Punch Boards Reported In Circulation A page 1 story in the Santa Ana Register last Wednesday reported discovery of punch boards in stores and cafes in that city, sponsored by the local post of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. Appearance of the boards occurred nearly two years to the day when they disappeared following a raid of the Rev. Wesley Edwards on several cafes in unincorporated areas of the county in which a number of slot machines were seized. The boards reported to be in circulation now, are of the same type that disappeared from counters at that time, the newspaper stated. In connection with the story of the return of the devices, Fred J. Devenney, senior vice commander and Chester Stillings, publicity chairman of Post 1080, in a statement issued the same day, declared sponsorship of the boards was to raise funds for the erection of a VFW memorial hall to be erected in Orange county. Mrs. Sarah Bravo Death Last Friday Mrs. Sarah Bravo of 409 South Clementine street, passed away last Friday, July 19, at the age of 58 years. She was born in Durango, Mexico, and had lived in Anaheim for 10 years and in Orange county for 30 years. Left to mourn her passing are her husband, Abraham of the home; one son, Charles of Anaheim; sister, Mrs. Ramona Martinez of Anaheim, and one brother John Martinez of Riverside. Recitation of Holy Rosary was held at the home on Sunday evening at 7:30 o'clock with mass at St. Boniface church Monday morning at 9 o'clock with burial in Holy Sepulchre cemetery. Drastic Changes In Vets Insurance If Truman Signs Approximately 350,000 veteran insurance policy holders in southern California will be affected if a new bill passed by Congress and now awaiting President Truman's signature becomes a law. The new measures list drastic changes such as lump sum settlements, endowment features, unrestricted beneficiary designations, disability income, and other general benefits comparable to old line policies and not formerly permitted in National Service Life insurance. L. C. Chapman, manager of the Los Angeles Veterans Administration regional office, reports that complete information will be given veterans through the press on how, when and where to make desired changes in their policies if the President signs the bill thereby making it a law. "It took some time, veterans will remember, new forms and an explanation of procedures to get the amended features of the Servicemen's Readjustment Act in action," said Chapman. "It will take time after this bill becomes a law, he added, to set up its machinery. We will give the veterans the information as quickly as possible." Cyrus G. Baldwin, first president of Pomona College, was not appointed until two years after the college was organized. Come over on the Sunny Brook side! Orange Juice, of course, has been there for years. Now Lemon and Water is right beside it. Practically all leading U.S. railroads—whether or not they ship much citrus fruit—now feature Lemon and Water for breakfast. A result of promotion by the Exchange Advertising Department and of the growing popularity of Lemon as a laxative. Two big Milwaukee jobbers are about to hire service men to build displays and put on promotions for their retail customers. They figured that Sunkist Dealer Service had done so much for their citrus sales, they'd be smart to have men of their own to promote all their produce. Whether it's a sweltering noon in August or a zero day with three feet of snow on the ground—somebody in every Exchange sales office has to go down to the freight yards and inspect the fruit that has arrived on track. You break the seal on the car door with a pocket hammer, open boxes, look carefully at the fruit, taste it, make out a written report for the shipper, take samples back to the office for the manager to examine. You do it in fogs, blizzards and rain. Not much fun, but it has to be done—conscientiously. And it is. A lot of jobbers never look at a car of Exchange fruit themselves any more. If the Exchange District Sales Manager says it's okay, they know it's okay. In most Sunkist offices the inspecting is done by some young lad just breaking into Exchange service. It's a good way to start, apparently. Almost all the 57 District Sales Managers—yes, and the Division Managers, too—started in by inspecting fruit. And practically all the rest started in Dealer Service. NOB HILL COFFEE 23¢ Choice of grind. 2-lb. pkg., 40c. 1-lb. pkg. SAFEWAY In most Sunkist offices the inspecting is done by some young lad just breaking into Exchange service. It's a good way to start, apparently. Almost all the 57 District Sales Managers—yes, and the Division Managers, too—started in by inspecting fruit. And practically all the rest started in Dealer Service. The people that Exchange growers employ to sell their fruit learn the business from the ground up. On this circle tour of the country, your reporter talked with 47 jobbers. Noticed one thing everywhere. Any jobber, when he talks about selling Sunkist fruit, gets a certain glint of pride in his eye and a note of satisfaction in his voice. Sometimes he tries to hide the way he feels. He may be engaged in bawling you out on account of small sizes! But the pride shows through all the same. Jobbers like to sell Sunkist because their customers want it—but that's not the whole story. They respect quality. They know their fruit. And they just naturally take pride in selling the leading brand. Also the Exchange organization has their respect—everywhere. They're proud to be associated with it—because of its long years of leadership, its clear policies, sales service and fair dealing. And they've a high regard for the caliber of Exchange men. Go around the country and see! This standing with the trade is unique. It's one of the great assets of the Exchange—an asset that will be of the utmost benefit to every Exchange grower in the competitive years ahead. Next report: in this paper two weeks from today.
