Mr. and Mrs. John Q. Publisher could put away a lot more food than they are now doing, according to recent statistics.
Commenting on the nation's growing appetite, Secretary R. Agriculture Anderson reported recently that "people want about 40 pounds more meat per capita than they were getting between 1937-41.
"They want 200 pounds more milk per person, about nine pounds more chicken, 23 or 24 pounds more fresh vegetables around 17 pounds more processed vegetables, an additional eighty pounds more of other fruit."
This trend is indicated by our food consumption level last year — 16 percent above prewar.
But this 16 percent increase, the Secretary explains, doesn't concern close to what consumers really want. It indicates that Mr. and Mrs. General Public would like to be able to buy a third more food than they had on the average five prewar years.
"THIS, OUR LAND"
This, our land, has a multifacial and varied character.

D.M.A. AND THE FARMER
S. PURCHASEMENTS OFFERED ON HEAT CROP
The purchase agreements and credit loans will be available to farmers on their 1947 wheat program under the USDA's price test program, it has been announced.
The program says the departure is expected to simplify the farm for farmers, and to reduce administrative costs.
Purchase agreements will be made by growers through December 1947. Under these agreements farmers will be able to sell to Commodity Credit Corporation at a price corresponding to delivery rates. Farmers expect to sell any quantity of wheat to CCC during the period following April 30, the maturity date of wheat.
Rates on the 1947-crop will be based on 90 percent as of July 1, 1947. These rates also reflect freight and handling charges. Only wheat No. 3 or better, or No. 4 or 5 because of test weight will be eligible for loan or use. In general, the loan program will operate the same as in support programs.
1,905,000,000 acres, says the USDA.
Of this space, three-fourths of the land is used to grow the food and raise the livestock which keeps us alive. Cropland, pasture and grazing land add up to nearly 1,500,000,000 acres. Besides there are about 260,000,000 acres in forests used mostly for producing lumber, pulpwood, and fuel wood.
Thus crops, pastures and timber take about 1,700,000,000 acres, 90 percent of the nation's land area.
Of the other ten percent, about 94,000,000 consists of deserts, rocky areas, swamps and the like. This portion of the land holds some of the nation's mineral and oil deposits.
In addition, about 87,000,000 acres are used primarily for recreation and travel, made up of parks, game refuges, railroads, highways, farmsteads, military lands and similar tracts.
And finally, there are about 13,000,000 acres in cities and towns.
NATIONAL FARM SAFETY WEEK JULY 20-26
Unless we take precautions to cut down on our accident toll, 1947 will again, as in past years, take a grim and tragic toll of farm residents.
"Cold statistics show that barring a drastic reversal of our statistics on the subject, every hour of this year will be darkened by accidents and death on the farm," said Roy L. Hale, chairman Orange County Agricultural Conservation Association.
"This very hour, two farm persons will die, victims of farm accidents."
"Two hundred and five persons living on farms will suffer injuries."
To focus attention on the appalling loss of life and income from farm accidents the President
HOW'S THAT AGAIN? — Dee Turnell shapes up as one of the gorgeous pin-up girls in the hilarious Groucho Marx musical comedy, "Copacabana," released through United Artists. Farmers Offered Chance to Buy Surplus Housing
Prefabricated buildings, formerly used in the war effort, can be purchased by California farmers through the Orange County Farm Bureau, it was announced this week by Assistant Secretary Robert Hobbs.
The buildings are of wooden construction, 16 by 16, panelized and repaired, and will be delivered to California by rail, ready to erect.
The structures, especially adaptable for farm workers, were made available to the California Farm Bureau Federation by the California Farm Production Council. The buildings are now located in Louisiana.
Loan rates in California are 63 cents per bushel on stored on farms and in countryshouses; rates vary by state. Oats must grade No. 3 or better to be eligible for loan purchase. USDA BUYING CALIFORNIA POTATOES
322 cars of California early crop potatoes have been purchased since mid-May according to E. H. Spoor, state PMA (formerly AAA) director.
These purchases have been made under the USDA's 1947 potato price support program in order to assure growers support prices in accordance with the "Steagall Amendment."
Purchases have been diverted to dehydrators for processing into dehydrated potatoes, to schools and institutions, and to outlets for sun drying into livestock feed. 280 of these cars, according to Spoor, have gone to dehydrators where they have been processed for overseas shipment for human consumption.
Purchases to date has been confined to the San Joaquin valley.
WORLD WOOL SUPPLIES LARGE DESPIITE LOWER PRODUCTION
Despite a world wool production lower in 1947 than in any year since 1935, supplies—accumulated in wool-producing countries during the war—will remain unusually large, according to the Department of Agriculture.
World production in 1947 is estimated to be 2 percent less than in 1946 and 7 percent less than the 1936-40 average. World stocks on July 1, 1947, are estimated to be 4.5 billion pounds compared with 5 billion pounds a year earlier.

The structures, especially adaptable for farm workers, were made available to the California Farm Bureau Federation by the California Farm Production Council. The buildings are now located in Louisiana, ready for shipment upon orders to California.
Each building has six windows, each with eight lights, one 4 panel door and one screen door, and two shutters. The structures are shipped in ten 8-foot easy-to-erect sections.
Hobbs said the current offer and price are made to all farmers with no restrictions as to the use of the building. A full description of the structures, together with photographs, is available at the Orange County Farm Bureau office, Orange.
To protect the purchaser, the Farm Bureau offers an inspection service at the site so as to insure that only acceptable buildings are shipped.

Consumption of domestic wool during the first three months of this year was at an annual rate of 366 million pounds. This compares with a consumption of 241 million pounds in 1946. The current consumption rate indicates that domestic stocks may be lowered slightly during the year, since 1947 production is now estimated at 315 million pounds. This is about 10 percent less than 1946 domestic production.
The Commodity Credit Corporation support program on wool ended on April 15. Average prices received by farmers for wool were 3.5 cents lower in May than a year earlier. Reductions up to 4 cents were general in the 11 western states and Texas but in Ohio, a major wool state, prices were the same as last year.
ALABAMA MAKES CONSERVATION PROGRESS
The construction of 382 million feet of terraces to control run-off on 770,000 acres of land is part of Alabama's nine year conservation record under the Agricultural Conservation Program. The figures are from a recent report on ACP accomplishments, by A. W. Jones, state production and marketing Administration director.

It's called IPC, a line-bred cousin of 2,4-D. It kills quackgrass and other weed grasses, by acting through the roots. IPC is most effective when applied to the soil instead of the leaves. It doesn't seem to harm beets and other broadleaf plants.
2,4-D, on the other hand, kills dandelions, plantain, and other broadleaf weeds, but has no effect on quackgrass and its many relatives.
Scientists warn that IPC may interfere with useful grasses if the soil is dry.
SUGAR POLICY STARTED
There are no present plans for asking Congress for legislation, similar to the Sugar Control Extension Act, beyond the present October 31 deadline on price and ration controls, and beyond March 31, 1948 on inventory controls, James H. Marshall, director of the Sugar Branch, recently told a group in New York.
Marshall also stated that the rumor concerning decontrol of industrial sugar rationing or present increase in industrial percentage rations is false. Under the present law, individual consumers must be assured of 50 pounds of sugar per capita before industrial rates may be increased.
Present outlook does not present a picture of scarcity in 1948 severe enough to warrant government purchase of 1948 sugar crops, specifically of Cuba and Puerto Rico, Director Marshall said.
