He played on the university baseball team and in his last year was team captain. He was active in student affairs and was a member of the exclusive Golden Bear society. For a time he worked in his father's electric power plant and then took law course in U.C., was admitted to the bar and entered the law office of Gibson, Dunn & Crutchfield in Los Angeles. In 1914 he was married to Miss Rose Wineberger of Seattle. Their first home was in Anaheim but subsequently they moved to Whittier, their present home, while Lewis has his law office in Los Angeles. He was initiated into Anaheim Elks lodge in 1919 and was elected its Exalted Ruler in 1924. Subsequently he served the order as district deputy Grand Exalted Ruler for the California South district, president of the State Elks association and member of the judiciary committee of the Grand Lodge. Opening his address, Lewis thanked those present for "a wonderful and sincere reception." He spoke of the order of Elks as a democratic group that would help preserve democracy for the 140,000,000 Americans regardless of race, color or creed. He enumerated Elk projects, including care for crippled children, its polio fund, its sponsorship of Boy Scouts and its program for rehabilitation and its services to hospitalized veterans. In a reminiscing mood, he recalled some memorable incidents of his boyhood and recalled vividly the 1945 jubilee celebrating the 75th anniversary of the founding of Anaheim. A considerable part of the huge audience remained to shake the hand of the nation’s chief Elk. Illinois was the first state in the Union to ratify the Woman’s Suffrage amendment to the Constitution. A Navy spokesman at the base said that the removal will begin Aug. 1, to the Lakehurst, N. J. lighter-than-air base. Later, Rep. John Phillips said in Washington that the navy plans to end all operations at the base by the first of the year and assign various schools to other bases. The first move will be made in easy stages and take about two weeks. Station personnel and the utility squadron will keep the base open for the time being. The property and buildings include two of the largest hangars in the world and hundreds of smaller buildings. The land was obtained from the Irvine company when the base was created and the quadron activated in 1942. From a high wartime total, the complement of men has dropped to 100 officers, 500 enlisted men and 200 civilian employees. From the first blimp, the total grew to 14, and now has dwindled to six. Anti-submarine patrols and coastal defense was the main mission of the Santa Ana station. Study Chicks For Exact Needs Of Amino Acids Study of exact requirements of chicks for each of the 20 or more amino acids will be continued by University of California College of Agriculture poultrymen under a $2,000 grant from Swift and company, Chicago meat packers. The project will be directed by Dr. C. R. Grau, poultry nutrition specialist, who has been working on the problem for several years. In earlier work, 17 feeds were tested as sources of some of the amino acids, and methods were developed to make the tests faster and more accurately. This year's work will be devoted to studying these feeds as sources of the remaining amino acids. Swift and company has supported this long-term project since 1942. NEED REGISTERED NURSE FOR GIRL SCOUT CAMP An urgent request is being made by the Anaheim Girl Scout headquarters for a registered nurse to attend the August 11 to 21 camp period at Camp Conifer, Arrow Bear, Calif. Any nurse interested may contact the scout office, 200 South Citron street, phone 4889 or call Mrs. William Bushman, camp chairman, Anaheim 2665. One Protest To Assessment Is Allowed When it concluded its duties as a board of equalization last weekend the county board of supervisors had heard 19 petitions for revision—downward—of assessed valuations placed on properties in the county, and had allowed just one. That one was recommended by County Assessor Maurice Enderle's office. Former Supervisor N. E. West of Laguna Beach was the "lucky" one. He got more than $300 chopped off the valuation set on his Las Ondas Cafe property at Laguna Beach, which the assessor's office had valued at $25,500 but which admittedly was a mistake. As accepted the county's assessment roll reached an all-time high of $344,475,975. This was an increase of $84,812,100 over last year's total. Not only did the assessment roll total more than ever before in the county's history, but the increase over last year was far more than the increase in any 12 months' period. The increase from 1945 to 1946 was $9,000,000. Bean Growers To See Effects Of Wireworm Control Bean growers and others interested in observing effects of the use of different chemicals in the control of wireworms are invited to a field meeting scheduled for 10:30 a.m., Thursday, July 31, said W. M. Cory, assistant farm advisor. The plots are located one-half mile east of the Greenville bean warehouse on Talbert road. Six different chemicals have been used in the test to observe their relative efficiency in the control of wireworms. After these plots have been observed, a second plot located nearby having four different strains of "potato type" lima beans will be visited. These are being tested for yield and desirability for quick freezing. A third point of interest for the growers of beans for quick freezing will be an opportunity to see a portable bean viner in action on the Stephen Griset place.
