Local Farm Lad Wins State Award
Star State Farmer awards were given to six California farm youths, one of them an Anaheim lad, at the 18th annual convention of Future Farmers of America last Friday.
Each one of the six farm lad shows that they'd earned an average of $3,970 during high school through his Future Farmer agricultural projects and that each has an average net worth in land livestock, equipment and other farming assets of $6,650.
Willoughby Houk, from Doy Palos high school in Merced county is California's Star State Farmer. He was the central regional winner. Other regional award went to Philip Morisoli, St. Helena, north coast; Claudio Bettigia Santa Maria, south coast; Don Chambers, Chico, Sacramento valley; Dino Petrucci, Madera, San Joaquin valley and Milno Stearns Anaheim, southern.
Stearns, of Anaheim, is developing registered Jerseys and poultry. He was president of his FFF chapter and treasurer of the chapter and region. Last year he was high man in the quiz contest sponsored by five leading agriculture cooperatives and participated in the 1000 Future Farmers.

Greyhound Racing Gets Support of Organized Labor
Charles Hardy, international vice-president of the AFL Building Service Employees union, stated that members of organized labor are supporting California veteran organizations in their fight for a “yes” vote on Proposition 2 in the November general election.
“Passage of this proposition will give the veterans of this state a real break by assuring them adequate funds for state-sponsored rehabilitation services in the years to come,” asserted Hardy. “It won’t cost the taxpayers a dime,” he added, “because if this proposition passes, at least $2,000,000 a year will be made available for veterans’ welfare purposes. Vote 'YES' on 3!"
Proposition 3 will relieve the teacher famine in California by guaranteeing public school teachers a minimum salary of $2400 a year. Local taxes will not be increased by this measure. State funds are available for this purpose.
Two hundred California organizations, including the following, urge you to vote "YES" on 3—Republican and Democratic Parties, American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Disabled American Veterans, AFL, CIO, Native Daughters and Native Sons, and P-TA.
And remember—when you vote "Yes" on 3, be sure to vote "No" on 13, which would further reduce present inadequate school appropriations.
