USES Advisor Reviews Rules For Jobless Pay
Richard O. Dexter, veterans' employment representative of the Fullerton office of the United States Employment service, reminded veterans today that in order to be eligible for Service-men's Readjustment Allowance, the applicant must be totally unemployed or part time employed, earning less than $23 a week. He must also be registered for work with the USES and must be able to work, stating his availability at all times for suitable work.
In other words, veterans assigned to an educational training course, which includes students attending Fullerton Junior college and drawing subsistence payments, definitely are not eligible for readjustment allowance.
Any veteran who knowingly accepts a government allowance to which he is not entitled is ineligible to receive any further payment. Furthermore, according to Dexter, any person who makes or causes to be made, a false statement or representation for the purpose of causing an allowance to be paid where none is authorized, is guilty of a misdemeanor and is subject to a fine of not more than $1,000 and not more than one year in prison or both.

State College Teacher Output Drops to New Low
California's state colleges graduated 300 per cent more teacher candidates ten years ago than they do today, according to C. J. "Nell" Haggerty, executive-secretary of the California State Federation of Labor and a member of the state board of education.
Asking for a "yes" vote on Proposition No. 3 in the November general election, Haggerty backed his request to the people by giving statistics showing that California's production of new teachers has dropped alarmingly.
"In 1935," he declared, "1187 graduates of our state colleges studied for teaching careers and received their credentials. In 1945, the statewide total had dropped to 392."
"California's desperate situation is indicated by these figures, especially when we consider them in the light of an admitted need for 40,000 new teachers in the state during the next few years."
The AFL chief stated that Proposition No. 3 can overcome the teacher shortage by increasing minimum salaries for public school teachers to $2400 a year, thereby making teaching a more attractive profession.
"The present minimum salary, a mere $150 a month, would be increased without adding to local taxes. State funds, already adequate and earmarked for educational purposes, would finance the measure," he said.
Pointing out that state colleges are normally the main source of new teacher material, Haggerty added that requiring it

The Rev. Thomas L. Burden, former pastor of White Temple Methodist church in this city, conducted funeral rites from the chapel of Backs, Campbell and Kaulbars mortuary Monday afternoon at one o'clock. Interment was in Westminster Memorial park.

Night School at SAJC Still Open
Registration for full-time students in day school at Santa Ana Junior college is now closed, but the night school, with a total of 40 courses offered, will continue to accept enrollees until further notice, it was announced by the jaysee office.
Total enrollment has reached 1,920 students at the jaysee, Director John H. McCoy, revealed. Of these, 884 are in the day school and 442 have registered thus far for the evening session.
Veterans at Santa Ana, as elsewhere in the nation's colleges, constitute a large percentage of the student body. An estimated two-thirds are former servicemen. Because of the influx of vets, the average age of the male student population now hovers at about 23 years, while the girls remain at their pre-war average of 18.
Although hampered by crowded facilities, Santa Ana, in contrast to many schools in California, was not forced to refuse admission to any qualified prospective students. Until the completion of the new Seventeenth street campus, however, Santa Ana will still remain among the smaller junior colleges in the southland.

Rose Parade to Be Greatest Ever Seen in Pasadena
Plans are now being made for what promises to be one of the longest and most beautiful parades ever witnessed in Pasadena on New Year's day by the Tournament of Roses association.
"Never before in the entire history of the tournament has so much interest for participation in the parade been shown at such an early date," declared Harry W. Hurry, parade committee chairman. "If entries continue coming in at the present pace, the parade list will have to be closed at an early date," he added.
The tournament's theme selection for the coming parade, "Holidays in Flowers," offers a wide variety of selection for the participants as holidays of foreign countries may be used as well as those of the United States. This will certainly lend to the beauty and originality of the floats, assuring the thousands of visitors one of the finest parades in the tournament's history.
Included in the forty entries to date is Santa Ana.
