New Orleans Hot,
Says Local Man
"If you think it's hot here, you should see New Orleans," said Art Narath of 271 E. Center, on his return from a two weeks vacation.
Narath, who was accompanied by two friends, Walter Coleman of Santa Ana, and Albert Jenkins of Riverside, journeyed via the Southern Pacific on the new Golden State limited to attend the Motion Picture Operators and Stage Hands convention which took place from July 21-27 in Chicago.
They went on from there to New Orleans, where their comment on the weather originated.

GRAIN RESTRICTIONS FOR BEER MAKING CONTINUED
Restrictions on the use of grains for alcoholic beverages will be continued as long as the shortage of grains for domestic and foreign food needs lasts, according to a statement of the USDA.
While the amount of grains used for beer manufacture was cut 30 per cent in accordance with the government's grain conservation program, the actual production of beer dropped, only 20 per cent during March, April and May, government reports show.
This year's production of beer has been running at an annual rate of about 70,000,000 barrels, as contrasted with prewar production of about 55,000,000 barrels in 1940-41 and 86,500,000 in 1945.
Confucius Say:
'He Who Argues With Horse ...'
Who comes out the winner when a man argues with a horse?
The answer to this pertinent (or impertinent) question was given to a Garden Grove, Norris-Hesla, 32, of 610 E. Stanford Ave., while driving his car in North Hollywood last Monday.
A runaway horse, said to be from the Pickwick stables, charged head first into the car, inflicting a deep gash over Hesla's right eye.
The horse was unhurt and probably wondered what a car was doing coming down his side of the highway in the first place.

AAA AND THE FARMER
1947 CONSERVATION PROGRAM ANNOUNCED
"California, in common with other states, speeded up food production to meet the war-time need. To do this, farmers drew heavily upon reserves of soil fertility built up over long years of good farming practices.
"Now, in order to conserve our land and insure a continuing productivity, we must pay back what we took from the soil."
With this statement, Stephen Griset, chairman of the Orange county AAA committee, pointed out that the shift from practices designed for quick production to those of greater long-term building value will play an important part in the 1947 ACP program. He added that increased responsibility, locally, in the new program will help farmers make such shifts.
For the first time, Griset stated, the program allows each county to develop and carry out a practice other than those included in the approval list for the states. The other practices may be selected from a long and flexible list. This list was worked out in California by farmer committees and technical experts.
Authority for the program is given by congress to assist in carrying out soil-building practices, soil and water conservation, or the harvest of grass and legume seed.
"The program," said Griset, "works on a farmer-government partnership basis, with both parties working to stop soil losses and to save our priceless water."

"The program," said Griset, "works on a farmer-government partnership basis, with both parties working to stop soil losses and to save our priceless water supply."
Farmers also receive assistance from the ACP in conservation materials and services, he explained. Most materials, he added, are procured by the farmers from local dealers.
In general, the 1947 program is divided into these major types of practices: (1) soil amendments; (2) planting of cover crops; (3) harvesting of certain legumes and grass seeds; (4) erosion control and water conservation; (5) range and pasture improvement; (6) forestry; and (7) other practices such as weed control and clearance of land for plowing and pasture.
Special emphasis in 1947 will be placed on measures to prevent soil erosion and to conserve water, said Griset. Such measures include planting of row crops on the contour, building of terraces, erosion-control dams; livestock water ponds and similar practices.
Many farmers, Griset believes, will find it more profitable to improve the land they already own by applying soil conservation and similar practices than to buy additional acres.
With land prices at high levels in most localities, money spent for improving or stabilizing farm income frequently will bring better returns than the purchase of additional land, he points out.
LIVESTOCK MEN SEE HOPE IN FEED-GRAIN OUTLOOK
With the release of the July crop report, livestock men can look forward to a more nearly adequate supply of feed grains during the year, according to Stephen Griset, chairman of the Orange county AAA committee.
If weather continues good, the report shows, farm production this year may exceed the record high of 1942.
Livestock men are particularly jubilant over the fact that all

Possessing a photographic copy of the above picture of Mother Cabrini, who was cannonized on July 7 by Pope Plus XII in Saint Peter's Vatican City, Rome, is one of the prized possessions of Louis Gagliardi, well known art collector who has displayed a number of his pictures in this city on various occasions.
Twenty-one years after the death of Mother Cabrini, Pope Plus XI declared her Beath or "Blessed" on November 13, 1938. Completing the necessary waiting period for cannonization, she was formally canonized as Saint Frances Xavier Cabrini last month.
The original painting by Fausto Tasca, which, with thirteen other religious canvases by this artist, had been lost for a number of years, were "discovered" in the over the nation the corn crops look fine, and barring bad weather and unforeseen set-backs, may yield the largest corn crop in U.S. history. The oat crop also looks like a record crop. With many wheat fields already harvested, an extra large wheat crop is almost a certainty.
“This will mean smaller demands on corn and other feed grains for direct human food,” said Griset. “Even though barley and rye production is down, the crop report adds up to good prospects.”
While crops are larger, total feed grain supplies will be a little smaller this fall than last, owing to the low feed grain carry-over—most reserve stocks have been used during the last year.
Offsetting the low carry-over are reduced livestock numbers, which will mean a better balance between the feed grain supplies and number of livestock and poultry to be fed.
Protein meal presents a less favorable picture, as crop prospects in oil-bearing crops show a decrease from the past year, indicating tighter protein meal supplies. Flaxseed production is expected to be little more than half as large as last year, with peanut and soybean acreage down.
Funds will be used to assist in the establishment, operation and expansion of nonprofit school lunch programs administered through a state-designated sponsoring agency.
Under the provision of the Act, nonprofit school lunch programs in both public and nonprofit private schools are eligible for Federal assistance.
Under the permanent school lunch program as authorized by congress, 75 million Federal funds are made available to states on a fund-matching basis. Sums paid in by the children for their meals are counted as part of the state's matching requirement.
Schools participating in the program, it is stipulated, must agree that lunches will be made available to all children in the school without discrimination and regardless of ability to pay.

There will be no wheat marketing quotas and no acreage allotments during the 1947-48 wheat production and marketing season, it has been officially announced.
The AAA act of 1938, Griset explained, provides for marketing quotas when the total wheat supply exceeds a normal year's do-

The State Department of Education has been designated by Governor Warren as the agency to handle the state-wide school lunch program.
