Differentials between cattle vary somewhat from those of the 1948 crop. On that crop mal differentials were exceeded some instances in order to late production of certain beans. The differentials nounced today reflect only small relationships. Prices will be supported means of (1) price support agreements with growers, loans to growers on warehouses and farm stored beans, and price supporting agreements with dealers in areas where agreements shall be deemed necessary. BACKGROUND INFORMATION Farmers reported in March their intentions to plant 1,884 acres to 1947-crop dry beans. This would be approximately 11 percent greater than the 1946 acreage, and with age yields of the last five years would produce 16.3 million tons of 100 pounds each of uncured beans. The 1946 production was 15.8 million bags. No forecast can be made what 90 percent of parity on will be as of August 15, 1947; date on which the support will be determined for the crop. As of August 15, 1947 percent of the parity price beans was $6.19 per 100 pounds As of April 15, 1947, it was THE POTATO STORY BROUGHT UP TO DATE Nearly ten million bushels the nation's history-making FOR SALE CANARIES—Good singers, also color bred. 520 No. Vine, Phone 4517. Differentials between classes vary somewhat from those for 1946 crop. On that crop norm differentials were exceeded in the instances in order to stimulate production of certain types of beans. The differentials announced today reflect only normal relationships. Prices will be supported by bills of (1) price supporting agreements with growers, (2) bills to growers on warehouse farms stored beans, and (3) supporting agreements with farmers in areas where these agreements shall be deemed necessary. BACKGROUND INFORMATION Farmers reported in March that intentions to plant 1,889,000 bushels to 1947-crop dry edible beans. This would be approximately 11 percent greater than 1946 acreage, and with averages yields of the last five years would produce 16.3 million bags of 100 pounds each of uncleaned beans. The 1946 production was about nine million bags. Forecast can be made of that 90 percent of parity on beans be as of August 15, 1947, the date on which the support prices be determined for the 1947 crop. As of August 15, 1946, 90 percent of the parity price on beans was $6.19 per 100 pounds of April 15, 1947, it was $6.98. THE POTATO STORY DOUGHT UP TO DATE Nearly ten million bushels of nation's history-making 1946 books. A new form, however, SRA Form R-218 is now in use. This combines OPA Forms R-146 and R-194. Letters requesting new ration books or replacements of mutilated ones must contain applicant's name and address, says the SRA; statement to the effect that applicant is an infant, or a person discharged from the armed services; or that the ration book has been mutilated. These should be sent to SRA Branch Office at 1208 Santee street, Los Angeles, 15. "TAKING CARE OF THE SOIL AMOUNTS TO TAKING CARE OF LIFE" About two dollars per year...that is what the Agricultural Conservation Program, on an average, costs each one of us. For this amount we insure ourselves against a shortage of food. That is how Dave Davidson, assistant administrator for production, PMA, regards the per capita cost. "As for the tremendous profit realized on this small investment," he says, "That is impossible to arrive at." "Taking care of the soil amounts to taking care of life itself, and who can estimate the cost of life?" As a sample of how the program builds up national health, Davidson takes one practice under ACP, the spreading of lime and phosphate. The calcium provided by lime, along with phosphate, builds good bones and strong teeth. Animals as well as man need calcium to stay alive. If there is not enough available calcium in the soil, we don't get this calcium from the JUSTICE IN GERMANY The job of bringing German industrialists to justice is not receiving the headlines that similar action against the top Nazi war criminals did. But it is going steadily ahead. The recent indictment of 24 members of the huge I. G. Farben combine is a part of that activity. If found guilty they may be sentenced to death. Brigadier General Telford Taylor, who presented the indictments, declared, "In a very real sense, these defendants and others like them—not the half-mad Nazl fanatics and the street-fighting thugs—are the principal war criminals. "What is more important," he went on, "these defendants will, if their guilt is unexposed and unpunished, be an immeasurably greater threat to the future peace of the world than would Hitler if he were alive today." In prosecuting the German industrialists the Allies have set a precedent. Heretofore the men who created the weapons of war and sought to enrich themselves in the process have invariably gone free. Of course, these industrialists have not yet been convicted. And there can be little doubt that they and their friends in other countries, including our own, will do all they can through political pressure to gain an acquittal, or, at the worst, light punishment. The American public should follow the trial closely. If the evidence presented shows conclusively that they are guilty their penalties must be in line with those handed out to the Nazi leaders. THE POTATO STORY DROUGHT UP TO DATE Nearly ten million bushels of the nation's history-making 1946 potato crop have been shipped to load under the USDA potato short program. Reviewing the program, the department points out that in addition to supplying sorely needed food for hunger-ridden nations, the program provided an outlet approximately 10 percent of the year's potato surplus. The surplus spuds were bought by the department under the manny price support program. Under this program, they were made available for foreign governments or UNRRA for relief relief, and for shipment by the army to occupation zones at a ten price of 4 cents per hundredweight at country shipping points. Comparable arrangements were made for commercial distribution through private exporters at a price of 50 to 55 cents hundredweight at country shipping points. Here are the uses to which the potatoes were put: Five million eight hundred twenty four thousand bushels are re-sold to the Army for seed in the occupied zone of Germany. This made it possible for the German potato growers to release for sale use a like amount they had need for seed. Other shipments were principally to Belgium, France, Italy, Portugal, Spain and Yugoslavia. Smaller shipments found their way to Albania, China, Korea and Japan. While the potatoes under the short program were made available immediately upon harvesting in the foreign countries, it was until spring, says the department, that there were appreciable exports made. When the potatoes were first offered, the foreign countries still had enough for their own use, and preferred to receive available funds for grain. In the spring, deliveries ran to three hundred cars a day, high as three to four hundred miles a day during the short time who can estimate the cost of life?" As a sample of how the program builds up national health, Davidson takes one practice under ACP, the spreading of lime and phosphate. The calcium provided by lime, along with phosphate, builds good bones and strong teeth. Animals as well as man need calcium to stay alive. If there is not enough available calcium in the soil, we don't get this calcium from the food grown in that soil. It is unlikely, says Mr. Davidson, that any of us get as much calcium as we need. More than three times as much lime is being put on the land annually as was applied prior to the Agricultural Conservation Program in 1938, he says: in the case of phosphate, the use has increased 12-fold. And yet, Davidson stresses, even so our estimated need for lime is more than twice what we're actually getting on the land, and for phosphates, eight times as much! BILLION BUSHELS OF WINTER WHEAT! With nature in a beaming mood, the winter wheat crop is pushing production figures upward to an estimated 1,025,789,000 bushels, according to the U.S.D.A.'s Crop Reporting Board. This would shatter all previous records, 17 percent over last year's high of 874,-000,000 bushels. The 54,294,000 acres of winter wheat remaining for harvest tops last year's acreage by 12 percent and the 10-year average by a third doubt that they and their friends in other countries, including our own, will do all they can through political pressure to gain an acquittal, or, at the worst, light punishment. The American public should follow the trial closely. If the evidence presented shows conclusively that they are guilty their penalties must be in line with those handed out to the Nazi leaders. NOT TOO CERTAIN Last month when the British blew up Nazi fortifications on Helgoland they seemed completely satisfied that the island could never again be militarily useful to the Germans. Maybe they're right. Certainly, the 7500 tons of explosives used on the island had a most devastating effect as photographs show. But in matters of warfare the "impossible" is commonplace, and it is our guess that if the Germans ever regained military power they'd find considerable use for Helgoland. At least, the British shouldn't write it off entirely as a potential factor if there should be another war involving Germany. and is the largest since 1919. The prospective yield of 18.9 bushels would be the third highest on record, and compares with 18 bushels last year. Acreage abandonment is indicated at 4.6 per cent, only about one third of average.
