Come on down... and see where your voice goes as it flashes across the city in a telephone call. For in most places now a major part of the voice arteries you use are underground... in a huge network of cables some of which are nearly three inches across and may carry up to 4242 individual wires.

CHRISTIAN SCIENCE
"Set your affection on things not on things on the earth," statement from Colossians will Golden Text of the Sunday Literal on "Matter" in all branches of The Mother Church, The Church of Christ, Scientist, Indianton.
According to Luke's Gospel, "went into a city called Nain many of his disciples went with and much people. Now when he nigh to the gate of the city, there was a dead man carried the only son of his mother, and a widow; and much people of city was with her. And when Lord saw her, he had compassion her, and said unto her, Weep And he came and touched them And he said, Young man, I say thee, Arise. And he that was sat up, and began to speak. A delivered him to his mother."
Mary Baker Eddy writes incience and Health with Key Scriptures: "The physical health of Christian Science results not in Jesus' time, from the open of divine Principle, before while and disease lose their reality for man consciousness and disappears naturally and as necessarily asness gives place to light and reformation."
Manholes are normally located at street intersections and they're used to install cable and to facilitate repairs when something goes wrong. The exact location of a break or defect can be spotted quickly with a device known as a Wheatstone Bridge. The "Men Working" signs you see usually mean that cable is being spliced by skilled workmen.
They're busy places, these manholes. During 1946 alone on the Pacific Coast we installed hundreds of miles of underground cable—more than 560,000 miles of individual wires—as just part of keeping pace with the West's tremendous growth. Yes, we are going ahead as rapidly as we can in bringing service to everyone who wants it—and a finer service than ever before.
An ever-improving telephone service at the least cost consistent with good wages and working conditions for our employees and a reasonable return to the thousands of people who have invested in the business.

THREE little girls suffering from undernourishment in an Italian hospital where they will be nursed back to health with the vital supplies provided by American Relief for Italy. There are millions of children in Italy who have insufficient food and malnutrition is epidemic. The children shown are fortunate although all three are stunted in growth so that the garments they are wearing would fit American children two or three years older.
Although American Relief for Italy has already sent more than 50,000,000 pounds of relief materials to over 10,000,000 people, half of whom were children, the food scarcity is increasing and there are literally millions who have less than enough to sustain life.
Food stocks and fuel are exhausted in Italy and the people must receive help from outside their country if they are to be able to win their fight for independence. Millions are unemployed and unable to earn the money which would be spent for vital life necessities if these existed.
To meet this crisis American Relief for Italy is making a national appeal to all Americans who are being asked to make contributions for the immediate benefit of thousands of children such as those pictured here.
