Colony Quips
Continued from Page 1
We mentioned last week that after fifty years in the newspaper business Sam Meyer of Newport had disposed of his holdings and was really quitting the business. In his column "The Sand Crab" he has the following to say, we thought he couldn't keep still:
"Shelve me? Here and there sundry guys intimate that The Crabber is going to be nicely laid out on a musty shelf. Uuh! It may interest most of you well-wishers that despite the fact that I have abandoned the helm of the Publishing Ship of State, after certain pecuniary confabs, will still keep on grinding out this wayward column. 'Tis true one of my chief items of interest is considerable exercise in and around a house on Lido and one in the Mesa, where the garden of the latter is producing a bumper crop of tomatoes, while I have just finished curing several sacks of onions now as dry as a bar without a liquor license. And that ain't funny, either."
The story of wealthy, socialite Alexander William Biddle's going on the unemployment relief payroll at $20 a week indicates that American humor—a devastating weapon in form of satire—isn't thinned out in the bluest of Philadelphia "main liner" blood. He talked to reporters on the matter in his luxurious 10-room home, and his wife pointedly interjected that her chief current worry is finding a new maid to hire.
Thus it appears a tongue-in-cheek commentary on the ridiculousness of legislation that obliges taxpayers to pay a millionaire to loaf. Mr. Biddle is a radio announcer out of a job. He can draw $20 a week until he finds (or chooses to find) a job he likes in the field he likes. He's got his loophole—just as thousands of workers wanting vacations at public expense are finding loopholes whereby they "put the bite" on the taxpayers.
If Mr. Biddle's dole, as it appears he intends, does jar public opinion into insisting that the loopholes be plugged—that unemployment compensation provide the deserved and needful relief it was intended to provide nothing more—it will money well spent!
In a recent address Eisenhower said: "Vast social, economic and political erations have gone into development. We cannot bridge them by wishful or to abolish them in anyferences."
Alexander Graham Bembered as the inventor telephone. In his ear he was a professor of virology at Boston University where he introduced his system of teaching the speak. Although his brought him fame and never gave up his interests education of the deaf, uphe wrote much.

'47 Studebakers To Be At Leavitt Ford Saturday
Models of the 1947 Studebaker Commander will be on display at Leavitt Ford Garage, 226 South Los Angeles street, this Saturday as the featured attraction marking the culmination of a remodeling program which began at the end of last February.
Streamlined new frontage of the building includes huge plate glass display windows and smart new sign. Floor space of the 24-hour garage has been increased to 15,-000 square feet.
Complete new tune up equipment is currently being used. A competent force of 15 experts is on hand to assist customers. The complete automotive service includes motor re-building, washing, polishing, painting, "straightening" service, wreck re-building, overhauling, starter and generator testing.
New Jeep Station Wagon
Willys-Overland Motors "surprise of the year" is the new Jeep Station Wagon which is now in mass production. The vehicle is powered by an improved 63 HP jeep engine, has a 104 inch wheelbase, seats 7 adults, and has an all-steel body. Designed to fill the need for an all-around car which rides with passenger car comfort and can, with seats removed, be used as a light transport, the vehicle is meant for people who never seriously considered a station wagon before. With generous carrying space, it is a utility car for farm or business use. The aspen-grained masonite interior makes cleaning easy after utility use while the steel body eliminates varnish upkeep costs, essential with the traditional wooden station wagon.

When this happens to you . . . here's what to do claim for unemployment insurance at once, when a layoff avoid delay in receiving benefits. If you have worked on the job covered by the unemployment compensation state, and if you are able and willing to work, but can suitable job, you may receive weekly checks to help your gap from one job to another. For full details on how much receive, and for how long you may receive it, see the uncompensation claims clerk in the government employment office nearest your home. (No. 1 in a series of 9.)
The department is not financially equipped to halt the nuisance in the absence of an abatement district.
"It is an almost certain future development," said Dr. Russell, "and will be brought about by popular demand when the mosquitoid nuisance becomes unbearable to residents. The steadily increasing population of the county would reduce the individual cost of such an operation."
The chief point of the nuisance is in the vicinity of Newport Harbor, although complaints concerning mosquitos have come from all over the county.
Local Lineman Retires Here After 33 Years
After 33 years of service, Earl P. Guysi of this city became a retired employee of the Southern California Telephone Company last Wednesday.
A widower, Guysi resides at 311 East Wilhelmina street. He will now have to become accustomed to not arising at 3 o'clock each week-day morning to go to work as a telephone repair and installation man as he has done for the past 20 years.
More than 100 telephone employees bid him "good luck" during a "whale of a party" given in his honor recently. It was "emceed" by Roy Coleman of this...
Health Officer Urges Control Of Mosquitos
The recommendation to organize a mosquito abatement district in Orange county was made today by Dr. Edward Lee Russell, county health officer, as he reported that numerous complaints concerning a mosquito nuisance had been made to his department.
The doctor said that the current wave of mosquitos are more bothersome than dangerous. No discovery had been made in the county of malaria or other disease bearing mosquitos.
An abatement program would have been instigated immediately had disease spreading insects been discovered, but the health department is now unable to combat the nuisance because of its limited authority to check the mosquito.
Six Scholarships Awarded Students By C.C.P.-T.A.
Final awards of six additional Teacher Education Scholarships for the 1946-47 were made by the California Congress of Parents and Teachers in July, following the regular bi-monthly meeting of the board of managers in Los Angeles recently.
Highlight of the meeting was decision to make an increase of $5,000 to the fund of $30,000 already available.
Selection of the six new recipients was made from a list of applicants received earlier in the spring. No further awards will be made until next fall, it was revealed.

Killed In Auto Crash Last Night
Robert Hockaday, president of Hockaday and Phillips, incorporated with Earl Phillips, was killed in a fatal automobile accident yesterday evening on the highway between Lone Pine and Bishop.
Seriously injured was his wife. His two children, Bob, Jr., and Sally, were also injured. They were all taken by ambulance to the Mt. Whitney hospital in Lone Pine.
The tragic accident occurred as Hockaday was on his way to his Santa Ana home, 2025 North Broadway, after a four-day vacation at Lone Pine.
A head-on collision with a truck driven by C. K. Johnson, 77, of 4135 Pomona boulevard, Walnut, California, caused the crash.
Hockaday originated the auto parts company 25 years ago. Later Harry Harlow became his partner: Then the concern which now has branches in Orange, Anaheim, Santa Ana and Fullerton, became known as Hockaday-Harlow and Phillips. In 1933 Hockaday and Phillips bought out Harlow's share.
No Anaheim resident can afford to be without The Gazette at the small cost of only $2.00 a year.
