JACK PA ENJOY VACATION TRIP Mr. and Mrs. Jack Payne Tourists Spend Half Billion In Southland in Year During the last 12 months’ period for which statistics are available, out-of-state motor tourists did enough driving inside southern California to total 2301 trips to the moon! Or, practically speaking, according to the All-Year Club, which today released the results of a survey into tourist spendings, they drove a total of 550,000,000 miles. This does not include mileage of the trip from and back to their homes. “To do this, they bought a total of 44,000,000 gallons of gasoline in southern California,” explained Don Thomas, managing director of the community tourist promotion organization. “This, in turn, was enough to keep over 600 of our service stations and all their employees profitably busy doing nothing else but fill up tourists’ gas tanks. “And the gasoline tax from these tourist sales amounted to $1,320,682, which is a sizeable tax load thus lifted from the shoulders of local residents. “The $6,647,433 which these visitors spent on their gasoline purchases was just a small slice of the money they brought into our economy here,” he explained. “They bought food, shelter, clothes, drugs, haircuts, gifts, and everything else it takes to live, for a grand total of $509,000,000 of spending during the last year. The impact of this half a billion dollars of ‘imported’ money has had much to do with keeping our business level high.” Anaheim merchants offer the greatest in values! Ag. Economist Sees Deep Drop In Farm Income Net farm income per acre will drop sharply in the next 10 to 20 years because prices paid for crops will fall faster than costs of production. That’s the economic prediction of James M. Tinley, farm economist in the University of California College of Agriculture. “We are reasonably sure that prices of all farm products will fall during the next few years,” Tinley said. “The question is, how far?” A drop of 33 per cent in prices, wfth only 20 per cent lower costs, is quite possible, he believes. Experience early in the depression of the ’30’s proved that prices fall faster than costs, Tinley explained. Between 1930 and 1933, gross income on Wisconsin dairy farms dropped 55 percent. Cash expenses fell off only 44 per cent. Net income slumped 64 per cent. The same general picture—a larger drop in net income than in gross income—was also true of hog-beef fattening farms—and wheat-corn-fatstock farms. “These figures show clearly that when prices fall, gross income drops faster than expenses. The result is that net income is reduced even more than gross income,” Tinley said.
