Keep More Fruit
Than All Florida
A agriculture department of Los Angeles Chamber of Commerce reported today that fresh and vegetable shipments in the ten southern counties California last year exceeded any state in the union California itself.
Hundred and sixty-nine and carloads of produce from Louis Obispo, Kern, Santa Ana, Ventura, Los Angeles, Bernardino, Orange, River-San Diego and Imperial was exceeded by a safe maritime 121,500 carloads from second fruit and vegetation shipping state of the nation. California's shipments by rail boat in 1945 totaled 315,513 tons, or 31 per cent of the total movement. One-sixth of fresh fruit and vegetables sold in the United States were in California's ten southcounties.
Southern California's principle shipment was 60,347 carloads of oranges. Potatoes were in 1945 with 24,977 carloads; others were: lemons, 17-carloads; lettuce, 17,729; and 8,056.
County was southern California's top shipping county last according to the chamber. Principal produce was potato which helped push the to-market 31,795 carloads. Imperial second with 28,095 and Los Angeles third with 27,121. Or-county moved 21,849 carload San Bernardino 15,766.
Albacore fishing has taken the spotlight for record catches. Nearly 200 were reported taken in by various boating groups throughout the week, the largest catch having been made by the Port Orange boat, "Southern Comfort II," which landed 65 in one day!
It took a grand tour of the waters, from Newport Harbor to the Huntington Flats, then to Dana Point and on up to the Laguna kelp beds, and back to Newport Harbor, but Skipper Chick Rollins' "Patience" managed to land many sea bass, callco bass, halibut and barracuda.
As far as the heavyweights go, Ernie Hansen, of the commercial swordfish boat "Bette Ann," landed a 470 pound broadbill swordfish by himself. He piloted the boat up to the fish, ran out on the plank and speared the broadbill successfully. The ensuing struggle lasted for two and one-half hours. The fish is now on display in the window of a new Santa Ana store, named "Larry's Fresh and Frozen Sea Foods," 808 East First street.

Huntington Beach To Have $60,000 Sports Stadium
License to build a $60,000 sports stadium within the Huntington Beach city limits was granted to Bob Moore, business manager of the Pacific Coast speedway association, by the city council there last Monday night.
Construction of the stadium, which will be operated by Moore, will begin next Monday on a 30 acre plot which was leased for 10 years from Thomas B. Talbert, former mayor of Huntington Beach. It will be located in the eastern flats, adjacent to the municipality's 44-acre tract, and will be accessible from Atlanta avenue and Highway 39.
The stadium will feature midget auto races, football games, softball, fair pageants and other outdoor events.
Of steel frame construction with wood seats, it will cover eight of the 30 acres. The remaining 22 acres will be used for parking, handling an estimated 4400 autos. Seating capacity will accommodate 7000 persons, with enlargement planned as more materials become available to hold 15,000.
The city of Hunting Beach will receive one per cent of the company's gross receipts which are expected to run between $300 and $4000 per year.
