USES Urges Employers To List Jobs Open
"Try to live on $20 a week and you will see what I mean!" This statement followed an opinion offered by George P. Dykes, chairman of the Los Angeles County Veterans Unemployment Advisory committee, when he said "the average veteran who is drawing unemployment insurance is doing so because he can't get a good job, not because he wants to loaf!"
According to Mrs. Florence H. Pettis, manager of the local USES office in Fullerton, the same conditions prevail in Orange county.
Provided under the G.I. Bill of Rights, the Serviceman's Readjustment Allowance was intended to help bridge the gap between the time a man leaves his separation center and the time he finds the job he is looking for. There are some who take advantage of this, naturally, wanting a paid vacation, but they are only a small minority.
The bulk of the men were discharged when the country was in the throes of demobilization and many factories were shut down by strikes. There just weren't enough of the right kind of jobs to go around, no matter how earnestly these young men may have looked for work.
Dykes also charged that many of the men don't know where to go in order to find the jobs which are available. The veteran is told, when discharged, to contact the USES and they will take care of him in the best ways possible. Yet, employers have filed only between 5 per cent and 18 per cent of their job openings with the USES. Certainly, if a veteran doesn't know a job exists, he obviously can't apply for it!
"You will hire one of the best employees you have ever had when you hire a veteran," continued Dykes. "He doesn't want an enforced vacation on $20 a week! If he likes the job you offer him and he finds that he can do well at it, he will naturally do his level best. If the job is below his level of skill or in a field he doesn't want to enter, he will turn right around and choose the $20 a week again."
"The veterans were able to give plenty of thought as to what they want to do after the war. They deserve a chance to try and get what they want," said Dykes.
A remarkable record was set when, according to figures released by the national headquarters of the USES, it was found that 10 out of every 12 veterans discharged by June, had either found jobs or gone back to school in preparation for jobs.
Mrs. Pettis urged all employers to make their jobs accessible, free of charge, to the veteran looking for work, no other means of securing may use in addition.

"I'll give you $1000 if sign me a part in The Per."
This was the offer retired resident of Emory to Frederick Schwanker rector of this year's Loyola Masters, leading nature of the Laguna Beach val of Arts, which opened day, Wednesday, and include August 18, at Irvine Bowl.
The man's request reenthusiasm akin to that stated by hundreds on in the area as he explains he had seen the living tions of the famed picture the previous 10 years of sentation and since then had been harboring a desire to take part.
"Now I'm a permanent and am willing to pay if you will allow me the tableau," he said.
"No, you can't take for $1000," Schwankovs with a twinkle, "but for nothing."
Competition to pose ing pictures is keen. Supper cast, this year, ceramist, a lumber deli a medical doctor, a ghost writer and several of World War II. The Christ, always kept a seing played by a veteran.

"Poverty Stricken"
Woman Starves; Had Huge Estate
Said to have spent her last days in "conditions of squalor and poverty," Mattie Tipton Clark, 61, of Buena Park, succumbed to malnutrition last spring, leaving an estate asserted to be valued at $111,862 by Income Tax Appraiser James B. Utt, it was learned today.
Bonds and large holdings in real estate she owned were discovered upon investigation, but Coroner Earl Abbey described conditions to be "deplorable" when he conducted his examinations there last spring.
John Appleton Clark, 64, her husband, is now under the court-appointed guardianship of L. M. Renaker, 159 East 73rd street, Los Angeles.
With Attorney Elmer Guy representing the estate, the husband appointed J. B. Sullivan as administrator. A Buena Park bank was found to contain a holographic will, dividing her property among her husband; Dr. James S. Tipton of Friendsville, Tenn., her brother; Kate Foster of Hillsville, Va., a sister; Frank Foster of Hillsville, a nephew, and Ethel Chitwood of Wythe, Va., a niece. It was dated April 8, 1935.

"But that isn't enough to meet the ever growing demand," he said, "we'll have to expand to keep our products on the grocers' shelves in sufficient numbers."
The total invested capital and earned surplus of the company will be brought above the $800,-000 mark by the new plant, which is being financed through the sale of $300,000 of preferred stock.
