Farm Advisor's Office Receives New Assistant
Richard E. Puffer, graduate of the University of California at Davis, in plant science, has been appointed assistant farm advisor in the Orange County Farm Advisor's office. The appointment was made by Professor B. H. Crocheron, director of the California Agricultural Extension service.

Bond Purchases On the Increase
Orange county citizens invested
$531,815 in U. S. Savings bonds
last month, and of this amount
$309,815 represented Series E
Bond purchases.
U. S. Savings Bond sales in the
entire southern California area in
November aggregated $19,816,220;
which brought the grand total
since January 1 to $260,442,993.
In releasing these figures, Fred
H. Johnson, director of bond sales
for the eleven southern counties;
pointed out that the average sales
for each working day in November
showed an increase of $42,127
over the previous month. This,
he believed, was due in great part
to the treasury's promotional and
publicity campaign, during which
newspapers, the radio, banks and
many business and industrial firms have joined in urging increased bond purchases by the people.

SOUTHERN COUNTIES GAS COMPAN
WASHINGTON
As Seen By
CONGRESSMAN JOHN PHILLIPS
When I said, in a column several weeks ago, that I wanted to continue the discussion of certain features of the recent campaign, that were new to this district, I had in mind making a comparison between the campaigns carried on in several districts, not only California, but in other states: There was a marked similarity, even in Kansas and Pennsylvania. The same policy applied in each one, and often the same arguments. We noted them in 1944; in the primary of 1946, and in several districts in the recent general campaign. We got to know them, and so refer to it as the CIO-communist-line type of campaign.
In such a campaign, the first thing is to pick out some group which is large and sensitive. No body seriously thought, for example that the several candidates charged with voting against the veterans; had actually done that. It was only that the veterans constituted a large and fairly sensitive, group for such propaganda. In 1944 it was the "soldier vote". The soldiers decided that one, by demanding the ballot Congress provided for them, just as the veterans know now they were "had", by the so-called "housing bill". An amusing incident was the charge that one California congressman had "voted against the veterans", although he hadn't been in Washington the last two years. He was defeated in 1944 and ran again, successfully, this year.
These charges, like the ones about absentee voting, pick out a statement, usually deliberately old, and has a business at the above address. His wife works for 20th Century Fox, and used to be with Fox West Coast. Deering himself used to work at the Westlake theater and once was with Universal Pictures in some capacity.
None of this is important. It is amusing however to hear the boys deny any knowledge of him. The National Democratic committee repudiates him. All the Hollywood Democrats, including James Roosevelt (by the way, where has he been since November 5th); has taken a vow of silence or something?) insist Deering had no connection with them. They were very emphatic about it. The words "unreliable", and "political peddlar" were used. It looks to me as if our little friend put himself over on the Democratic committee of Orange county.
We can forget about him. He has gone back to the political slums of Hollywood, from which he came. There were two curious things about the campaign he carried on. The first was the reputable business men, and even men holding non-partisan office (in one county at least), would let a phony like this put his ideas over on them.
The second was that my opponent, to whom the whole policy of the campaign must have been repugnant, would permit it to be carried on that way. Ordinary selling principles established long ago that the best way to lose business was to knock a competitor. Politics is no different. Yet the Orange county papers say that
Shortage of Steel Delays Production Of License Plates
Although motor vehicle owners of Anaheim will be able to pay their fees and renew their registrations beginning January 2, as in former years, license plates will not be issued to them until a later date.
Reason for this is the current steel shortage, according to the Sacramento office of the Department of Motor Vehicles, which has delayed production of the plates so much that it will be several weeks before passenger car plates can be mailed out. When they do arrive, however, there will be a pail of them for each car.
Meanwhile, as in former years, the registration of passenger automobiles will proceed, with the registrants paying their fees at the local office and receiving serial numbered receipts showing the license number that eventually will be assigned to them. Penalty dates will be as in former years with the deadline at midnight of February 4.
As in the past, it will be possible to apply for license renewal by mail, although department authorities regard applications submitted in person at one of the numerous branch offices as the more satisfactory method. It was stated by Edgar E. Lampton, director, that this is particularly true of persons contemplating the transfer of their vehicles within the next two or three months because emergency legislation is contemplated that will avoid long delays by permitting the transfer of vehicles through use of the certificate of ownership and the serially numbered receipt issued
provided for them, just as the veterans know now they were "had" by the so-called "housing bill".
An amusing incident was the charge that one California congressman had "voted against the veterans", although he hadn't been in Washington the last two years. He was defeated in 1944 and ran again, successfully, this year.
These charges, like the ones about absentee voting, pick out a statement, usually deliberately untruthful, often far from ascertainable facts, and repeat it over and over. This last is important. It follows the Lenin-Hitler policy of taking a small lie, not a big one that can easily be seen to be false, but a small one, and repeating it over and over, until peepole began to believe it. It must didn't work that way in the 22nd district.
In checking the campaign, I casually checked on the man who appeared in this district to become my opponent's campaign manager. He arrived in Santa Ana on August 21st and registered at the Santa Ana hotel from 831 Sanborn street, Los Angeles. On our side, we charged him to the National Democratic committee or to the CIO. He is 38 years
men holding non-partisan office (in one county at least) would let a phony like this put his ideas over on them.
The second was that my opponent, to whom the whole policy of the campaign must have been repugnant, would permit it to be carried on that way. Ordinary selling principles established long ago that the best way to lose business was to knock a competitor. Politics is no different. Yet the Orange county papers say that when the last half page advertisement was offered them; which was so libelous that the papers refused it, my opponent said publicly that he hadn't wanted the advertisements used, but that Deering told him he, the candidate, had nothing to do with the campaign:
I rise to remark that I find it difficult to imagine someone saying to me that I had nothing to do with my own campaign. He would have been looking for another job about three minutes later, or I'd have been in the next issue of every paper, repudiating him. I contend we have no use for that sort of thing in Riverside and Orange and Imperial counties, and the result November 5th indicates the people think so too.
mitted in person at one of the numerous branch offices as the more satisfactory method. It was stated by Edgar E. Lampton, director; that this is particularly true of persons contemplating the transfer of their vehicles within the next two or three months because emergency legislation is contemplated that will avoid long delays by permitting the transfer of vehicles through use of the certificate of ownership and the serially numbered receipt issued over the counters of the department and at automobile club offices.
Lampton asked those who wish to use the mail method to wait until after the holidays before forwarding their applications. Personal checks are not acceptable.
