Native Sons Again to Hear Former 'Mounty' Sydney Montague, formerly of the Northwest Mounted Police and well known in Orange county for his appearances on the Fullerton Forum, will address members of Mother Colony Parlor, Native Sons of the Golden West and guests at the organization's fourth annual birthday dinner celebration, honoring Frank Salveson of Fullerton, past president, Tuesday evening, May 6, at 6:30 o'clock in the Anaheim Elks club, according to President Henry Plou of Anaheim. Montague, who addressed the Natives upon a similar occasion last year, was invited by popular request again to be the speaker this year. Upon return this week from an extensive lecture tour of the east coast he notified officers of the parlor that he would be happy to accept the invitation and was making special arrangements in order to be present. Several Grand Officers of the Order are expected to be in attendance. They will include Grand First Vice President Walter H. Odemar of Los Angeles, Grand Inside Sentinel Walter Hishey of Santa Ana, Bernard G. Hiss of Los Angeles, Walter Richards of Wilmington, David W. Stuart and Judge Donald Van Luven of San Francisco. The vote, March 11, on the Treasury Appropriation bill, which contained the money for the Bureau of Customs, was 387 to 0. The House, with only 48 members absent or not voting, and without a single nay vote, approved the bill. The Director of the Bureau of Customs, Mr. W. R. Johnson, started a campaign of false propaganda. Some pretty prominent people and newspapers, whose faces should be a little red by now, were drawn in. Let me quote from the letter written to Mr. Johnson by Mr. William Jennings Bryan, Jr., Collector of Customs for Los Angeles, under date of March 26th. "Dear Bill:" began Mr. Bryan, "We have your letter ordering a reduction in force and it is being carried out with promptness and dispatch." You bet it was; without attempting to find out why it should be considered necessary under a bill whose reduction followed known recommendations of the Attorney General. "Out here," continued Mr. Bryan, "we got busy at once with the press and foreign trade and shipping groups, who are doing everything possible to bring pressure" to bear upon Congress." "The World Trade Section," continued Mr. Bryan, "of the Chamber of Commerce alone has sent out 1,700 letters to its members, and most of them are writing in." If I knew how to put a bronx cheer into type, I'd do it. Pfc. L. W. Rains Now In Japan Private Lawrence W. Rains, son of George L. Rains of Route 1, Box 114, Anaheim, is serving as a member of the headquarters and service group of General Douglas MacArthur's headquarters in Tokyo, Japan, it was announced by GHQ Special News Service this week. Bearing the distinction of being an honor guard for General MacArthur, Pfc. Rains is stationed at the Dai Ichi building, downtown Tokyo, and has sentry duty at his official residence in the American Embassy. Following his graduation from Anaheim Union high school in June 1946, Pfc. Rains enlisted in the United States Army in September of 1946 at Camp Beale, California. He took basic training in the Armoured Division at Fort Knox, Kentucky. At Camp Stoneman, California, he was processed for overseas duty. He left via troop transport February 14 this year from San Francisco harbor and docked March 6. Last Rites for Hannah Potillo Funeral services for Hannah Potillo, 77, were held at 3:30 o'clock Wednesday afternoon at McAulay and Suters chapel, Fullerton. A native of that city, she died Monday morning at the family ranch home on Orangethorpe avenue. She is survived by a niece, Mrs. Humbert Scatena of Garden Grove road; three sisters, Mrs. Isaac Barman of Fullerton, Mrs. Mary Clark and Mrs. Susie Hawm, both of Los Angeles, and one brother, Morris Smith of Los Angeles. Attorney General. "Out here," continued Mr. Bryan, "we got busy at once with the press and foreign trade and shipping groups, who are doing everything possible to bring pressure to bear upon Congress." "The World Trade Section," continued Mr. Bryan, "of the Chamber of Commerce alone has sent out 1,700 letters to its members, and most of them are writing in." If I knew how to put a bronx cheer into type, I'd do it here, dedicated to the Chamber of Commerce Foreign Trade Committee, whose members individually seemed to have more caution; practically no letters were received in Washington. "We are also getting good support from narcotic groups," added Mr. Bryan, "and a good break with the local press." (The Bureau of Narcotics is a separate bureau, with its own appropriation, increased in this budget). "All the papers are running articles and pictures. I personally, have written to seven members of the Senate committee, whom I know personally, and am likewise writing Congress. The Attorney General, Fred W. Houser, has also made a statement to the press." I'm surprised Fred; you've been in the Assembly, and in Los Angeles politics and you ought to know how the machinery works; besides Mr. Bryan should know by now how to spell your name!
