Rev. Monahon, New Free Methodist Minister
New minister of the Free Methodist church of Anaheim is Rev. A. R. Monahon, formerly of the Santa Ana Free Methodist pastorate. With Mrs. Monahon he resides at the church manse, 215 West Broadway.
Worship topic Sunday morning at 10:45 o'clock will be "The Church." The regular evangelistic evening worship period will be at 7 o'clock Sunday, he disclosed.
A special "get-together" is planned for all church and Sunday school members and friends Friday afternoon. Meeting at the manse, the group will enjoy a barbecue and a variety of games in Hillcrest Park, Fullerton.
Well known in church circles, Rev. Monahon worked several years in the Pittsburg, Pa., conference where he served as secretary for three of those years. For a number of years he was active in evangelistic work throughout the country.
Rev. James B. Abbott, former pastor of the church here, has been transferred to the Free Methodist church in Monrovia.
Plan Music For White Temple
Special music is being planned for the morning and evening services at White Temple Methodist church this Sunday, it was announced by the Rev. Ronald Dunham, recently appointed pastor.
A tenor and bass duet, "The King of Love My Shepherd Is" by Shelley, will be sung by D. Lyman Harpster and Fred Edwards during the regular 10:50 o'clock morning worship. Rev. Dunham's sermon topic will be "The Hope of the Future."
Community singing will be led by Raymond Holt during the 7:15 o'clock evening worship period. Warren Ashleigh will present a tenor solo. "A New Home" is the subject to be discussed by Rev. Dunham.
CRIPPLED CHILDREN ENJOY NEWPORT BEACH
Sunburn, sand and smiles were equally apparent when 25 youngsters from Casa Colina, convalescent home for crippled children in Chino, spent Friday at Newport Beach playing in the sand and splashing in the surf. Residents of this vicinity viewed the caravan of two station wagons and three cars, which was escorted to and from the vacation resort by State Highway Patrolman George R. Reinjohn. Salvation Army Sets Date For 'Salvage Week'
Organization of the A committee for the "Salvage campaign of the Salvation Social Service Department" announced this week by Renner, general chairman drive, scheduled for the September 21 to 27. The intensified drive for salvage materials will be directed by assisted by Mel Gauer, Earl Woodward, civic club P. G. Neumann, church Wilkinson, fraternal organ and Margaret S. Wright licity.

Salvation Army Sets Date For 'Salvage Week'
Organization of the Anaheim committee for the "Salvage Week" campaign of the Salvation Army Social Service Department was announced this week by O. H. Kenner, general chairman of the drive, scheduled for the week of September 21 to 27. The annual intensified drive for salvage materials will be directed by Renner, assisted by Mel Gauer, schools; Earl Woodward, civic clubs; Rev. P. G. Neumann, churches; Del Wilkinson, fraternal organizations, and Margaret S. Wright, publicity.
The new annex to the social service center dedicated last Easter, provides greatly increased facilities in the public interest. The rehabilitation of men through useful work, is the aim of this self-stustaining division of the Salvation Army. The program is unique in that no cash donations are solicited. The only public request is for materials usually thrown away. The salvage is reconditioned and then sold to the needy of Anaheim at a price they can afford.
Last year the center serving this district reprocessed 192,272 garments, 18,298 pairs of shoes, 10,812 pieces of furniture and 100,092 pieces of other household equipment. The sale of these goods enabled the center to provide a home, food, work and financial remuneration for an average of 85 persons per day.

County's Retail Sales in 1946
Top $150 Million
Orange county's retail establishments enjoyed the greatest dollar volume of trade in their history during 1946, when $150,759,000 rang up on cash registers, according to estimates of the research department, California State Chamber of Commerce.
The county's retail sales total last year represents a gain of 32.5 per cent over the 1945 sales of $113,812,000, the State Chamber declares, and 200.8 per cent above the 1939 volume of $50,112,000.
Statewide, California's total retail sales volume in 1946 was $8,984,075,000. This was 30.7 per cent above the 1945 level, and 181.8 per cent over the 1939 total sales mark.
Food stores enjoyed a large share of Orange county's 1946 retail sales volume, with a total of $39,667,000. The general merchandise store classification had sales of $13,878,000 last year.
Dollar volume of sales for other Orange county retail classifications in 1946 include: Apparel stores, $10,847,000; drug stores, $6,028,000; household furnishings stores, $8,726,000; building material, hardware and farm implement stores, $9,679,000.

Slate ‘Telephone Hour’ Programs
Four varied concerts are scheduled for the pleasure of music lovers on this month’s Telephone Hour broadcasts each Monday evening at 8 o'clock over NBC network, it was disclosed by R. J. Rossberg, local manager of The Pacific Telephone and Telegraph Company.
Guest soloists are Ezio Pinza, Maggie Teyte, Blanche Thebom and Zino Francescatti. Conductor Donald Voorhees and the 57-piece Bell Symphonic orchestra will present special selections as well as accompaniment for the artists.
Pinza, famous Metropolitan basso, was heard Monday. Next week, in a repeat performance, Miss Teyte, petite English soprano, will interpret Malotte's “The Lord's Prayer” among other selections.
A distinguished violinist, Francescatti, will make his first appearance on the program August 25. Among other numbers he will play Ravel’s “Tzigane.”
J. C. KRATZ IMPROVES AFTER SERIOUS ILLNESS
J. C. Kratz, well known real estate man of this city, is now improving and able to sit up after a serious illness. His daughter, Mrs. Gladys Witherell of Chicago, who spent two and one-half weeks here with him left Anaheim last Friday for her Illinois home. He was in the Fullerton hospital one week. Kratz resides with his wife at the Angelina hotel on East Center street.
JOHN SALAZAR TO ATTEND SANTA MONICA WEDDING
John Salazar of Anaheim, recently discharged Army pilot, will be best man for the wedding of Johnny Valenzuela of Santa Ana and Miss Mary Castillo of Santa Monica in the Catholic church of that city, next Saturday. Salazar served as a first lieutenant during World War II.

Beauty Contest To Open In Los Angeles Saturday
Attractive high school girls from throughout southern California will compete in the "Miss 1957" annual beauty contest to be held again this year beginning Saturday. Roving news photographers will photograph promising subjects in downtown Los Angeles stores Saturday.
From the camera studies, ten finalists will be selected to compete on the stage of the Philharmonic Auditorium, as a feature of the big free "Back to School" show next Thursday afternoon at 1:30 o'clock, for the title of "Miss 1957." Awards will include a trophy, a free charm and modeling course and many other honors. Runners-up will be given smaller trophies and a number may be singled out for stage, screen or modeling careers.
Film beautician, Perc Westmore, Dorothy Preble, model groomer, and Joan Castagana, last year's 14-year-old winner, will act as judges.
Those with professional training or modeling or previous winners may not compete it was announced. Selection of the "most popular" school-age twins, professional entertainment, awards to youth organization winners and a fashion show of "Back-to-School" apparel will be included on the program. The Downtown Business Men's Association is sponsoring the free show.

will give effective control of flies for sixty to ninety days depending upon air temperatures and exposure to sunlight. It is best applied with a power sprayer having positive agitation to avoid settling out. Avoid spraying the DDT solution on feed and wash feed troughs after spraying.
