as large a supply of meat this year as last when supplies were vast above most war years; according to the Bureau of Agricultural Economics.
Meat supplies per person in 1946 averaged 153 pounds; compared with 134 pounds in 1937.
While total meat output in first quarter of 1947 was modestly less than a year earlier; greater production in the second quarter brought supplies for six months to about the same level as 1946.
Meat production probably will be larger this summer than 1946. If the cattle slaughter continues unusually large, meat output may be almost as large as fall as a year earlier. Red pork, lamb, and mutton production was about offset by increased beef and veal production.
Record or near-record consumer incomes in June created a strong domestic demand for meat. Price for meat animals in mid-June erased 2 percent below the Maize record but 47 percent above year earlier; when price ceilings were in effect.
The prospective record slaughter of cattle and calves for I will result in a sharp reduction numbers on farms. Cattle feed in 1948 probably will be below high rate of the current year; a result, beef and veal output expected to be reduced in 1948.

UNRRA EUROPEAN PROGRAM CLOSES
By the close of its operation June 30 for those in Europe—United Nations Relief and Habilitation Administration have delivered nearly three billion dollars' worth of supplies to different countries. This is about three times the value of provided after World War II volume, the shipments amounting to 25 million long tons, the last peacetime shipping operation in world history.
The bulk of the supplies been food to meet immediate needs, but about one billion dollars went to help rehabilitate internal economics of war-countries which lacked the reign exchange resources to their own import requirements. To make some start toward proved food production, about million dollars was spent for a cultural equipment—seed, fertilizer, agricultural implement draft animals, tractors.
Public expressions of gratitude for UNRRA aid have been relied upon.
Undersecretary of Agriculture N.E. Dodd told the American Society of Agricultural Workers at Chicago recently soft corn, high in moisture, low in feeding value, and keeping quality is probably fall.
We will need every kernel of corn crop that we can possibly Dodd said... "people both abroad are vitally concerned about the poor condition of corn crop." He pointed out the needs of hungry people Europe and Asia and increased adoption here at home make our prewar corn problem.

Situation promises to be made and calls for an all-out conclusion. "Unless the jobs, professional workers, and intent manufacturers exert energy in getting this job it will mean increased suffragette and increased short-lived stock products here at

WORLD FATS, OILS
OUTPUT INCREASES
World production of fats, oils, and oilseeds harvested in 1946 amounted to about 17.7 million short tons oil content, about 5 percent above the 1945 output, but 20 percent below the 1935-39 average.
The increase in supplies available for consumption results from the further recovery of the copra output in the Philippines and the Netherlands Indies, the successful Antarctic whaling season, and the increased olive-oil supply in the Mediterranean area from the good harvest last fall. However, 1946 production in each group of fats and oils, except animal fats, increased over that of the previous year.
SCHOOL PROGRAM FEEDS
GERMAN CHILDREN
Around 8½ million German children are receiving a supplemental "meal" through the Military Government's School Feeding Program, reports William C. Ockey, Associate Director of the Production and Marketing Administration's Food Distribution Programs Branch. Ockey has just returned from a 90-day trip to Germany, where he helped set up the program in American and British occupied zones.
According to Ockey, "sufficient food was made available to feed porridge, or another similar item, and contains approximately 350 calories per serving.
"This supplemental food, which is served ration free to the children, has been a great benefit to them even in the short time in which the program has been operating. It started in a few schools on April 14, and by June 21 the entire quota of 3,550,000 children received the meal. Teachers have said that after six to eight weeks they noticed definite improvement in attentiveness, ability to learn, and increased weight."
