Talented students of Albert Cranston, opera singer and vocal instructor of this city, were featured in a well contrasted program at Melrose Abbey last Sunday afternoon.
An organ prelude by Norman Wilcox of Anaheim opened the concert. Betty Jean Olson, also of this city, lyric soprano, interpreted Schubert's beautiful "Ave Maria" and "One Alone" from Rohmberg's operetta "Desert Song". She was accompanied by Elnora Sanford of Anaheim.
Margaret Hernandez of La Jolla, soprano, sang "Indian Love Call" by Friml, accompanied by Miss Sanford.
"Kamennoi-Ostrow" by Rubinstein, played by Wilcox at the console of the organ, followed.
Jeanette Easton, well known coloratura soprano of Fullerton presented "The Last Rose of Summer" from the opera "Martha" by Von Flotow and Strauss' famed "Blue Danube".
Jesse James, basso from Buena Park, sang "Song of Hebrías Cretan" by Elliott. Miss Sanford accompanied him. "Chanson" by Groten was interpreted by Wilcox.
Elizabeth McDonough of Hollywood, known on the screen as Betty Baker, presented "Musset's Waltz Song" from the opera "La Boheme" by Puccini. Joan Brill, versatile pianist also of Hollywood, accompanied her. Of special interest was Miss McDonough's interpretation in Russian of "The Rose Enslaves the Nightingale" by Rimski-Korsakov, and her presentation of "The Spirit Flower" by Campbell-Tipton in Italian.
John Kringen, tenor from Santa Ana, accompanied by Dorothy Dutton, also of Santa Ana, sang "If With All Your Heart" from Mendelssohn's "Elijah." "Vesti la giubba" from "Pagliacci" by Leoncavallo and "Now the Day is Over" by Barnby.

...our nation's FIRST obligation is to its disabled veterans!
It's only human to forget. When our enemies were near our very shores we could hardly wait for the next communique from military headquarters. Today the anxieties of those days have faded. The men who manned the weapons which whipped our enemies were blessed for their valor by a grateful nation. Many of those men have returned from those battles disabled, now needing assistance. Today it is only right that we show our heroes the gratitude we had for them when the battles were being fought and won and they were being disabled for our protection. Our feeling of obligation to them must be as enduring as history itself.
In these specific ways, recommended by the Disabled American Veterans, spokesman for 4 million disabled veterans, our nation can prove its gratitude
The DAV asks your support of the following program:
1. Provide through the Congress adequate compensation and pension to meet everyday living costs for the disabled veteran and his family.
2. Build additional veterans hospitals so that war disabled veterans can be given the best possible treatment and medical care.
3. Make possible selective placement of disabled veterans in jobs they can perform.
4. Extend vocational training and educational opportunities to as many disabled veterans as possible.
5. Treat the disabled war veteran as an individual who wants to be a useful citizen in his community. He does not want charity—but he is entitled to assistance.
