WASHINGTON NEWS LETTER
that kind of job) together with their wives, clerks, stenographers and other helpers, over to Germany, on a job scheduled to last three years: to do what? To write the history of the Nuremburg trials! Now folks, do you really think that needs 100 people plus, or three years? If some of the other demands on the United States are so urgent, maybe we could get along without most of that appropriation. For me, the less said about those trials the better. I may be pleased at the moment to read that the boys who stirred up the trouble got themselves hung, but this is a nation that has tough for government by established laws, and we rather went off the deep end on those trials, and they may come back to haunt our children.
Speaking of urgent matters, here's one: Last year, not this, the budget request for feeding the starving peoples of the occupied areas was 500 millions. The house cut it to 350 millions. There was a yowl you must have heard in California. We were inviting revolution; we got telegrams, and letters. So the Senate, which we in the House sometimes think is called the "Upper House" because it "Ups" all our appropriations, wanted to put it back to 500 millions. The conference compromised at 425 millions. Then the boys in Europe changed the rules on us, and made it read "feeding displaced persons" or something like that, and so could charge against the United States most of the costs of feeding the people in the British and Russian areas. Even then how much do you think of the 425 millions was actually spent? Just 107 millions. Now that agency is asking for 300 millions deficiency, which ought to give you a smile, and the War Department wants 725 millions for military government and feeding people. I'm for feeding people, but you won't object at home, will you, if I also want to scrutinize these budgets? I'll tell you more about these "emergencies" next
Search On For Canine Fugitives
Attention Anaheimers! An urgent request has been issued by the local police department for information leading to the whereabouts of a pair of pooches, small long-haired, nearly white man and female, one of which is wanted for the biting of a youngster on February 28. The possible seriousness of the bite inflicted lieu of the recent rabies epidemic in this area was stressed by Dr. Edward Russell of Santa Ana county health department head.
The little victim is two-and-a-half-year old Carol Chamberlin daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Donald J. Chamberlin of 224 North West street. She was attacked by the dog in front of the Safeway store where her father is employed.
Anyone withholding information concerning the canine duo who at present is harboring them is violating Section 4 of the state and city Dog Ordinance No. 6779 a misdemeanor drawing a $30 fine or up to three months in jail or both. To avoid possible civil suit, and to insure the safety of the bitten child, Robert Spencer, Anaheim pound master, urged the owner or persons, if any harboring the dogs to call the police station Anaheim 2131. An effort to locate the pair for quarantine, in accordance with the state law, have been futile to date.
