Vocal entertainment for evening will be interpreted by Mrs. Hazel Evans. "Happy Hay Day" Cole and his "Little Hay Days" of Buena Park 4-H club give a resume of their cur-proect. Farm Center members their friends are invited to of heavy warfare, mechanized equipment, and the obvious desire to get victory quickly, no matter what the cost, brought the debt to about $250. It may have been nearer $240. Either way it seems small compared with the debt left us by World War II. The per capita debt, as the result of World War II, reached an alltime, fantastic high of over $2,000. Every man, every woman, every boy or girl in school, every baby, would have owed that much of the government's debt, if it had been divided among all of us. Even that new granddaughter your Congressman has in Banning, and hasn't seen yet himself, starts life with a debt which is now about $1,900. It is not easy to calculate accurately. I sat in the Senate gallery and listened to our own Senator Knowland introduce and put through his amendment to apply a minimum of $2,600,000,000 (approximately one per cent on the national debt, from the budget savings of next fiscal year). I fully agreed with him. I had to smile a little to hear one Democratic spokesman claim reductions in the national debt already made by his party. Had the war continued, we would have spent additional sums of money, and had they been spent, the debt would have risen to include them, but since the war ended, and the money was taken back from the agencies by whom it would have been spent, thus making available money for retirement of the bonds sold to provide it, then, if you follow me, the Democratic leader called that a "reduction" of the debt. I am trying to say that it will take more than that in effort and sacrifice on the part of Americans to save this country. We paid some of the costs of World War II from our current income. If the costs of the war were divided among the people, each man, woman and child would have owed $3,000, again in round numbers. That's over $10,000 a family. The dangerous thing is not essentially that figure, although that is dangerous enough. The cost of World War II was about eighty per cent of the costs of all wars. The total of over 414 billions was more than the total wealth accumulated in this country since the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Why these figures? Because average. The people of the United States and the Congress of the United States, will have to realize that the dangers of the present world situation are as great as any time in World War II; that their solutions require the same effort work, courage and determination to win. We must realize what lies back of the demands being made of us by a troubled world, and if we accept the responsibilities, we must accept them with open eyes, and the understanding that we cannot back out later. If we go in, we must stay in. We would be like a timber shoring up a falling building; remove it after once placed there, and the building would collapse. It is a matter of unbelievably serious decision. Finally, we must realize, at home that the preservation of the financial integrity of the United States has a direct relation to the preservation of world order, and particularly to the preservation of the freedoms of the peoples of the world. Boiling this down into simple language, to apply to the present condition in Congress, you can call it "first things first," in the language of the late President, or you can call it a problem of "relative urgencies," in budgets or in world decisions, in the language of your own Congressman. Rotarians Hear Winning Oration Anaheim Rotarians at their weekly luncheon Monday heard Miss Wanda Burdick, Anaheim high school student, deliver her prize winning oration, "The Constitution, Guardian of the People's Rights" and also a talk on golfing by George Lake, professional at Long Beach city park course. Miss Burdick, winner of the county final in the American Legion National Oratorical contest, so impressed the Rotarians that they voted her a cash gift to help defray her expenses to the state contest to be held soon. It was announced that Monday there would be a "ladies' night" dinner and program in lieu of the regular luncheon Monday. The affair will be held at the Elks club. The U. S. S.
