Annual Citrus Report Made
Continued from Page 1 products particularly canned juices, will experience greater competition as stocks of other canned goods, which have been in short supply, return to normal.
Undoubtedly the future of the citrus canning program will affect the future of the fresh fruit business. If the market on the canned fruit remains good, it will serve as a support for the fresh fruit market. If the canned fruit price drops, it will depress the fresh fruit market. While canned citrus juices compete with fresh fruit on the consuming market, they have several plus values that must be taken into account. They offer an outlet for fruit which cannot be shipped fresh and they offer an opportunity to sell citrus in certain markets, export for example, where fresh fruit moves under handicap. Convenience is a principal factor in modern living and for this reason canned juices encourage increased consumption of citrus fruits in this form in many homes and public eating places.
Orange returns were quite good throughout the entire year with the exception of small sizes at certain times. The heavy volume of small fruit presented a serious marketing problem throughout the season. The grapefruit market was disappointing to California-Arizona shippers most of the time.
The winter lemon market was good but the summer season, which is usually the time of maximum consumption and price, was not. During that period a combination of cool weather and a scarcity of sugar resulted in light sales volume and lower returns and a higher percent of fruit was diverted to products than usual.
Prices expressed in dollars when compared with prices of former years are not what they seem, because the cost of every operation from the grove to the consumer has increased so much.
California has long enjoyed a splendid reputation for the quality of its fruit and the excellence of its pack. Under wartime stress performance generally was not what it used to be. With a return now to normal competitive selling is essential that the industry street, and her mother, Mrs. Emily Lemon of Fullerton, spent Christmas day visiting relatives in Los Angeles. They enjoyed a reunion with Carmen's brother Albert Lemon, and family, and had a delectable yule dinner with Mrs. Panchita Barron.

improve its handling operations forthwith.
The war economy has amply demonstrated that the basic desire for citrus fruit is very great. Otherwise the huge crops of recent years could not have been marketed. It requires both design and means to satisfy it maintain demand. Production has already reached a total of 1800,000 boxes, equivalent to about 400 lbs., per family per year and is still increasing.
This volume requires wide spread buying power to consume it, so the citrus industry has special interest in the hope share by everyone that a good standard of living may be enjoyed by all the people.

George M. Diehm Taken by Death Fri.
George M. Diehms passed away at the family home at 330 South Illinois street, last Friday evening after a brief illness. Born in Germany 78 years ago, he came to America when a young man and had been a resident of Anaheim for the past 30 years.
The deceased was a member of Bethel Baptist church in this city. Surviving are his widow, Nettie M. Diehm; one nephew, William Diehm, of Long Beach and two nieces in Iowa.
Funeral services were conducted from the chapel of Hilgenfeld mortuary on Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock with the Rev. P. G. Neumann, pastor of Bethel Baptist church, officiating. En-tombment was in Melrose Abbey mausoleum.
Yes,'46 has been a "tough" year
Not only has it been "tough" on train and motor coach patrons throughout our far-flung transportation system but we, too, have had plenty of "headaches." We don't like it either—that many have been inconvenienced by the necessary crowding on cars and buses, particularly during rush hours.
But in spite of it all, you have been very cooperative and understanding. We want you to know that we deeply appreciate it all, and are doing everything possible to remedy the situation.
Anticipating this very situation, additional motor coaches were ordered mahy, many months ago. Manufacturers expected deliveries to start in Fall of 1945, then in February 1946, later postponed to June 1946, later to September 1946; it was not until the latter part of December 1946, that the first new coaches, but only a few, actually were received.
But—'47 does look brighter
Additional new coaches are expected to arrive in larger numbers during the next few weeks and as soon as possible they will be placed in service. Although difficulty is still experienced in securing necessary repair parts to keep all equipment operating, every car and coach in mechanical condition is in service every day.
In addition, we are expending a half million dollars in modernizing 71 rail coaches for your greater comfort and convenience.
We want to "Thank You" again—and suggest that you continue to "Ride More Between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. and after 6 p.m." whenever possible.
New Year's
Greetings
TO EACH AND EVERY ONE.
